- Writing Dialogue - Quotation Marks
- In a story, the most common reporting verbs are “say” and “ask”. These are more or less invisible to readers. (It’s not strange to use these words many times.)
- - Separate speech from the rest of the sentence with commas:
- “It’s not easy,”_she said,_“to be a single mother.”
- She said, “It’s not easy to be a single mother.”
- “It’s not easy to be a single mother,” she said.
- - Question marks and exclamation marks can be in the middle of the sentence, but periods can’t.
- “I don’t want to go swimming,” he said. (use a comma instead)
- “Why not?” she asked.
- “It’s freezing!” he answered.
- - If you use the person’s name and the quotation is at thee beginning of the sentence, you can switch [name] and “said”:
- “I don’t want to go swimming,” said Tom.
- “It’s not easy,” said Anna, “to be a single mother.”
- ---
- practice 12 - Add quotation marks and other puctuation, and fix the capitalization.
- 2 “Why not?” I asked.
- 3 “Medical care in the United States is very expensive,” they answered.
- 4 According to a booklet about health care in the United States, a two-hour visit to the emergency room can cost more than $3,000.
- 5 I asked, “What happens if I can’t pay?”
- 6 “I don’t know,”_my father replied,_“but I think you should find out.”
- 7 According to the booklet, “The school will provide medical insurance while you are a student.”
- 8 My advisor said, “It doesn’t cover everything, so you might want to buy insurance from a private company.”
- ---
- “I don’t know,”_my father replied._“I think you should find out.”
