  4. Today (13 March, 2021), the MARAT initiative launches public online venues and a presentation wiki for the crowd-sourced research effort ProjHastings, named for late US journalist and press critic Michael Hastings, and focused on identifying and documenting demonstrable malfeasance by news outlets across the world.
  5.
  6. Unlike many existing press watchdogs, ProjHastings has very narrow and specific protocols for determining what does and does not constitute failures by the press. We divide our subject matter into three basic categories:
  7.
  8. - Class A Malfeasance: In which a single journalist has published two different mutually exclusive accounts of the same incident or subject without having addressed the discrepancy
  9.
  10. - Class B Malfeasance: Same as above, but pertaining to a single outlet rather than a single journalist
  11.
  12. - Class C Malfeasance: Where one outlet writes something contradicted by source outlet elsewhere cited as credible. Note: in some cases, there will be credible explanations; these are scenarios in which those explanations should be required.
  13.
  14. Class D Malfeasance: Where a reporter has written something that (1) they are not willing to correct and where (2) they are not willing to defend the absence of a correction.
  15.
  16. In each case, the journalist or outlet suspected of having engaged in malfeasance will be given a chance to explain any perceived discrepancy, with such explanations to be added to the wiki page on the incident in question should the page go forward. In cases where the explanation is deemed compelling by our team of volunteers, such a page will not actually be published to begin with; in cases where the explanation is deemed insufficient, a page will be produced with the subject’s explanation, or, barring that, a note to the effect that no explanation was forthcoming.
  17.
  18. "How can I help?"
  19. Most volunteers keep track of articles that are published by the media, and conduct truth-verification analyses, ensuring that the media is held to a high standard, sharing their findings with other volunteers within our community.
