- Are you a workaholic? Ask your partner the questions on p. 125 of the new handout. How many “yes” answers do you have?
- ---
- -aholic and -oholic are used with a lot of different nouns to mean someone who is addicted to (or really likes) something
- alcoholic
- workaholic
- chocoholic
- shopaholic
- (Informally, this is a productive ending, because you can put it on a new word and people will have no problem understanding you. However, very few formal words exist like this.)

- This week: Intensifiers and degree complements.
- ---
- intensifier = a word that makes another word stronger (really, very, extemely, rather)
- (We could also include words that make others weaker, like “somewhat” and “slightly”.)
- degree complement = a complement (phrase at the end of a sentence) that gives a consequence of the degree of another word
- This is too expensive to buy. = This is so expensive that I can’t buy it.
- = It’s not cheap enough to afford.
- This is so expensive that I would need to take out a loan to buy it.
- This is such an expensive car that I could buy a house for the same price.
- ---
- These both can answer “how + adjective/adverb” questions, or “how much/many”.
- p. 127 exercise 2 - With your partner, underline the degree complements and then write a “how” question for each one.
- 1 How rushed is Denise (at work these days)?
- 2 How much energy does she have (at the end of the workday)?
- 3 How busy is she?
- (“How lonely is she feeling?” asks about the intensifier phrase.)
- 4 How much is (there) going on at work?
- 5 How fast do things move?
- 6 How slowly does her administrative assistant work?
- 7 How hard does Peter work?
- 8 How dedicated is he (to his job)?
- 9 How much does he love his family?
- 10 How competitive is he (about his job)?
