- THE WORLD AS IT IS
- Right now, nobody expects war. But anyone can read between the cracks. Rossiya and the Sassanids are always at each others throats. Gaul lost Alsace and Lorraine in the Prusso-Gaulic war a few decades back and Prussia's been rattling their sabres ever since, while Gaul desperately tries to restore its morale by instituting a philosophy of all-out offensive. Even so, you live in an unprecedented era of peace and trade, and a book was recently published by a Noregian author explaining why no nation should ever declare war in this modern era of trade because the economics just don't work out. So no one expects anything, but the spectre still lurks in the shadows and the corner of your vision.
- Meanwhile, the naval arms race between Albion and Prussia continues, and every nation stockpiles its military for fear of the others.
- As for the technological level of the world: Assume early to mid 1910s Earth equivalent, with some exceptions. Most everything in chapter 3 is readily available, at least to modern militaries. As for flight, lighter-than-air is quite common for passenger transport and some freight, as well as being military. Flight technology is a bit more advanced in this timeline than it was on Earth. A material derived from a particular plant via an elaborate industrial process provides a gas that is lighter than hydrogen, and it is (somewhat) less flammable, meaning zeppelins and blimps are commonplace. As for airplanes, many hobbyists exist. They've been used somewhat for war in the C.C.R. civil war going on right now, but mostly for recon; the issue at the moment is trying to get plane guns to shoot without destroying the propellers.
- GREAT POWERS
- Albion - A mighty archipelago nation that has long subjugated its island neighbors, Gael and Saxonia. They have one of the strongest navies in the world. Once a prestigious consitutional monarchy, the various trading companies toppled the government some time ago to form a buy-in oligarchic meritocracy. Albion is also bound by strict Puritan laws and institutions.
- Gaule - A fierce and proud nation with a long heritage. More than a century before, Gaule underwent a long, drawn-out revolution that culminated in the Republic, making them one of the oldest republics. Since then, they have been engaged in intermittent and destabilizing wars with the Prussian Empire, most recently losing Alsace-Lorraine some decades back. Gaule is also known for its art, music, food, and science.
- Prussian Empire - Once a motley collection of Teutonic states, these were unified quite recently to form a major power. The Prussian Empire is a latecomer to the world stage and the others begrudge its presence, as well as its militaristic inclinations. Prussia has also engaged in a dedicated campaign to eradicate heathens and ethnically impure populations.
- Rossiya - An ancient and rotten empire with an absurdly consumptive royal family while the peasantry starve. This vast nation spans across untracked taiga and tundra, which contain untold resources, if only they could be tapped. Rossiya also struggles with communist dissidents from Seljuk-Nippon. The nation has a long and bitter rivalry with the equally ancient and rotten Sassanid Caliphate, and the two have been engaged in ceaseless warfare and skirmishes for centuries.
- Zugaikotsu no Yami - A foreign land that launched itself into power after the Industrial Revolution somehow leaked its way across the sea. The nation has had minimal contact with the rest of the civilized world, and its customs are exotic and intriguing. After the Communist philosopher Yakub Al-Khalil fled Seljuk-Nippon, he landed in Zugaikotsu, and spread the idoelogy. The Communist powers toppled the Sun Emperor with the help of the shoguns, creating a militarized communist state that looks at its neighbors with hungry greed.

- SECONDARY POWERS
- Sassanid Caliphate - An ancient land with an ancient rivalry with Rossiya. The caliphate is ruled by Moslem religious priests, who enforce harsh religious rule on the populace. The western reaches of the caliphate are also a massive trade hub and through-route for trade between the southern continent and the northern lands.
- Bharata - An old land, but colonized by Albion. Revolts and rebellions constantly break out as Bharata struggles under the yoke of Albic rule, but also between the interfactional groups as they struggle to determine who should be the leader of the new nation.
- The Middle Kingdom - Once proud and august, but left behind centuries ago. The Middle Kingdom was a great power in earlier years, but never caught up with advancing Northern technology and industry. As a result, it has faced harsh demands from the militarized Zugaikotsu. The royal court is known to be immensely decadent and consumptive, and the bureaucracy an unnavigable nightmare.
- Calabria - Millenia ago, Calabria was a great empire. It now holds the Holy Land of Christianity and Islam, and is a major pilgramige site for both religions. With the help of the Prussian Empire, an old and disaffected royal lineage toppled the republic that previously existed and became a tyrannical fascist state.
- Iberia - The crossroads of the world, Iberia is home to the largest city on Earth, Constantinople, where anything can be found if one knows where to look. Iberia recently republicanized, shedding the old constitutional monarchy in a brutal and extended civil war. After the defeat of the monarchy, various aristocrats and royalist general siezed most of the aerial assets of the nation, and have turned to piracy, a menace not only to the republic that mothered them but to all her neighbors.
- Columbian Confederated Republics - A unified confederacy of republics across the sea in the Columbian continent. Long ago, it was an Albic colony, but they rebelled and gained their freedom. Since then, strange industrial technologies have created an automated society, indirectly leading to the crippling civil wars that they are currently embroiled in.

- MINOR NATIONS & TERRITORIES
- Switzer Confederation - A neutral state bounded by Calabria, Gaule, and Prussia. The south has steep mountains, but the north is largely plains and farmland, and has historically been a major through-route for continental armies, being one of the few center passages available in the hilly and wooded interior of the continent. For the past 100 years, the Conferation's neutrality has been guaranteed by a five-nation agreement of Prussia, Gaule, Albion, Calabria, and Iberia.
