39. A sniper on a mercenary assassination team, kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier's successful kill shot forces him into hiding. Returning to the Congo years later, he becomes the target of a hit squad himself.
 40. A sniper on a mercenary assassination team, working for an unknown client, kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier's (Sean Penn's) successful kill shot forces him to go into hiding to protect himself and the members of the team from retribution. This includes abruptly abandoning his girlfriend who has no idea what is going on. The assassination, paid for by a foreign mining company, triggers wide spread chaos and death in an already inflamed Congo. Terrier returns to the Congo years later working for an NGO, but eventually finds himself to be the target of a paid hit squad somehow connected to the ministers assassination. This leads to immediate deaths and the endangerment of the people working around him, and forces him back into hiding. In trying to discover who has put a price on his head, he begins to reconnect to the members of his old assassination team, including his old girlfriend. Always aware there is no path to redemption for his crimes, he is also periodically incapacitated by a type of accumulated and evolving physical brain damage caused by the hard knocks of his occupation. Unexpectedly, given the time that has elapsed, his reconnection to his old assassination team exposes additional intrigues with immediate deadly consequences. All of his years spent in hiding, have merely delayed the twisted end game that now enfolds.
 41. Sean Penn hopes that The Gunman will do for him, that Taken did for Liam Neeson, playing a man with a deadly set of skills.

A former marine sniper(Sean Penn) who is now living a simple life, but quickly realizing now that he is a hunted man, cause of one of his sins of the past. Will he uncover this conspiracy before it's too late?

Not the best film, but at least entertaining.

Sean Penn does give a descent performance here, not playing a one dimensional action hero, like Pierce Brosnan in The November Man. He shows he has deal with his actions of his past, that has not been done to many times. Action scenes are pretty well done. Ray Winstone and Javier Bardem are effective in the there supporting roles. Although Jasmine Trinca is alright, but her chemistry with Penn feels forced. When it slows down, does kind of drag. Still an entertaining film.
 42. It's 2006. The Democratic Republic of Congo is on the verge as factions fight over mineral rights. Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) is having a fling with NGO doctor Annie and is part of a private security team. Government Minister cancels mining contracts and they are hired to assassinate the Minister. Felix (Javier Bardem) is their murky boss. Jim fires the kill shot and flees the Congo leaving Annie behind. Eight years later, Jim is back in the Congo doing humanitarian work. Gunmen attack his work site.

I don't understand why he would go back to the Congo. It's a simple thing for him to do humanitarian work somewhere else and be attacked. There's no skin off the script. There is a social justice aspect to this action thriller but it mostly leans towards action thriller. It makes it less authentic and Penn is no action hero. It simply doesn't work being caught between the fun action genre and the serious message thriller genre. It still could have worked if he stayed in the Congo trying to protect his humanitarian work from various gunmen. Instead, he's globetrotting and this turns into a romantic melodrama. The middle falls into a slow muddle. I don't know what this is trying to be but it doesn't work.
 43. A muddled bid for political relevance has led the film-makers to drag on The Gunman’s primary mission: to entertain.
