  1. Hey there, I normally don’t post in threads like this, mostly because I don’t fully understand Smogon’s tiering policy. So for me, I used this thread (https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/outdated-ous-tiering-policy-framework.3552154/) as reference for me to make a decision. I’m just going to give my quick 2 cents based off of what I understand from this thread. OU’s tiering policy breaks down suspects into 4 broad categories: skill, uncompetitive, broken, and unhealthy. Each of these have their own smaller subcategories in them and I’ll just make small comments on each.
  2.
  3. Skill:
  4. Team Building Skill - I can definitely agree that Zygarde is a mon that does mandate checks/counters on each team and limits “creativeness”. It’s versatility is one that is unmatched and makes it difficult to find one clear cut check/counter. More will be covered under “Broken”
  5. Battling Skill - Zygarde doesn’t really affect this part imo. You can argue that Glare makes it uncompetitive but I believe that’s more so the move itself as opposed to Zygarde. More of this will be covered in upcoming paragraphs.
  6.
  7. Uncompetitive - elements that reduce the effect of player choice / interaction on the end result to an extreme degree, such that "more skillful play" is almost always rendered irrelevant
  8. Again, like the previous paragraph, I don’t think Zygarde is an uncompetitive mon. The only problem is when Zygarde uses glare and then the battle becomes more RNG based. Outside of that, I feel like Zygarde is a mon that is manageable and has a good amount of checks/counters. Zygarde isn’t a mon that (shouldn’t) outright sweep teams provided teams are sufficiently prepared for it.
  9.
  10. Broken
  11. This sort of goes along with uncompetitive. Zygarde has nice bulk and good stats which help it thrive in the current meta. There was one point in the thread that I wanted to bring up: “An uncompetitive thing probably isn't broken, but a broken thing is more likely to be uncompetitive simply due to the unique counter / check component.” As previous posts have mentioned, Zygarde has a sufficient number of checks and isn’t limited to one or two counters. Previous posts have mentioned plenty of great meta mons such as Tangrowth, Scizor, Lando-T etc. that are easy to fit on most teams because of their general versatility. It’s not as if Zygarde is forcing the meta to use niche counters such as Full Spdef Tran + AV Tar like in the Naganadel meta. While it’s versatility is amazing (Toxic, Band, Z moves, Dual Dance etc.) and allows it to beat (or at least heavily dent) most of its checks/counters, I feel that this argument that “it can beat most of its counters” is weak. If you are basing Zygarde getting banned off of that notion, the same sentiment can be argued for many other mons in the tier. I feel that most people’s desire for Zygarde getting banned is its versatility but (in my eyes) versatility =/= brokenness.
  12.
  13. Unhealthy - elements that are neither uncompetitive nor broken, yet deemed undesirable for the metagame such that they inhibit "skillful play" to a large extent
  14. I find it hard to draw a line for this one. While playing the predicting in-game what set Zygarde is running is annoying and some sets (Glare) can cheese through matchups, I feel that Zygarde does not inhibit skillful play to a large extent as mentioned in the definition. I think people with even a decent grasp of metagame knowledge should be able to have an idea of more or less what Zygarde set is being run and to game plan around it.
  15.
  16. Anyways, that’s just my thoughts on this suspect. I’m sorry if I misinterpreted anything in the tiering policy but those are just my overall thoughts on Zygarde. I most likely will be voting no ban for the reasons mentioned.
