  1. COUNTDOWN is a version of the successful
  2. TV words and numbers game adapted for popular
  3. home computers. The game includes an in-built
  4. dictionary containing thousands of words and may be
  5. played as a one or two player game.
  6.
  7. LOADING
  8.
  9. Insert the tape into the recorder and rewind if
  10. necessary. Type in LOAD "" and press ENTER, then
  11. press PLAY on your recorder.
  12.
  13. On loading, the title screen is displayed. Press
  14. any key to continue.
  15.
  16. Both players are prompted for their names,
  17. which are entered on the keyboard, followed by
  18. ENTER.
  19.
  20. The game itself consists of 9 separate rounds of
  21. Number and Word games, starting with the Anagram
  22. Game. In the 1st round, Player 1 selects 9 Vowels or
  23. Consonants (by pressing the 'V' or 'C' keys at the
  24. bottom of the keyboard). Once all 9 letters have been
  25. chosen, the Players have a 30 second Countdown,
  26. during which they attempt to make up the longest
  27. word that they can from their selection of nine
  28. letters.
  29.
  30. When the Countdown has ended, both players
  31. are prompted to enter their words on the keyboard,
  32. followed by ENTER. Mistakes can be altered with the
  33. delete key (Note that DELETE is achieved on the
  34. Spectrum by holding down the CAPS SHIFT key
  35. whilst pressing the zero key). The words are checked
  36. against the computer's own dictionary. If the
  37. computer can not find a particular word, the players
  38. are asked if they are sure that the word is valid. Press
  39. 'Y' for a valid word, and 'N' if it is incorrect. The
  40. player with the longer valid word gets 1 point for
  41. each letter in his word.
  42.
  43. At the end of the round, the computer will
  44. display the best word that it could obtain.
  45.
  46. Rounds 2 and 3 are the same as round 1, except
  47. that Player 2 chooses the letters in Round 2.
  48.
  49. When the three Anagram rounds are over, play
  50. continues with the Numbers Round. Here, Player 2
  51. chooses six numbers from four rows. The 1st row
  52. and the other rows have small numbers, all less
  53. than 10. When choosing how many numbers to take,
  54. the player uses the number keys at the top of the
  55. keyboard, followed by ENTER. Remember not to
  56. choose more than 4 numbers from the 1st Row, and
  57. not more than 6 numbers altogether. In fact the
  58. computer shows how many numbers are allowed, in
  59. brackets after the 'How many do you want from
  60. row...' prompt at the bottom of the screen.
  61.
  62. Once the six numbers have been chosen, they
  63. are displayed in six boxes at the top of the screen.
  64. You will then be asked to 'Press any key to spin
  65. CECIL'. Cecil will choose a random number, and you
  66. will then have 30 seconds to get this number by
  67. adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. You do
  68. not have to use all the numbers.
  69.
  70. At time up, both players will be prompted to
  71. enter the figures that they managed to get, by using
  72. the number keys followed by ENTER.
  73.
  74. The players will then have to enter their
  75. calculations, one operation at a time, until they reach
  76. their target number (displayed in the bottom right
  77. hand corner of the screen). Each operation should be
  78. entered as follows "number operator number =
  79. result", eg "10 + 2 = 12". The computer will only
  80. accept calculations in this format and will not allow
  81. invalid calculations - ie operations where the result
  82. will be negative, greater than 999 or a fraction. If you
  83. do not reach your target number, your attempt will
  84. be disqualified.
  85.
  86. The player whose result is closer to CECIL's
  87. target number gets 7 points. If neither player can get
  88. close, CECIL displays how the calculation should be
  89. done, line by line, in exactly the same way that the
  90. players would enter their calculations.
  91.
  92. After the numbers round, there are three more
  93. letters rounds, with the players again taking turns to
  94. choose vowel or consonant. The next round is
  95. another numbers round, followed by the Countdown
  96. Conundrum.
  97.
  98. In this final round, both players have 30-seconds
  99. to unravel a nine letter anagram. The first player to
  100. spot the word gets 10 points. Player 1 presses the
  101. 'A' key to stop the clock, and Player 2 presses the 'L'.
  102. If you stop the clock, you must immediately type in
  103. what you think the anagram is. If you are wrong, then
  104. the other player has the rest of the countdown to try
  105. and work it out - so be careful!
  106.
  107. At the end of the game, the final scores are
  108. displayed, along with the winner's name. Press 'Y' to
  109. play again, or 'N' to stop the program.
  110.
  111. Remember that you have a time limit when
  112. entering your answers, so be quick!
  113.
  114. For a one-player game, press ENTER when asked
  115. for Player 2's name. You must score as many points
  116. as you can, and try to beat the computers' best
  117. words and calculations.
