51. Description:
52. Mad Dog McCree kicked off the series for American Laser Games,
53. and it's clear that the production was done quickly and for very little money.
54. The company gathered up a camera crew and headed for a historical reenactment village,
55. and filmed a bunch of footage that's turned into a shooting gallery.
56. The laserdisc allowed the designers to quickly swap out the video track so
57. that when you "shot" the bad guy it would jump to the footage of him keeling over.
58. Limited technology, but it did the job. Of course, the experience is tainted
59. (or enhanced, depending on your perspective) by poor actors, awful direction,
60. and video quality that would look bad even in an 80s porno.
61. You can tell that the budgets got bigger and the directors got more confident with each game,
62. but even with The Last Bounty Hunter the production values can't even match late night Cinemax flicks.
63.

65.
66. Description:
67. Mad Tracks is a Micro Machines-style racing game.
68. It was developed by Load Inc.Mad Tracks has a single player mode and a multiplayer mode.
69. In single player your objective is to achieve the highest trophy (Gold) by completing objectives,
70. from racing around a track to landing your car on a face-down dart board.

74. Description:
75. Madagascar Kartz is exactly what it sounds like: a Mario Kart clone with the characters from
76. the two Madagascar films. The last movie hit theaters and DVD more than a year ago so,
77. other than the Penguins cartoon running on Nickelodeon now, there's no real timely tie in here, but Activision's
78. extending its Dreamworks contract and it's at least keeping the characters fresh in the minds of youngsters.

81.
82. Description:
83. When any high profile film hits the masses, you can usually count on a licensed game to rear its
84. head and capitalize on the advertising and hype that surrounds its silver screen counterpart. Thus,
85. when Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa turns up on game store shelves, you shouldn't be surprised.
86. Unfortunately, Escape 2 Africa (henceforth known as "Escape") is the incredibly bland,
87. poorly executed experience that most knowledgeable gamers would expect from a licensed affair;
88. it's a game that's only purpose is to cash in on the current "craze" as opposed to offering any real innovation.

90. Madden NFL 07
91.
92. Description:
93. It's always cool to hate the big guy and in the realm of videogame publishers,
94. Electronic Arts is definitely the big guy on the block. Perhaps that's partly why Nintendo fans have
95. in the past not jumped on the Madden NFL Football bandwagon as readily as Xbox and PlayStation 2 owners.
96. Maybe it's just because the GameCube versions of EA's sports offerings sometimes lacked the features of
97. the others. Or maybe it's just because Madden is not Mario or Link.
98. But whatever the case, as die-hard Nintendo fans ourselves, we're asking you to give the franchise
99. one more chance. EA has with Madden NFL 07 for Wii delivered a footballer that boasts all the features
100. of its competitors (and then some) and puts Nintendo's new controller to use in a manner that feels
101. neither gimmicky nor forced. Indeed, after a short learning curve,
102. throwing bullet passes and making bit hits feel incredibly natural -- and because the control scheme
103. is so radically different, it feels fresh, too.
104.
105. Madden NFL 08
106.
107. Description:
108. With Madden 07 it was all about getting players involved with Wii's new input devices,
109. and Madden stepped up to the challenge beautifully. This year, it's about depth and options,
110. particularly those in the multiplayer department. Madden 08 takes what 07 began and unloads a barrage of
111. gameplay options on users, whether you're looking for a better way to play Franchise mode,
112. a stronger Superstar Challenge, more local multiplayer in Party Mode, or online play against users all
113. across the world via EA Nation.
114. The core of Madden remains, and now it's about taking that design and spreading it across as many options
115. and modes as possible, and in that sense 08 is a huge success.
116.
117. Madden NFL 09

119. Description:
120. EA celebrates 20 years of Madden this year, and it's pretty obvious that the company is pulling out
121. all the stops in making this one of the best years of videogame football the industry has ever seen.
122. On the 360 and PS3 front, another giant leap has been made into the next true generation of Madden,
123. with the new Madden IQ system and a laundry list of over 75 new tweaks and feature upgrades to make sure
124. players are getting the best balling experience out there; and nobody's really stepping up to try and stop them.
125.

128. Description:
129. The Madden franchise has gone through a series of evolutionary steps as EA figures
130. out what works and doesn't on Nintendo's system. NFL 07 was the initial motion = controls PS2 port,
131. 08 was a buggy but stronger evolution, bringing about the early concept of All-Play controls,
132. 09 started the Call Your Shot phenomenon, and from where I sat a year ago it was pretty obvious where
133. the franchise would be heading.
134. Always keeping us on our toes though, EA has pushed Madden in a whole new direction with its 2010 offering,
135. adding a new visual style, new modes, options, and features designed to make the Wii experience all its own.

139. Description:
140. Visually, MadWorld speaks for itself. Its stark black and white design is utterly arresting and
141. singularly beautiful. Remarkably, the game's harsh inked lines and limited colour palette enable developer
142. Platinum to create an astonishingly detailed world.
143. It might be plundering every videogame stereotype and cliché it can but there's so much character in
144. MadWorld's art style it's hard not to be utterly bewitched.
145. It's not that MadWorld is big on polygons or very much else for that matter –as with its comic book inspiration,
146. it's power is in its suggestion, and you're left to fill in the blanks yourself.
147. Of course, that monochrome front – and liberal splashes of crimson - also help jam a useful wedge between
148. players and the myriad over-the-top on-screen atrocities.

153. Officially titled Mahjong Taikai Wii, this game is the latest entry in Koei's long-running Mahjong Taikai series.
154. Mahjong Taikai offers a realistic game of mahjong, minus the frills of games like Koei's own Jan Sangoku Musou,
155. a mahjong title that lets you face off against generals from the Dynasty Warriors series.
156. You won't find any long-dead generals here, but there is a cast of characters,

170. Ever since it was announced earlier this year, Manhunt 2 has courted controversy.
171. Creating a sequel to one of the most gruesome, dark and unique stealth action titles ever made could
172. easily be seen as a beacon for watch groups to decry video game violence.
173. For fans, the subject was much simpler: Could the title match or surpass the mechanics that made the
174. first title work so well? With the earlier ratings issue that delayed the title well behind it,
175. Rockstar London and Rockstar Games have finally released Manhunt 2 for the PS2, PSP and Wii.
176. But while the first title truly blazed new ground on the console,
177. the sequel isn't nearly as good as the original.

209. With the huge success of Wii thus far, and the ease of brining over GameCube titles
210. as "Wii-makes" to the system, Nintendo has embraced the idea of gameplay over graphics,
211. and has begun its New Play Control franchise, which specifically focuses on bumping up old,
212. great Cube titles to Wii, and adding in revamped motion and IR control where applicable.
213. The concept has already seen some pretty impressive results in Japan, with Metroid Prime hitting the Wii,
214. now complemented by impressive Corruption-inspired IR control for aiming Samus around. With Pikmin,
215. a similar technique is being used, bringing pointer control to Captain Olimar's adventure,
216. upping the ease of use considerably. New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis, however, things haven't gone so well.

222. There are three tournaments for each sport, and players can also do single-player and multiplayer

229. In much the same way that tomatoes aren't really vegetables, Mario Strikers isn't a football game.
230. To be fair, it's barely a sports game either, in the traditional sense.
231. The traditional sense being anything that doesn't involve banjo-twanging sky dives,
232. epileptic disco mushrooms and intoxication by fart, obviously.
233. Yes, ladies and gentleman, it's time to hit the pitch with Mario and chums once again,
234. as Nintendo proffers another wedge of paper-thin football relevance hanging
235. staunchly over a pile of impossibly addictive insanity.
236.
237. Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games
238.
239. Description:
240. Wii owners are no strangers to the mini-game genre. Now only a year after release,
241. Nintendo's new system is being bombarded with simple, "everyone-friendly" titles that deliver en mass,
242. but not always with quality in mind. Even looking at the top-tier titles in its category Wii is already
243. pretty saturated, with things like Mario Party, Wii Play, Namco Museum, Wario Ware, Rayman (and its sequel),
244. and countless others. Even Nintendo's own pack-in product Wii Sports gives off a similar vibe as well,
245. proving time and time again that Wii is about innovation,
246. but also about a generally simpler style of play all around - with a few exceptions, of course.
247. So when we're met by games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games,
248. it's tough to get really pumped for what can often feel like just another waggle experience.
249. At the same time, with enough style, innovative gameplay, and overall charisma even the simplest actions
250. can still be extremely fun and competitive. Case in point, Mario & Sonic's first gaming mash-up.

256. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Released shortly before the two mascots went head-to-head in Smash Bros.
257. Brawl, the original offering was a bit heavy on waggle, but also had just enough added depth to remain an
258. entertaining option in the world of Wii mini-game fests.

260. Mario Kart

262. Description:
263. About Mario Kart Wii: it pretty much grabs the gauntlet from its handheld cousin and runs with it,
264. offering one of the purest, most enjoyable Mario Kart experiences we've seen on home console in years.
265. A lot of that's thanks to the development team's understanding of what make a Mario Kart game great.
266. Stripped of the series' previous 'bigger is better' obsession – a motif which gave us thumb-defying,
267. brain-frying multi-racer button mashing and increasingly bland, excessively stretched track design,
268. this Wii version re-emphasises tight, focussed driving and mercilessly devious tactics,
269. even if ultimate victory still depends on good luck as much as anything else.
270.
271. Mario Party 8
272.
273. Description:
274. Nintendo's original Mario Party was innovative in that it recreated in the digital world the rules and
275. mechanics of a board game and then spruced the formula up with a wealth of mini-challenges. That
276. was in 1999 - two years shy of a decade ago - and like clockwork the Big N has released a new entry
277. into the series every year since, each sporting the same fundamentals with new virtual boards and
278. mini-games. Clearly this copy and paste approach to the series is enough for some; the Mario Party
279. titles were all best-sellers on GameCube and Nintendo undoubtedly hopes to repeat the success on Wii.
280. However, if you've been following the series since its inception, as we have, this latest effort really
281. shows its age - both mechanically and visually. Developer Hudson Soft had the chance to recreate
282. or at the very least improve the franchise by taking advantage of the Wii remote, but Mario Party 8
283. misuses the controller as regularly as it capitalizes on it. The end result is a title that feels like a
284. rushed GameCube project with last-minute Wii controls. If you're playing with your kids you might
285. still have fun in spite of these inadequacies, but most will be bored by the
286. tedious flow of the boards and the mediocrity of the minis.

290. Description:
291. Super Hero Squad is in all ways your average two player beat-em-up. Seriously,
292. it doesn't get much more "everyday brawler" than this.
293. Players can jump in solo (with a computer controlled buddy at all times) or grab a friend and bash the
294. heck out of enemies through stage after character-themed stage. You've got a basic attack,
295. heavy attack, jump, grab, and finisher assigned to Wii remote waggle or simple button press.
296. Since it's a licensed kids game you've also got all the main staples players have come to expect.
297. There's an extras area where you can get a few simple unlockables,
298. plenty of voiceover and pre-stage videos for kids to zone out and watch for a while,
299. and a constant tug-of-war between the developer's own attempt at pushing the game to its fullest,
300. and the game's inherent ability to shove the hardcore crowd away.
301. In the end though, if Super Hero Squad was a polished, mindless brawler,
302. it'd be "mission accomplished" all around.

316. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is one of Activision's serious cash cows,
317. and has been since its debut as X-Men Legends a few years back.
318. In fact, aside from possibly Tony Hawk and Call of Duty Marvel: Ultimate Alliance may turn out to be the
319. hottest selling of Activision's licensed product this winter, and that's a testament to not only pure
320. marketing power, but also a strong license. Since its more humble beginnings back in fall of 2004,
321. the now Ultimate Alliance engine has been centered off core dungeon-crawling gameplay.
322. Players will take control of their favorite comic book heroes, accept missions,
323. and proceed to beat the ever-loving crap out of enemy after enemy. As play continues,
324. characters level up and learn new abilities, stronger mutant powers, and overall stat increases.
325. If you've played games like Baulder's Gate or Blizzard's Diablo franchise you pretty much know the score.
326. Just insert the Marvel license, rinse, and repeat.

330. Description:
331. Ultimate Alliance 2 actually combines two of Marvel's best, fairly recent storylines -- Secret War and Civil War.
332. The game opens with SHIELD Badass Nick Fury leading Captain America, Wolverine, Spider-Man,
333. and Iron Man into Latveria to take down the new prime minister.
334. Seems even though she's been making nice with the U.S. brass, Lucia von Bardas has really been supplying
335. villains with deadly technology. Trouble is, Fury didn't mention to the supers that this wasn't a
336. government-sanctioned mission, so when Latveria retaliates by attacking New York,
337. people kind of flip out about the team's "Secret War."

341. Description:
342. Marvel Superheroes 3D: Grandmaster’s Challenge will be bundled with a selection of five superhero masks
343. one for each of the lead characters – to lend an added level of immersion for younger superheroes!
344. Each mask is embedded with relief 3D glasses in the optical outlets,
345. allowing players to experience the title in a third dimension.
346. The 3D mode can be switched on and off at will from an in-game menu
347. and can be experienced on any display with no additional technology
348. (Editor’s Note: Much like the recent Game of the Year Edition of Batman Arkham Asylym).

359. Description:
360. Medal of Honor Vanguard from Electronic Arts. The wartime first-person shooter ups the visual presentation over
361. Call of Duty 3. Vanguard is simply prettier in almost every respect, from art to engineering. But - and here's the
362. kicker -- it doesn't play as well; the overall controls aren't as tight. The end experience remains entirely playable
363. - enjoyable during most missions, especially during sniper-intensive situations -- but it's not the Holy Grail
364. of first-person shooters. So you will be forced to make a choice: prettier graphics or smoother controls?
365. And frankly, this isn't a choice that any gamer should consider.

370. There isn't a single hardcore gamer out there that didn't get goosebumps when Nintendo unveiled the Wii remote.
371. Once the concept of how the system's unique controller would be used was revealed,
372. players went crazy with the thought of how Nintendo's system would change the way gamers were played.
373. One of the biggest genres in our minds was the first-person shooter, as the ability to aim at the screen
374. and have true pixel-perfect accuracy was all but guaranteed. The launch games released, however,
375. and we quickly saw that Nintendo's Wii would have its work cut out for it in the control refinement category.
376. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption then raised the bar, and now Medal of Honor Heroes 2
377. a seemingly unimpressive "Wii-make" title brought over from PSP as a pocket developer's premiere
378. console effort - again pushes the genre to its limits, as EA's latest WWII FPS has easily become the most
379. responsive and customizable FPS experience on Wii.

384. One of two Bethesda-published Wii projects shown at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany this week
385. the other being Wheel Spin -- Medieval Games is a compilation of minis set to the backdrop of the middle ages.
386. The title includes a roster of eight playable characters ranging from knights and wizards to jesters and goons,
387. and 30 unique mini-games that put the Wii remote to use.

391. Description:
392. In Meet the Robinsons players embark on an alternate quest from the main movie.
393. Playing as Wilbur Robinson - a headstrong future child from light-years beyond
394. the game takes players through an alternate story from the Disney film. In the movie, Wilbur acts as a
395. supporting character, but designers opted to give him the star treatment in the game, as he makes for a
396. more adventurous and action-based character.
397. The game's story is set as a parallel to the movie, so core elements are taken, but the story drives itself.
398. In the game, Wilbur has possession of the Robinson time machine, and is using it to travel around the world
399. through time.

411. As you delve into Mercury Meltdown Revolution's monstrous bag of stages, you'll encounter teleports, switches,
412. platforms, levitators, coolers, heaters, shunters, zappers and countless other progress-hindering contraptions.
413. Here, it's not simply a case of finding your way from point A to B - you need to juggle multiple blobs,
414. switch states and mix colours, amongst other things, to reach your target.
415. As important as platform antics are to success, there's an equal focus on flexing the old grey matter.

420. 2D gaming is a dying subclass.
421. It's a tragic paradigm-shift that kicked off in the mid nineties and has seen the mainstream gaming market
422. embrace 3D completely. Some game companies still do 2D sidescrollers - Alien Hominid being a recent
423. success story, and SNK's Metal Slug series is another.
424. Finally, a series that has charmed bloodthirsty old-school platforming action fans for a decade has made
425. the jump to Wii. Does it offer enough to keep 2D action games kicking a little longer?
