Synopsis:
The school dance is tonight, you and your best female friend have agreed to go together just to get in, although staying friends. You have had feelings for her for a while now and are still a little hesitant to show her. Your friends and her friends are busy with their dates and you guys are left alone at a table. This is your chance to invite her to a dance… do you take it?

Notes:
Your character is pretty confident and playful around her despite having secret feelings. He tries to keep things light-hearted and fun but quickly gets shy when getting emotional. You’ll often have to be a little charismatic when making some of these lines fit.

[shocked tone]

Woah… I didn’t expect… I didn’t expect you to come dressed so nicely.

Your hair? It looks great as well. You know if I saw something bad I’d point it out straight away... that awkward walk you just did with your new shoes.

[react as if you got slapped on the arm] [SFX: slap]

It’s just a little odd especially considering that you don’t have a date tonight, I know I’m your “date” but that’s just because you paid the one-dollar admission for me.

[sarcastic tone]

Of course, you don’t care...

[pause]

How do I look? I know it’s less than glamorous but I think it gets the job done.

Ooh, how about my tie? I think my mom did a pretty good job.

[listener adjusts tie]

Thanks...

[serious tone]

Ok… I think I’ve had enough of staring at this night sky waiting for you, let’s go inside

[SFX: doors opening closing, crowd noises, ‘50s music]

Well, this was a lot fancier than I imagined didn’t think the school had the budget for this…

The animal cutouts, the blue lights, the decorations lining the ceiling… this is really it.

[chuckle]

Really good thing I wasn’t square on this occasion.

Hmm?

How are your feet already hurting? It’s been five minutes since we got here.

Maybe you should break in your shoes before you wear them to dance.

I don’t really care if you take them off.

Where’s your friend Lorraine? I’m sure she would save us a table for us to sit at.

[act as if you’re looking for a table]

Uhhhhh…. Well, that’s my friend’s stuff on that table over there

You know what? I’m sure he’ll let us sit with him when he comes back.

[both of you start walking towards the table] [SFX: walking]

You know I’ve heard he’s got the biggest crush on Lorraine

[pause]

[defensive tone]

Why are you getting mad at me?

[playful tone]

Just sit down already!
[improv petty argument]

I know you have the right to be defensive over your best friend but he seems like a good guy. And I think you should give him a shot, the man’s as awkward as it can possibly get, what damage could he possibly cause to a strong woman like Lorraine.

[whisper]

I also heard he’s going to ask her out tonight

[sfx: slap]

Okay! I’ll stop, I’ll stop.

[deep sigh]

How are we even friends at this point [chuckle]

At least they hired a good band to play tonight.

[chuckle]

I know they look stupid in their suits.

But that kid isn’t wearing blue like the rest of them? Do you know him?

Just speaking of which, there’s my friend and… HAH, I knew it, that man really did it. I’m proud.

Sit your ass back down, I’m not letting you disturb them

Okay before you get all excited just let them have this magic moment alright? For once be happy for her. I’ll be happy for him. Fair?

Yes, dance with them! What, like we were just gonna twiddle our thumbs and just stand around them.

We’re doing nothing but sitting around arguing and your friends and my friends are dancing as well. Why not have some fun?

I don’t know how to dance either but let’s just do it. Okay, Ms. I don’t care.

[you drag up to her feet and start dancing with her]

[pause and enjoy the moment]

Okay [scoff] Just follow my feet.

Earlier tonight I didn’t really fully appreciate how good you look.

[hesitant and awkward tone]

I know you don’t normally hear this side of me because we’re too busy pissing each other off but I thought this would be a perfect time.

I can’t really tell how you feel when you shy your face away from me like that.

[speaker holds up the face of the listener to bring back eye contact]

[start singing or humming along for a couple of seconds]

[sappy tone]

[take a light breath]

[small pause]

Throughout the years of our friendship, I feel like we’ve created a bond like nothing else. Night trips down through the suburban roads and raiding gas station convenience stores for snacks. All the meals at the local diner and gossiping about our lives. Through all of that, I’ve developed this feeling. And I don’t think that this feeling is something I’ve ever felt before with someone. I think I’m in love with you…

You have been a bright constant in this boring neighborhood and I feel like that I can’t ever repay you for the moments and life that I’ve had since I first met you in biology.

[chuckle but trying to hold back tears]

I’m done, for now, I’m sorry that felt like a lot on a casual fun night like this. I just didn’t have the patience to wait any longer…

Yeah, I know my hands are shaking. Are you Okay?

[pause]
