  1. Created by a dwarf named Magnum Thydus, Smith was "born" into the tinker's guild in the city of Everwall. Magnum, a master tinkerer and smith, had been wanting an apprentice but, due to a lack of candidates, he was forced to work alone. One day, a patron of his offered a payment that piqued his interest. The plans and specifications—a recipe perhaps—for a living construct with a soul of its own. Magnum quickly accepted the plans and began his work, making sure to include some adjustments to suit his new apprentice's needs. And so, Smith was born.
  2. Throughout his apprenticeship, Smith learned very quickly, as a warforged does. He became proficient in both smithing and tinkering in only a few years, to the amazement of his "father". He also learned skills from other guild members that took an interest in him, particularly jeweling and woodcarving. However, his favorite craft by far was tinkering, which was also what he practiced the most. As Everwall was not the most peaceful of cities, Magnum also decided to teach Smith the basics of combat. Being a fan of guns, he made sure Smith was well acquainted with them, although he did not give him one to keep. By the age of 7, Smith was a full-fledged guild member with a few patrons of his own, but he still considered himself an apprentice of Magnum.
  3. One day, a particularly wealthy human nobleman that went by the name of Vaerius Starsword approached Smith and Magnum's storefront. Before I continue, you should know that Vaerius is as bitter and narcissistic as he is influential—not the type of man that one wants to cross. Vaerius had come out to the store because he wanted to challenge the "metal abomination" that worked there to a tinkerer's duel. What a tinkerer's duel entails is a battle of constructs. Each participant has one month to build a miniature construct that is equipped for combat. Then, a duel is held and the construct that succeeds in incapacitating the other is deemed the winner along with its creator. Vaerius specified that if he lost, he would donate a large sum of money to the store and, if he won, the "ugly piece of iron" would be destroyed. Fearing for the wellbeing of Magnum and their store, Smith accepted the challenge.
  4. One month later, he had finished his masterpiece. It was a miniature dragon powered by a magical core that could even fly and breath flame. On the day of the duel, each contestant presented their construct in a small arena that Vaerius had prepared outside of his home. Vaerius had brought a small, heavily armored warrior wielding a greatsword. It was extremely complex, and Magnum new immediately that Vaerius could not have built it himself. Nonetheless, the spectators began cheering and the duel began. both constructs put up a good fight, but it seemed that the warrior would not be able to overcome the special capabilities of the dragon. Suddenly, as the duel was nearing its end, the dragon gained a nearly imperceptible glow and stopped moving. Once everyone had leaned in, curious as to what was happening, the dragon quickly leapt up and took flight once again. However, excitement turned to terror as the dragon began attacking the crowd of spectators! It managed to cause several injuries before Vaerius himself knocked it out of the sky with a well-placed swing of his sword and accused Smith of attempting to kill him. Smith, unsure of what to do, submitted to the rapidly approaching city guards. As he was escorted away, he noticed a mysterious hooded figure walking away from the crowd.
  5. Smith was quickly sentenced to death by the court, whose judges had been chosen by the Starsword family. He was brought to prison, but his stay would not be long. The night before his planned destruction, he was visited by a surreptitiously dressed halfling, who, while picking the lock on Smith's cell, explained that his name was Korvias Swiftstride and that the guild had sent him. He was to be freed and smuggled out of the city, to where the guild had influence and the Starsword family did not.
  6. Since then, Smith has been a wandering craftsman for his guild. Life on the road was not as easy as it was in the city, but Smith was plenty tough enough to handle it. He did, however, miss Magnum and his friends in the city. Thanks to the efforts of the Tinkerer's guild, he was not labeled a criminal anywhere other than Everwall and he was informed that he should never return. After a few failed robbery attempts against him, Smith realized that he found combat exciting, so he began doing some light questing during his travels. He also realized that he needed better weaponry, so he used most of his savings to craft a powerful gun that his "father" would have been proud of.
