Our story takes place in a near-future dystopian America.

Corporations and wealthy malefactors run rampant, taking advantage of the generally complacent populace and poisoning the planet with little opposition.

Enter Velocorp, a genetic research company that's discovered a miracle drug that allows people to harness the power of their own will to alter their physiology. Want to be smarter? Sure. Stronger? Faster? More beautiful? Cerebrotech is the answer.

Velocorp releases their drug to the general public at an extremely prohibitive price. As people start trying the drug, the results are evident; users of the drug find that over the course of weeks, they're able to change their own bodies. Word gets out, and a frenzy starts.

Powerhouses of society begin taking the drug to get an edge on the competition; engineers, executives, anyone in a position of power who can afford to purchase Cerebrotech is using it to some degree. Think coffee.

Then suddenly and without trace, Velocorp vanishes. Cerebrotech becomes the next gold. Over the course of a year, withdrawing Cerebrotech users start to revert back to their former selves. However, it turns out that usage came with unknown side-effects.

Withdrawing users start to find their bodies morphing into the inverse of what they wanted. Slowly, they start to lose their ability to communicate. Sharp wits turn dull, muscle-bound bodies turn to stringy, bony husks. Curbed appetites turn to gaping maws full of sharp hungry teeth. Heavy users turn to disgusting, churning masses of living flesh. Some of these creatures develop a complacent disposition, others savage and aggressive.

Suddenly, the power structures of society are turned on their head as those without the means to afford Cerebrotech are left to inherit the ruins of the planet.
