When Billy was 3 years old, he was hospitalized because he was very sick. Now 5, he likes watching the TV show Freddy and Friends and the idea of being an animatronic, as he wants to be big and strong. He starts acting like an animatronic and his parents Dan and Vera humor him. He keeps acting robotically, which scares his parents. Billy decides to "download an update" to help him act more like a little boy.

Dan and Vera believes the show Freddy and Friends caused him to act this way and threaten to sue. Vera is more supportive of Billy and takes him to a psychologist. Dan wants him institutionalized, but Vera believes that the phase will be over soon. Dan leaves the family and says that Billy was making his life a living hell. Billy continues to act like an animatronic, drinking motor oil (later convinced to drink olive oil), sleeping on a steel table, and only eating white food ("animatronics do not efficiently digest color"). Instead of a birthday, he celebrates his "creation day", the day he watched Freddy and Friends and realized he was an animatronic.

Years later, Billy finds his mother had died from suicide in the bathroom and calmly calls the police. Over the next year, he experiences cognitive dissonance; he believes he is an animatronic, but since he has a sense of self, he cannot be an animatronic. He decides that in order to fully become an animatronic, he needs to replace all his limbs with prosthetic ones. All the surgeons he calls refuse the offer, but Billy finds an unlicensed surgeon who lost his license due to malpractice to do the operation.

Billy feels pain when his limbs are removed. He hoped that the prosthetics would make him faster and stronger, but he only feels weaker. He meets a woman named Maliah on a chat for people who were disappointed by their surgeries. Maliah believed she was ugly and had wanted plastic surgery. Maliah and Billy become a couple, but he still wanted more procedures done on him to make him more robotic. He has metal plates attached to his face, his eyes dyed black, and his tongue removed. He asks to be referred to as "B-7". Maliah leaves him.

When he turns 21 years old, Billy looks in the mirror and is tormented by the sudden realization that he is not actually an animatronic, and had completely ruined his life. He calls the surgeon to ask if the procedures can be undone, but the surgeon says sorry and good luck. Billy contemplates for a whole day, before driving to a junkyard and crawling through the fence. He gets inside an old car and sleeps in it. He wakes up to find that the car he is in is being crushed. Although he feels excruciating pain, he feels happy, as the blood reminds him of who he truly is.
