  12. Writing Dialogue - Quotation Marks

  14. In a story, the most common reporting verbs are “say” and “ask”. These are more or less invisible to readers. (It’s not strange to use these words many times.)
  15. - Separate speech from the rest of the sentence with commas:
  16. “It’s not easy,”_she said,_“to be a single mother.”
  17. She said, “It’s not easy to be a single mother.”
  18. “It’s not easy to be a single mother,” she said.
  19. - Question marks and exclamation marks can be in the middle of the sentence, but periods can’t.
  20. “I don’t want to go swimming,” he said. (use a comma instead)
  21. “Why not?” she asked.
  22. “It’s freezing!” he answered.
  23. - If you use the person’s name and the quotation is at thee beginning of the sentence, you can switch [name] and “said”:
  24. “I don’t want to go swimming,” said Tom.
  25. “It’s not easy,” said Anna, “to be a single mother.”

  32. 6 “I don’t know,”_my father replied,_“but I think you should find out.”
  33. 7 According to the booklet, “The school will provide medical insurance while you are a student.”
  34. 8 My advisor said, “It doesn’t cover everything, so you might want to buy insurance from a private company.”
