Writing Dialogue - Quotation Marks

In a story, the most common reporting verbs are “say” and “ask”. These are more or less invisible to readers. (It’s not strange to use these words many times.)
- Separate speech from the rest of the sentence with commas:
	“It’s not easy,”_she said,_“to be a single mother.”
	She said, “It’s not easy to be a single mother.”
	“It’s not easy to be a single mother,” she said.
- Question marks and exclamation marks can be in the middle of the sentence, but periods can’t.
	“I don’t want to go swimming,” he said. (use a comma instead)
	“Why not?” she asked.
	“It’s freezing!” he answered.
- If you use the person’s name and the quotation is at thee beginning of the sentence, you can switch [name] and “said”:
	“I don’t want to go swimming,” said Tom.
	“It’s not easy,” said Anna, “to be a single mother.”

7 According to the booklet, “The school will provide medical insurance while you are a student.”
8 My advisor said, “It doesn’t cover everything, so you might want to buy insurance from a private company.”
