  1. >It's been a year and a half since you brought your fluffy runt, Imp, home
  2. >He's been a constant joy in your life
  3. >Cheeky bastard through and through
  4. >He even learned to ride a dachshund, which you then adopted
  5. >Named him Frankie
  6. >Imp loves to go out on walks with Frankie
  7. >Well, you say walks...
  8. >Truth is Imp rides around on Frankie's back
  9. >Other dogs and owners stare curiously at the duo
  10. >Imp just grins is lop-sided grin and tells Frankie that he's a good doggy
  11. >Your life's pretty damn good
  12. >Until that fateful morning
  13. >Imp had started slowing down over the past few months
  14. >Today it's even worse
  15. >Not even his morning toast can make him move faster
  16. >"Imp no feew good, big man... Imp sweepy..."
  17. >He really doesn't look well
  18. >Frankie is hovering over Imp like a constant defender
  19. "Imp, where does it hurt?"
  20. >"No huwt... Just... Feew wong."
  21. >That's a bad sign
  22. "Imp, I think you need to visit the vet."
  23. >You expect the usual complaints, but Imp surprises you as always
  24. >"Ok big man... Vet make Imp feew betta. Go vet."
  25.
  26. >You place Imp in the passenger seat of the car
  27. >Frankie is refusing to leave Imp's side, so you have to bring him along
  28. >You would usually find it surprising that both of them want to go to the vet
  29. >But today you're just too worried about Imp
  30. >You've called ahead, so the vet is waiting for you as you pull up
  31. >Vet's always been nice to Imp, he's one of the few fluffy ponies that are actually a joy to be around
  32. >The Vet takes Imp into his office and places him on the examining table
  33. >Frankie stays on the floor, sitting by the table
  34. >"Hey there Imp, Anon says you're not feeling to good."
  35. >"Imp no feew good. Imp feew weawy wong. Hewp Imp pwease?"
  36. >"I'll do my best, little guy."
  37. >Vet runs all the usual tests
  38. >Imp doesn't even giggle when he's tickled by the stethoscope
  39. >Vet finishes up, then pulls you aside
  40. >"Anon, this is going to be hard to take..."
  41. >Oh God, please...
  42. >"Imp's dying. Fluffy ponies generally don't live too long, and it's rare for runts like Imp to even live THIS long. He's looking at a few more days, tops."
  43. >You've gone completely numb
  44. >"I know it's hard, but we have to talk options. You can either put him down now, possibly saving him days of discomfort, or you can take him home and let him die there."
  45. >You let these words sink in
  46. >Your best friend is dying
  47. >And you decide how he's going to go
  48. "... No. It's not up to me. It's HIS choice."
  49.
  50. >The vet nods
  51. >He understands that Imp's comprehension levels are better than the average fluffy
  52. >Whether by teaching, or by some genetic mutation, he has a basic grasp of life and death
  53. >You turn back to Imp and kneel down to talk to him on eye level
  54. >"Hewwo big man... Wat vet say?"
  55. "I... It's not good news, buddy..."
  56. >Imp looks concerned
  57. >"Big man sad?"
  58. "Yeah. Big man very sad... Imp, you're really sick. You have big ouchies in here."
  59. >You pat is whole body, and use fluffy dialect to make him understand
  60. "You... You're not going to be around much longer
  61. >Imp's eyes widen in understanding
  62. >"... Imp go big sweep?"
  63. "That's right... Imp go..."
  64. >You start tearing up
  65. >This is harder than you thought
  66. >"Why big man cwy? Be tuff, big man."
  67. >This breaks you out of your melancholy, and you look straight at Imp's serious expression
  68. >"Imp go big sweep. No wike, no want, but hafta go. Big man no be sad. No cwy. Imp no cwy, see?"
  69. >It's true, his eyes are dry
  70. >"Fwuffy mama go wong sweep. Imp go wong sweep, den Imp see fwuffy mama 'gain."
  71. >You smile softly at his bravery
  72. >You then explain his options
  73. >He can go "long sleep" here, or he can stay at home and sleep there
  74. >Imp makes up his mind
  75. >"Imp go home. Wan' stay wif big man an Fwankie."
  76. >Vet comes back over, scratches Imp behind the ears and starts telling you what preparations to make
  77.
  78.
  79. >You pay the vet bill and take Imp and Frankie home
  80. >Imp rides Frankie all the way to the car
  81. >Once home, you move Imp's basket out of the safe room, and into yours
  82. >It'll be better for everyone if he's close to you
  83. >Also bring his food and water in, so he can get to it easily
  84. >Lay Imp in his basket, where he sits up and smiles weakly
  85. >Fank'oo big man. Imp wike bedwoom."
  86. >You start fixing him an afternoon snack of his favourite: spaghetti on toast
  87. >You've cut the toast up into small chunks
  88. >Imp's getting too weak to pull pieces off a larger slice of toast
  89. >You stay with him and talk about everything and anything
  90. >Things you both liked to do
  91. >What all his fluffy friends from the park are named
  92. >His favourite ball
  93. >His favourite girl fluffy to have special hugs with
  94. >YOUR favourite girl to have special hugs with
  95. >You both smile and laugh
  96. >Then you have an idea
  97. >Over the years, you and Imp lied making home movies
  98. >Mainly of him stomping around a block city, the tiny toy war-axe from your old knight toy in his mouth
  99. >You would narrate the tails of The Mighty Giant Knight of the Fluff and his journey through the land of blocks
  100. >You set these videos up and watch them til Imp's bed time
  101. >"Big man...?"
  102. "Yeah, Imp?"
  103. >"Can... Can Imp sweep wif yoo? In bed?"
  104. "That's too dangerous, little guy. I might roll on top of you."
  105. >"Den, can big man sweep next to basket? Imp... Scawed."
  106. >You're taken aback
  107. >That's the first time he's ever said that
  108. "Ok, sure. I'll sleep next to you."
  109.
  110. >You set up pillows and a quilt next to Imp's basket and lay down
  111. >You lie with him, until he falls sound asleep
  112. >You keep watch over him as he sleeps
  113. >You reflect on how much this tiny little fluffy has changed your life
  114. >You were depressed, miserable
  115. >Then this cheeky bastard comes into your world
  116. >He makes you smile, he gets you girls, he's genuinely wonderful
  117. >All that will end soon
  118. >You keep watch until you too fall asleep
  119.
  120. ...
  121.
  122. >"Big man?"
  123. >Your hear Imp whisper in your ear and slowly wake up
  124. "Imp?..."
  125. >He's lying in his bed, his features slack and barely breathing
  126. >Frankie is there too, whimpering
  127. >You bolt up
  128. "Imp, are you alright?"
  129. >You place a hand on him
  130. >Under his fluff, he's stone cold
  131. >"Imp huwt... Huwt so mush..."
  132. "Hang on Imp, you're going to be alright... You'll be fine..."
  133. >"No... Imp go sweep... Imp kno'..."
  134. >You start to cry, you don't care
  135. "Imp... You know I love you, right little guy?"
  136. >Imp's features soften as he smiles
  137. >"Imp wuv yoo, big man... Big man..."
  138. "Imp, save your strength..."
  139. >"No... wan' tawk... B-big man no fwuffy... But... Big man... Imp daddy. Wuv daddy."
  140. >You're openly weeping
  141. "I'm... Going to miss you Imp."
  142. >"Imp miss daddy... An' Fwankie... Imp wuv Fwankie."
  143. >This can't be happening. It can't...
  144. >"Daddy?..."
  145. "Yes Imp?"
  146. >"Night night, daddy... Imp wuv yoo."
  147. >He breathes out, and doesn't inhale again
  148. >He's gone
  149.
  150. >Your face hits the ground as you weep
  151. >Frankie whimpers and howls
  152. >Imp's gone, your best friend is gone
  153. >Nothing can fix that
  154. >You're there for hours, just lying next to him
  155. >Dawn is breaking
  156. >You remember what Imp said in the Vet's
  157. >"Be tuff, big man. Big man no cwy."
  158. >You have to be strong. For him.
  159. >You wrap Imp's body in his blanket
  160. >You put your boots on and go to the back yard
  161. >You get your shovel and begin digging
  162. >You dig in Imp's favourite corner of the yard
  163. >Where he and Frankie would lie after a big game of run-around
  164. >You place Imp's tiny body, blanket and all, in the hole
  165. >You bury your best friend, with Frankie watching on
  166. >You make a mound of dirt to mark where he sleeps
  167. >You go inside and stay there for 3 days
  168.
  169. ...
  170.
  171. 4 MONTHS LATER
  172.
  173. >Life doesn't seem so hard any more
  174. >You and Frankie live well, for Imp
  175. >You've set up a fluffy obedience school
  176. >Owners and fluffies come from all over to attend the Cheeky Imp school.
  177. >Good fluffies get toast and rides on Frankie
  178. >The fluffies learn to be the best fluffies they can
  179. >The owners ask you how you do it
  180. "I learned from the best; every fluffy needs a little love to be the best they can be."
  181.
  182. END
