The woman who was to become Emerald Phoenix was no stranger to the idea of gods being brought under control. An initiate of the Immaculate Order, she was well accustomed to the idea that the Exalted must sometimes bring rowdy deities in line. But that was the duty of the Dragonblooded. As a simple mortal monk, she was sent as part of a mission to Gethamane in an attempt to persuade the rulers of the underground city to relax their ban on the Immaculate religion.

Alas, she was no more suited for diplomacy than the last Immaculate mission. After loudly condemning the various faiths who had shrines set up in the Guild District she and her companions were beaten badly and thrown out of the mountain to freeze to death.

One by one her fellow Immaculates succumbed to the elements, leaving her alone against the northern cold. As she felt the numbness begin to envelop her body she saw a figure ahead. She stumbled forward, collapsing at the stranger's feet. When she looked up, the person in question had been replaced by a pillar of cold, silvery flame. As the heatless fire loomed overhead a voice began to speak inside of her head, offering her a chance to live to preach again, if she accepted the will of Cecelyn. Despairing, abandoned by the dragons she had dedicated her life to serving, she accepted, and suddenly the flames surrounded her, filling her with warmth.
