- His family had a long tradition of practicing voodoo and making humble offerings to the spirits to keep the children well-fed and the elders healthy. Then things took a turn for he worse. Daddy got his hours cut. Mama had to take a job as a cala woman to make sure the rest of the family got to eat and see the doctor regularly. Sometimes she came home with tears in her dress that made no sense. With a purse full of money even though she clearly hadn't managed to sell a single rice fritter. It was a long time coming, but when the wicked spirit offered him so much, for what seemed to be so little, he accepted the offer, and thought of it as nothing but what he already had coming. He didn't realize the extent of the sacrifices the spirit would demand. He didn't know what he would have to do to stay in his new master's good graces. He didn't know how many bodies he'd have to hide. He never meant for things to turn out this way, but now that he's gotten used to it, he really can't complain.
