  27. Yorktown: (1981) The final major battle where a huge British force was surrendered and effectively ended the war in American (war still occuring in other parts of the world). The British troops were led by Cornwallis after a long campaign of furiously chasing Nathaniel Greene through the southern back country. Exhausted, the British troops retreated to Yorktown, which is on the coast of South Carolina and where Cornwallis thought that he would be safe and could resupply because the British controlled the sea. However, the French general Rochambeau received news from the French navy led by Admiral De Gras, that they would be available for 2-3 weeks to help. Rochambeau then informed Washington, and through amazing coordination, the American and French armies advanced on Yorktown while the French navy defeated the British navy to gain control of the sea outside of Yorktown trapping Cornwallis. Rochambeau, an expert on siege warfare, led the troops in the besieging of Yorktown. Finally, Cornwallis and his troops were forced to surrender, and it is said that the British band was playing the song “The Day the World was Turned Upside-Down”.
