DDLC Ex: Cupcakes

“I guess it’s settled then, we’ll all be baking together” you say to Sayori and Natsuki

“Yayyyy!” Natsuki cries as she rushes into Sayori’s kitchen and begins to set up for a day of baking.

You look over at Sayori. She smiles at you. “Let me help you with that Natsuki” she offers.

“I can do it myself you know, it’s not like I’m some kind of baking amateur!” Natsuki rebuts, before starting to direct Sayori in preparing the kitchen. “And you too!” she shouts, looking at you.

With everything set up and ready to start, Natsuki seems more excited than ever.

“Ok! Now that we’re all ready, the first thing I want you two to do is show Chef Natsuki what you know about cupcakes!”

“Wh-what do you mean?” Sayori asks.

“You’re both going to bake me a small tray of cupcakes so I know what I’ll be working with here!” Natsuki says, confidently as she folds her arms over her chest.

“Isn’t that a waste of time?” you inquire.

“Why else do you think I wanted to come over so early? Besides, we have more than enough to make an extra dozen!” Natsuki’s tone then gets even more commanding “Well? Go on! I don’t have all day!”

You and Sayori exchange looks. Sayori gives a confident smile. You remember cooking with her a few times, but Sayori was always a better cook than you were. It’s hard to remember if she ever made cupcakes before, but you’re sure she can.

“Yes chef!” Sayori shouts in response before getting to making her cupcake batter

Soon enough both you and Sayori have your cupcakes in the ovens. It’s a good thing you decided to use Sayori’s kitchen, it’s nicer than yours and has double stack ovens. Definitely will be useful when it comes to making the full sized batches.

About twenty minutes pass before Sayori’s timer goes off. She pulls out her batch of cupcakes.

“Let Chef Natsuki see those!” Natsuki says as soon as they’re out of the oven.

Natsuki spends a solid minute looking at the cupcakes Sayori made before taking one out of the pan and taking a bite.
“Not bad…” Natsuki finally says, starting to take another bite. “A little over done, but they’ll do for the Festival.”

Sayori smiles, it looks like she really appreciates the compliment coming from the Master of Cupcakes herself.

“Just use a little less heat next time, ok?” Natsuki says. “And more sugar too!” she giggles.

Sayori suddenly looks surprised and looks at you. “Didn’t we put in our cupcakes at the same time? Why haven’t you taken yours out yet?”

Suddenly the kitchen smoke alarm goes off and you see smoke coming out of the oven you were using. You rush over and turn it off. Thankfully nothing caught fire, but as you pull your cupcakes out they’re black as charcoal.

Sayori turns off the smoke alarm before looking back at you. Natsuki is staring you down, with her fists on her waist. She is not happy.

“Unbelievable! I didn’t expect you to make good cupcakes, but come on!” she shouts.

You see Sayori smile and laugh ever so slightly before she covers her mouth with her hands.

“Well, I guess Chef Natsuki still has a lot to teach you!” Natsuki says, confidence restored. “Here! Watch and learn!”

Suddenly Natsuki is moving fast as lighting, making batches of cupcakes, even using different colors on them. Next thing you know she’s putting multiple trays of cupcakes into both ovens.

“I hope you saw all that!” She says, closing the oven. “Now, just do what I did!”

Neither you nor Sayori are sure if you really did see all that. Until today you didn’t think it was possible to make that many cupcakes that fast.

You and Sayori start making cupcake batter. The whole time Natsuki is correcting you both on mistakes you make, though it definitely seems like she’s correcting you more. Maybe it’s because you told her about Sayori not doing well? Or maybe you really are just bad at making cupcakes?

As you and Sayori finish your batches of cupcakes, Natsuki’s are just about done. You swap out the trays of fresh baked cupcakes for the new trays of batter.

“Now the best part!” Natsuki says. “Decorating!”


Just as quickly as she made them, Natsuki already has a tray of cupcakes decorated. They look just as cute as the cupcakes she brought in on the first day of Literature Club.

“Now you two show Chef Natsuki your decorating skills!”

You and Sayori decide to start off with one cupcake each. After about a minute Natsuki comes over to inspect your art.

Natsuki starts off with Sayori’s. She looks a bit frustrated. To you it looks pretty close to Natsuki’s cupcakes. “W-well, they’re pretty good I guess…” Natsuki finally says, with a slight hint of jealousy. “Not as good as mine however!” as soon as she says this you poke her in the ribs to remind her what you said about Sayori. “B-but! I’m sure by the end of the day you’ll get there!” she says, assuredly.

Sayori smiles again. “Thank you, Chef Natsuki!”

Now Natsuki comes over and looks at your cupcake. Immediately she pouts and looks up at you, angrily.

“And what is this supposed to be?” she asks.

“Well, it’s supposed to be a cat, like on yours.” you reply meekly.

“A-as if you’re ready to compare your cupcakes to mine!” she says back angrily.

Suddenly she snatches the cupcake you decorated and starts eating it.

“I guess you should just leave the decorating to me and Sayori” Natsuki says between bites of your cupcake.

“Well I guess the two of you would know more about how to make things cute than me” you say.

Both Sayori and Natsuki blush. Sayori smiles and covers her face before getting back to mixing cupcake batter.

“Hmph! I don’t need you telling me how cute I am!” Natsuki says, pouting and crossing her arms. “A-anyways! We still have plenty more cupcakes to make! So get to it!”

You laugh to yourself before getting back to helping Sayori make batter. It’s obvious Natsuki can handle half of the cupcakes on her own, but every so often she still comes over to inspect the work you and Sayori are doing.

“Looks like Sayori is really enjoying her spot as my star pupil! Keep it up!” Natsuki says to Sayori during one of her inspection stops. “And you” she says, looking right at you “I guess you’re doing better too…”

“Well thank you Chef!” you reply light heartedly.

“D-don’t think this means you can start slacking off!” Natsuki quickly barks. “We still have plenty more cupcakes to make!”

Eventually it seems like all the cupcakes are done and before the three of you sits a mountain of cupcake trays.

“Alright!” Natsuki says with a smile. “Time to decorate these puppies!” she looks at you, slightly annoyed. “I guess you can clean the kitchen while Sayori helps me…”

You almost protest, but Sayori smiles at you. “Thanks for the help! Really, I don’t think I could have kept up with Natsuki without you.”

And with that you resign yourself to your fate of cleaning. You’re not sure how, but you’ve already spilled plenty of batter on your shirt, while Natsuki and even Sayori look perfectly clean. Guess cupcakes aren’t your strong point.

As you’re cleaning you can hear Sayori and Natsuki talking as they decorate.

“Woah!” you hear Natsuki shout “That’s so cute!”

“Thanks!” Sayori responds with a smile. “I’m learning from the best!”

A big grin comes over Natsuki’s face, “You sure are!”

Eventually you finish cleaning the kitchen, putting the last clean baking tray away. Soon after the girls finish decorating, so you go over and have a look.

As you’re looking over all the cupcake designs, you notice just how much pink there is. But Natsuki and Sayori managed to make it work. Eventually Natsuki puts her hand on Sayori’s shoulder.

“Sayori here really is a natural at cupcakes!” Natsuki says. “We should get together and do this again sometime!”

Sayori smiles, “Ok! You got it!”

You and the girls fill Sayori’s refrigerator with trays and trays of cupcakes. There’s no way anything else is getting put in there.

Finally you look at the clock and notice it’s barely half past one in the afternoon. You promised to spend the day with Sayori, and you doubt Natsuki will want to leave this early.

Finally, Natsuki speaks up, “So…. What do you want to do now?” she says looking at you and Sayori.

“How about we watch some TV?” Sayori replies.

“Yay!” shouts Natsuki as she jumps on the couch, sitting on her legs and bouncing up and down.

Sayori turns the tv on and sits down next to Natsuki. You follow and sit next to Sayori.

“What do you want to watch, Natsuki?” Sayori asks.

“Umm….” Natsuki trails off quietly. “D-do you watch any anime?” she asks meekly.

“Oh! I used to watch stuff like Doraemon and Sailor Moon when I was younger. And I’ve watch a couple episodes of different shows when I’d visit Anon’s sometimes.”

“Have you ever watched Boku no Hero Academia?” Natsuki asks nervously.

“Is that the one where all the kids go to the super hero school?” Sayori asks, unsure of herself.

“Yes! That one!” Natsuki lights up hearing Sayori say that.

“Well, I’ve only seen a few episodes when Anon was watching them.”

“Well then…!” Suddenly Natsuki grabs the remote and before you know it she has the first episode playing. “I know the first thing we’re gonna watch!”

Before you know it, you’re on the last episode of the first season, the part where All Might fights Nomu. Natsuki has been watching excitedly the whole time, so has Sayori. Finally it gets to All Might’s monologue about going beyond one-hundred percent. As soon as he starts, almost as if she has it memorized, Natsuki says it along with him. As All Might shouts “Plus Ultra!” so does Natsuki, throwing her fist up in the air in excitement.

Sayori pays more attention to Natsuki than she does the actual show. “Wow! You’re really into this, aren’t you Natsuki?” Sayori asks as the fight finishes.

Natsuki quickly blushes, lowering her fist, still raised high above her head.
“Don’t be embarrassed, it’s cute!” Sayori says with a smile.

Natsuki blushes even harder and pouts, “I’m not cu-”

But before she can finish, Sayori wraps her arms around Natsuki. “Sure you’re not” she says. It looks like a tear is about to go down her cheek, but she looks happy as ever.

Natsuki is still pouting, but quickly smiles and hugs Sayori back.

You look at the clock, it’s about eight-thirty at night. “Well time’s really gone by, today, hasn’t it?”

“Sure has!” Sayori says. Suddenly she looks at the clock and looks at Natsuki. “Natsuki? Shouldn’t you be getting home soon?”

Natsuki looks disappointed, almost hurt. She frowns “I mean, I guess…”

You and Sayori can tell Natsuki isn’t ready to leave.

“Maybe she can stay here? I mean your parents are gone and you’ve got that spare room.” you suggest.

Natsuki suddenly brightens up and looks at Sayori with wide, puppy eyes.

“Can I, can I!?” Natsuki repeats.

“Won’t your dad be worried when you don’t come home?” Sayori asks, worriedly.

“Hmph!” Natsuki scoffs, “I doubt he’ll even notice….” she says, looking both sad and angry.

“Well....” Sayori trails off for a second. “I guess if it won’t be a problem with you, you’re more than welcome to-”

“Yay! Thank you Sayori!” Natsuki says before Sayori can even finish her sentence. She jumps over and hugs Sayori.

As Natsuki runs over and grabs her overly full backpack that she hadn’t touched since she came in, Sayori turns to you.

“Thank you for today. I’m glad you made me spend time with you, and it was nice getting to know Natsuki better.”

“I’m glad I could help…” you say.

“So…” Sayori says, “I guess me and Natsuki will be fine on our own.”

“Yeah!” You hear Natsuki say. As you and Sayori turn you notice she has white and pink striped pajamas on. Did she have those with her? “No boys allowed!” she says, sticking her tongue out at you before running over next to Sayori with her backpack.

“Alright then” you say with a smile. “It looks like you girls will do just fine.”

Sayori walks you to the door. As you’re leaving you feel her grab your shoulder and embrace you as you turn around. You can feel that she’s starting to tear up.

“Thank you again, so much…” Sayori says, her face still on your shoulder. “It’s been awhile since I’ve felt like this…”

“I’m glad I could be here for you” you assure her.

Sayori sniffles slightly and loosens her embrace. She smiles at you.

“Well, I guess we’ll see each other at the festival tomorrow!”

“Yeah, guess so” you say back.

“Ok!” Sayori says brightly. “See you then!”

“Ok!” you reply. “Have fun with Natsuki!”

You can see through the door that Natsuki heard her name and she looks over at you and Sayori and sticks her tongue out with a smile. You swear you see her pulling out a GameCube and several games from her bag. Did she plan on having a sleepover? You sure didn’t.

As you’re leaving, you can hear Natsuki shout, “Hey Sayori! Do you like Smash Brothers! Or maybe you want to watch Boku no Hero Academia season two!”

Walking away you hear Sayori laugh and say “I’m sure we can fit both in.” Almost too far to hear anything from Sayori’s house, you swear you can hear Natsuki.

“Yayyyy!”

Finally you get home after a long day of baking. As you’re getting ready for bed you smile to yourself, glad that you’ve become closer to Sayori. You may have been friends for years, but now it feels like you’re closer than ever. Not only that, but you’ve helped her make a new friend in Natsuki already.

As you drift off to sleep, you think about the day ahead and how much fun you and Sayori are going to have at the festival.
