  14. Jun 14 21:09:59 <Kerrus> Anyways I'll wait a bit for if Esarey shows up, if not we'll j ust do the scouting portion
  15. Jun 14 21:11:29 <Kerrus> Whisper is a system cloaked in mystery- buried away along a once disabled portion of the Hypergrid, festooned with warning beacons, stories of ghosts, demons, and greater evils- but also, according to the oldest legends, was the site of the Open Palm Federation's greatest scientific academia- an entire star system devoted to the study of the strange, the unknown- and yes, the dangerous
  16. Jun 14 21:11:49 <OmegaPaladin> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g--3RuCu7k
  17. Jun 14 21:13:09 <Kerrus> Two years ago, the Diamantia Commonwealth took a contract from the Samsaran Republic, and launched an incursion into the system. The survivors, what few there were, told of a strange place- rich in nebular gasses and ionic activity giving strange sensor backscatter. Great pillars of Xan origin projected control fields- reaching into the very nervous systems of ships that dared enter and gradually, piece by piece, subverting them.
  18. Jun 14 21:14:24 <Kerrus> ships taken by these arrays, which the DC nicknamed 'Hijack Arrays' were separated from their crews- those individuals and any supplies on board were dumped on an OPF era megastructure, an O'Neill cylinder, ostensibly to await pickup by an OPF flotilla that no longer exists. Their vessels, meanwhile, were moved deeper into the system, from array to array, to serve an unknown purpose
  19. Jun 14 21:15:34 <Kerrus> Now the Samsarans have vowed to pay back those foolhardy DC prison barges lives- those lost who didn't really have a choice because the DC believe in 'exploration' and apparently given the choice of immediate death or dereliction of duty
  20. Jun 14 21:15:35 <Kerrus> to the last
  21. Jun 14 21:15:37 <Kerrus> chose the former
  22. Jun 14 21:15:56 <Kerrus> except in the case of like one frigate captain who said 'fuck this I'm out' and is the only source of intel into the system interior
  23. Jun 14 21:17:36 <Kerrus> They've returned, and returned for a great purpose. The Arrays hide a secret- for great quantities of smartmatter machinate within the system's deep interior- ancient, inaccessible, and well hidden. Other secrets of a forgotten age must surely lie within, for why else would the Open Palm Federation, at it's greatest of heights, quarantine this system with such impressive technology.
  24. Jun 14 21:18:26 <Kerrus> Nothing like the pillars, the arrays, has been seen before. Even Majestic twelve has been subdued on the matter. What secrets do the hold? What do they hide? You are here, you are all here, to find out
  25. Jun 14 21:19:32 <OmegaPaladin> Where is the O'Neil colony and Xan Pylons - outer system?
  26. Jun 14 21:19:47 <Singh> <Sanaka> "Perhaps they found something terrible, buried in the past." <Sanandana> "But why not destroy it if it were so?!" <Sanatana> "Perhaps it is a truth they could not deny in their compassion, but could not allow to escape." <Sanatkumara> "Whatever occurs, we shall find the truth today!"
  27. Jun 14 21:20:26 <Kerrus> The pylons are scattered throughout the system. The Cylinder is in the outer system, near one of the pylons, and thus far attempts to reach it have failed (ie: ship gets too close, gets hijacked or warded off by servitors flying white triangles
  28. Jun 14 21:20:49 <Kerrus> the servitors don't appear to be of the 'developed sapience' variety, and still think it's the height of the open palm federation
  29. Jun 14 21:22:13 <Kerrus> Many of you arrive emboldened, slayers of monsters, confident in the force you have arrayed, the allies you have gathered. It is a mighty force, enough to make significant gains in an infestation like Tau Ceti. The Samsarans may believe that the smartmatter that has come to this system came later. It may be routed out, given time and effort. It may be purged, and with its purging, the secrets of the system revealed. If only one would dare.
  30. Jun 14 21:23:03 <Kerrus> You have been tasked (OOC: ie, the orders are) with identifying a number of Pylons along the system's perimeter, and disabling them using any means necessary in order to allow access to the system interior.
  31. Jun 14 21:23:29 <Kerrus> As the scouting element, we'll be focusing more on locating the pylons and gaining access, rather than on penetrating the system's interior
  32. Jun 14 21:24:13 <OmegaPaladin> Start mapping the hijack field if possible - see if there is a pylon that can be safely approached. Aside from any information on the hijack effect, this might have a historical archive or other useful info.
  33. Jun 14 21:25:00 <Singh> Lacking inbuilt jump drives, the four Kumara brothers are likely to arrive with that of the Buzz Aldrin, possibly slightly apart in order to maintain stealth. They will be under orders from the Aldrin, but would request permission to approach the edge of a control field to see if it effects biological entities like it does mechanical ones
  34. Jun 14 21:26:02 <Kerrus> Based on the DC's data, you've identified a pylon that might be approachable. It's out of position, perhaps knocked off vector by a comet's passage, you aren't sure. The field around it is a little weaker, and there are gaps in its coverage-likely from damage. You might be able to space walk a boarding team through one of them, but you're wary of getting a ship too close
  35. Jun 14 21:26:50 <Kerrus> One of Section XIV's destroyer groups decides to seize the glory- judging that they're small enough to get through the gap
  36. Jun 14 21:27:04 <Singh> The Kumara brothers as a note, can all hold brigade sized forces, with Sanatkumara being able to hold a full division. If the field does not affect biologics, we can carry someone in.
  37. Jun 14 21:27:16 <OmegaPaladin> "Take it slow - there's a decent chance it could perform subversion on biological vessels given the similarities to smatter."
  38. Jun 14 21:28:17 * OmegaPaladin has a team led by *Aldevran, similar to the Venus survey teams in skill and strength
  39. Jun 14 21:28:40 <Singh> "Affirmative." They'll skirt the edge of a control field, judging if it has any effect on their protoplasmic based biology. They'll pull back if it looks like they are being actively subverted beyond what they can regenerate.
  40. Jun 14 21:28:54 <Kerrus> they get within a certain distance, and then the pylon broadcasts a warning message indicating that the ships have been identified as breaking quarantine and have been seized- and sure enough, three of five destroyers cut thrusters and drift into the field, while the other two manage to divert away
  41. Jun 14 21:29:01 <Kerrus> the destroyers I mean
  42. Jun 14 21:30:03 <Kerrus> The dragons skirt the field and- it's very strange. There's a pressure to it, not dissimilar to that one time Brahma frowny faced at them for the noodle incident, and one of the brother's *almost* dips into the field proper before catching themself
  43. Jun 14 21:31:48 * OmegaPaladin prepares the jetpacks!
  44. Jun 14 21:32:11 <Singh> The collective shame of the noodle incident bothers the brothers as they hover at the edge of the field proper. <Sanaka> "*Aldevran, This field was designed with space monsters in mind. We are deploying a single wyvern ahead of us." they all have Wyvern drones per L module. One single wyvern will detach from a wing to enter the field proper, the other four remotely monitoring effects.
  45. Jun 14 21:32:33 <Singh> other four dragons*
  46. Jun 14 21:33:17 <Kerrus> Anyways @OP your team slowboats through the field, which takes the better part of six hours. In that time, a white triangle/OPF bouncer silently arrives and begins offloading Section crews from their ships. The Wyvern enters the field and manages to get pretty close before the brothers lose control/contact with it
  47. Jun 14 21:34:34 <Kerrus> The exterior hull of the pylon is dotted with various doodad greebley bits, and your AI is getting all kinds of interesting readings. The pylon appears to be drawing on the ionic charge of the system for power, in addition to what it's sure are reactors, and it's pumping a hell of a big charge into the field
  48. Jun 14 21:34:53 <Singh> Sanatkumara, having a Lab module, will enter the field now to examine it with SCIENCE! Cautiously. His tail is held by his brothers, ready to pull him back in case something goes wrong.
  49. Jun 14 21:35:10 <Kerrus> after some surveying of the exterior hull, you identify an access port- likely for maintenance, and board.
  50. Jun 14 21:35:16 <Singh> they'll be 'shallowly' entering the field fyi
  51. Jun 14 21:35:24 <OmegaPaladin> (love the image Singh)
  52. Jun 14 21:35:40 <Kerrus> Meanwhile, Sanatkumara skims the field. It definitely feels like Brahma is standing behind him and he's said something incriminating
  53. Jun 14 21:35:55 <Kerrus> all he wants to do is go and hide behind the pillar so his father can't get the angry eyebrows at him
  54. Jun 14 21:36:51 <Kerrus> and he makes a ready attempt at doing so, before getting pulled out. Post incident analysis of the data indicates that the field appeared to interface directly with his nervous system, putting out a lot of interesting signals not dissimilar to the systems the dragons themselves use for nonverbal communication
  55. Jun 14 21:37:28 <Singh> <Sanatkumara relays his findings on the shared group chat with *Aldevran> "This field is designed to effect and induce fear in large space organisms. It is inciting a strong fear/shame response, with the offer of safety behind the Pylon. It is tapping directly into our conciousness the same way we talk to each other non-verbally. It is...odd."
  56. Jun 14 21:37:47 <Kerrus> Another broadcast: "Scyrrian Vessels are to desist in their attempts to penetrate the field. Further action will escalate response."
  57. Jun 14 21:38:24 <Singh> <Sanaka> "Aldevran, do we have any data on the Scyrrians?"
  58. Jun 14 21:39:16 <OmegaPaladin> On the Buzz, *Alice and other AIs start combing through their data on OPF history
  59. Jun 14 21:40:37 <Kerrus> None of their data on OPF history mentions any species or polity as 'Scryrrians'
  60. Jun 14 21:41:11 * Singh_ (androirc@sorcery-25g.qka.56.119.IP) has joined
  61. Jun 14 21:41:29 <Kerrus> but some deep dives do get a ping- a Scyrrian Collective is mentioned in an old EXCEED report detailing an unidentified species mentioned by the Gardener during their firt contact.
  62. Jun 14 21:42:29 <Kerrus> "As always, [mankind] [is] very interesting. Well, [mankind] and the Scyrrians."
  63. Jun 14 21:43:03 <Kerrus> Based on the transmission, you're pretty sure it's identified the brothers as these 'Scryrrians'
  64. Jun 14 21:43:47 <Singh> <Sanatana> "I suppose it looks like they've thought of everything." Sanatkumara will remain back now and study the effect. Did the Wyvern pick up the same feeling as it pushed through, just before loosing contact?
  65. Jun 14 21:44:17 <Kerrus> Oddly, no. You lost control of the Wyvern because the tower directly interfered with your control signal
  66. Jun 14 21:45:02 <Singh> Eeenteresting. So it picks up the larger dragons as ships...but not the smaller wyverns. Would the smaller wyvern loop back on it's own accord or is it lost forever?
  67. Jun 14 21:45:23 <Kerrus> it's taken up station by the Section XIV ships
  68. Jun 14 21:45:42 <OmegaPaladin> *Aldevran continue moving into the pylon. Cautiously - they could have internal defenses. Current goals are data archives and control terminals.
  69. Jun 14 21:46:23 <Kerrus> Anyways, boarding the pylon takes time, but eventually your teams make their way inside, down ancient well lit corridors, and to an observation deck of some kind. There are sevitors of various sorts present, but they don't appear to notice you. A number of monitors display various data- mapping coordinates for the three nearest towers, system status, unresolved reports (over a hundred thousand), a priority alert
  70. Jun 14 21:46:23 <Kerrus> to the garrison flotilla, currently MIA, dated twenty thousand years ago
  71. Jun 14 21:47:11 <Kerrus> positioning updates- sifting through the data that's available, you can confirm that this pylon was knocked out of position by a gravity wake- but *not* by a comet as you suspected
  72. Jun 14 21:48:05 <Kerrus> instead, it appears that a high mass object moved out of the system's interior, high enough mass to pull the pylon out of position. The rest of the network compensated, but the pylon's stabilization thrusters had insufficient fuel to reposition it afterwards
  73. Jun 14 21:48:15 <Kerrus> so it's been out here, out of position, for milennia
  74. Jun 14 21:49:04 * OmegaPaladin checks on the priority alert and system status. See about sifting through the huge volume of reports with all the computing power on the Buzz, if possible
  75. Jun 14 21:49:16 <Kerrus> there's scant historic data, alas. Some information on the system being a level 12 quarantine, but you have no idea how many levels OPF quarantine protocol goes to, or if levels get higher the more dangerous or lower the more dangerous
  76. Jun 14 21:49:46 <Kerrus> a lot of the alerts seem to be the network losing contact with OPF fleet nodes. Lots of stuff dating back during the fall of the OPF
  77. Jun 14 21:49:51 <Kerrus> some relatively recently
  78. Jun 14 21:50:19 <Kerrus> an OPF network node went active in the last two thousand years or so briefly somewhere in the galactic southwest
  79. Jun 14 21:50:26 <Singh> The Kumara brothers will attempt to raise the Wyvern through Velan wing-song, given the primary method doesn't quiet work. They may also try blinking lasers. Mostly the wyvern is it's own entity, so it should be able to act and do stuff on it's own absent of it's parent dragons. Granted, with no instructions it'll just loiter and maybe eat a bit.
  80. Jun 14 21:50:54 <Singh> nomnomnom on some of the tasty Section XIV destroyers
  81. Jun 14 21:51:10 <Kerrus> The wyvern appears to be following the white triangle around
  82. Jun 14 21:51:23 <Kerrus> as it finishes loading up Section XIV crew and departs
  83. Jun 14 21:51:42 <Singh> aw, fair enough
  84. Jun 14 21:52:09 <Kerrus> @OP the AI's on the buzz are having trouble sifting through the data, mainly because the pylon has been hacking the ship for the better part of three hours
  85. Jun 14 21:52:13 <Kerrus> and it's *really good at it*
  86. Jun 14 21:52:55 <Kerrus> they've managed to stave if off so far, but it's approaching a level of adaptability that is, frankly, unexpected. They suggest moving the flotilla away from the pylon, and picking up your team with a shuttle or something else that can't easily be hacked.
  87. Jun 14 21:53:36 <Singh> If the holes in th field have been mapped, the Kumara brothers could send several wyverns through that, as it would allow contact to continue while still being small enough to fit.
  88. Jun 14 21:53:45 <Kerrus> anyways, you don't have much luck with the data- if you had access to an OPf codebook or some way to interpret the information, it might be useful, but it's mostly 'node 0768 down' 'node 0769 down' etc
  89. Jun 14 21:53:57 <Kerrus> the holes aren't like, tunnels
  90. Jun 14 21:54:05 <Kerrus> they're areas where the field is weaker
  91. Jun 14 21:54:15 <Singh> ah
  92. Jun 14 21:54:21 <Kerrus> the field appears to be an overlapping lattice projected by the various towers
  93. Jun 14 21:54:33 <Kerrus> this one is out of position, so there's areas where that lattice is weakened
  94. Jun 14 21:54:57 <Singh> gotcha. Well, would a wyvern still be bale to get through those weaker areas as opposed to the strong one where it lost contact?
  95. Jun 14 21:55:15 * OmegaPaladin marks down the OPF node locations (especially the one by and withdraws the flotilla. *Lazar and Wanda will rig a shuttle for maximum subversion resistance.
  96. Jun 14 21:55:46 <OmegaPaladin> (especially the one that went active)
  97. Jun 14 21:55:58 <Kerrus> rigging for subversion resistance basically involves ripping out all the computers and running it on fly by wire
  98. Jun 14 21:56:12 <Kerrus> the towers do not appear to be able to hijack atomic rockets
  99. Jun 14 21:56:17 <OmegaPaladin> I figured as much.
  100. Jun 14 21:56:37 <OmegaPaladin> sometimes simple is best
  101. Jun 14 21:57:39 <Kerrus> Anyways, you manage to get your crews out. What are you going to do now? the white triangle and it's wyvern escort are heading away from this tower and towards another one. The Section XIV ships are heading deeper into the system
  102. Jun 14 21:59:08 <Singh> The Kumara Brothers will await orders on what to do next. Sanatkumara will be working on trying to figure a way to mutate some resistance to the subversion
  103. Jun 14 22:01:20 <OmegaPaladin> Actually, I'd like to have the crews do more research - the shuttle was just being prepared for when we eventually left. I was hoping to study the field in more detail - what's doing the hacking, is there a way to whitelist ships or turn the thing off, maybe get an idea how it works
  104. Jun 14 22:01:50 <Kerrus> based on the field permutations, you suspect it's some kind of organic supercomputer
  105. Jun 14 22:02:06 <Kerrus> each tower talks to each other tower, adapts, modifies, improves, takes readings, etc.
  106. Jun 14 22:02:15 <Kerrus> it might even be a hyperbrain
  107. Jun 14 22:02:31 <Kerrus> not the same sort as Golcom's bolton, more like a dedicated to task model
  108. Jun 14 22:03:22 <Kerrus> the system appears to be hardcoded to recognize the white triangles and other specific ships.
  109. Jun 14 22:03:40 <Singh> Possible idea: if you ahve a shuttle going in...
  110. Jun 14 22:03:57 <Kerrus> but if you're looking at this right, the towers would take control of even a Xan warship if it entered the restricted zone
  111. Jun 14 22:03:58 <Singh> can it take in a cord? Maybe we can tow this one tower out of place further, so that it's the single field that can be studied in more depth
  112. Jun 14 22:04:13 <OmegaPaladin> Damn...
  113. Jun 14 22:04:35 <Singh> if it's just a single field, it'll be at it's weakest and thus we'd have a better shot at developing resistances or such
  114. Jun 14 22:04:59 * OmegaPaladin has visions of luring a battle moon to Whisper
  115. Jun 14 22:05:06 <Kerrus> do eeet
  116. Jun 14 22:06:24 <Singh> So orders, OP?
  117. Jun 14 22:06:35 <OmegaPaladin> Also, are there any ships docked on the pylon? A little hijacking might make this trivial
  118. Jun 14 22:07:54 <OmegaPaladin> I like idea of towing the pylon or more likely fabricating thrusters and pushing it out with fusion torches
  119. Jun 14 22:12:14 <Kerrus> There appear to be some short range skiffs- and, you missed it on your first pass because it was occluded by the pylon's bulk, but there's a Fueglan merchant's barge (gold plated, etc) docked around back. Sensor readings indicate it's just over six thousand years old, and the logs indicate it was captured along with some other ships after- you think- using whisper as some sort of smuggling base. It's likely that
  120. Jun 14 22:12:14 <Kerrus> it's occupants entered the system during a network outtage
  121. Jun 14 22:12:28 <Kerrus> when one or more pylons on the exterior shell were undergoing maintenance
  122. Jun 14 22:12:50 <Kerrus> their reactivation must have proven quite the surprise for whichever poor bastard of a merchant operated the ship
  123. Jun 14 22:13:06 <Kerrus> insofar as they would've been shipped off to 'temporary' containment for the rest of their span
  124. Jun 14 22:13:37 <Kerrus> the ship is lightly armed, mainly with asteroid defense lasers, but well armored. The pylon appears to have been using it to harvest hydrogen from the nearby gas clouds
  125. Jun 14 22:13:53 <Singh> If the ship is still docked - we can use it's engines to push the pylon
  126. Jun 14 22:14:26 <Singh> Kerrus - would Sanatkumara need to do a SCIENCE! Roll to figure out some partial resistance at least?
  127. Jun 14 22:14:58 <Singh> maybe look at shutting down some of those nerve clusters that receive external signals
  128. Jun 14 22:15:01 <Singh> truly going dark basically
  129. Jun 14 22:15:27 <Kerrus> Maybe going to sleep. The field's interface doesn't appear to be a case of 'you recieve external signals and then get infected'
  130. Jun 14 22:15:35 <Kerrus> so much as 'your systems spontaneously develop a virus'
  131. Jun 14 22:15:40 <OmegaPaladin> Would any of the skiffs be able to get to the O'Neil Colony?
  132. Jun 14 22:15:44 <Kerrus> yes
  133. Jun 14 22:15:48 <Kerrus> like it's interfacing directly with their autonomic functions
  134. Jun 14 22:15:54 <Kerrus> there's no 'external receiver' to do with it
  135. Jun 14 22:16:16 <Singh> hmm
  136. Jun 14 22:16:18 <Kerrus> so less 'go to autistic mode' and more 'go to sleep and drift through on thrusters'
  137. Jun 14 22:16:33 <Singh> but then when one wakes up, they'll be effected anyway right?
  138. Jun 14 22:16:46 <Kerrus> If it was still in the field, yes
  139. Jun 14 22:17:01 <Kerrus> The Samsarans vote to just disable the tower via pew pews
  140. Jun 14 22:17:19 <Kerrus> specifically targeted to knock out the generators and shut the entire thing down for study in detail
  141. Jun 14 22:17:26 <Singh> hmm
  142. Jun 14 22:17:57 <Singh> would it be possible to do a force overwriting through advanced regeneration. Like...it's changing the underlying infrastructure, but is it possible to force it to regrow to its original spec repeatedly, thus overwriting the changes?
  143. Jun 14 22:18:04 <OmegaPaladin> Feasibility on pushing the thing further out using the freighter
  144. Jun 14 22:18:31 <Kerrus> I mean the freighter is under the tower's control. If you decoupled all the computery bits you might be able to pull it off
  145. Jun 14 22:18:34 <Kerrus> it's worth a shot
  146. Jun 14 22:19:14 <OmegaPaladin> My thought on the skiffs is that they could be use in evacuating the people off the ONeil Colony
  147. Jun 14 22:19:16 <Singh> All the brothers have Regen (11) for reference
  148. Jun 14 22:19:25 <OmegaPaladin> Is that practical?
  149. Jun 14 22:19:53 <Kerrus> You don't know how many people are on the cylinder- there's a lot who have lived there their entire lives, generations of people
  150. Jun 14 22:20:03 <Kerrus> it's a pretty big cylinder from what the DC team claims
  151. Jun 14 22:20:13 <Singh> is the cylinder under one of the fields too?
  152. Jun 14 22:20:15 <OmegaPaladin> Meanwhile, I'll work on rigging the freighter for its last ride
  153. Jun 14 22:20:19 <Kerrus> yes, it's docked at a tower
  154. Jun 14 22:21:30 <Singh> Hmm. Where is the white triangle now and the wyvern?
  155. Jun 14 22:21:39 <Kerrus> Singh you think it's establishing like, a virtual circuit with the autonomic functions of the ship or biological ship that encounters the field. You could try save state revrting, sure, but there's nothing preventing it from continually adapting. The Buzz AI's estimate that if they had remained in the field for too long, they would have lost control. Especially if the towers were interplexing with each other for added field adaptability
  156. Jun 14 22:21:49 <Kerrus> The Triangle is heading to the tower near the cylinder
  157. Jun 14 22:21:59 <Kerrus> the DC team tentatively labeled it 'lost paradise'
  158. Jun 14 22:22:23 <Singh> hmmmm
  159. Jun 14 22:23:04 <Singh> Well, the only solution seems to be to turn it off, then velan consume it, thus gaining those traits!
  160. Jun 14 22:23:32 <Singh> The Dragon wisdom of "When in doubt, eat it" is always valid
  161. Jun 14 22:23:54 <Kerrus> Yeah, you probably have enough firepower here to blast it
  162. Jun 14 22:24:01 <Kerrus> the Sams have a supercap battlegroup after all
  163. Jun 14 22:24:24 <Singh> well if we cna safely deactivate it that' sbetter than blasting it to bits
  164. Jun 14 22:24:31 <Singh> unless the Samsarans can do like, precision strikes
  165. Jun 14 22:24:43 <Singh> however doing that may illicit a system wide response
  166. Jun 14 22:24:44 <OmegaPaladin> Still going to try to strip down the freighter and push the pylon further out of contact
  167. Jun 14 22:24:47 <Kerrus> they were looking at burining out the lines from the reactors, which appear to be on the 'bottom' of the tower
  168. Jun 14 22:25:00 <Singh> ^ Op's solution is the best atm I think
  169. Jun 14 22:25:25 <Kerrus> Right, it still takes several hours, but you manage to decouple the freighter and rig it to begin pulling the tower out of position
  170. Jun 14 22:26:07 <Kerrus> alarms go off, and a big holographic diagram pops up, showing the tower being moved out of position, and sections of the field going from yellow to red
  171. Jun 14 22:26:53 <Kerrus> and then from red to red outlined black, with warnings about field integrity and error protocols- and then like the stinking smell of death, transmissions begin bombarding you- not from the tower, but from the system interior
  172. Jun 14 22:26:56 <Kerrus> COME TO USSSSS
  173. Jun 14 22:27:02 <Singh_> (Gonna swap to my phone here now)
  174. Jun 14 22:27:11 <Kerrus> ALL YOU DESIIIIREEEEE
  175. Jun 14 22:27:19 <Kerrus> COME TO USS AND BE GRAAANTEDDD ALLL
  176. Jun 14 22:27:24 <Kerrus> PAAAAARTS FEED USSSS
  177. Jun 14 22:27:41 <Kerrus> and variations thereof
  178. Jun 14 22:27:46 * OmegaPaladin hits memetic hazard button
  179. Jun 14 22:27:48 <Kerrus> @Singh it smells like smartmatter
  180. Jun 14 22:28:05 <Kerrus> but old, and rotten
  181. Jun 14 22:28:26 <Kerrus> @OP you slam the memetic hazard button, but the transmissions continue. Does not appear to be a hacking attempt
  182. Jun 14 22:28:29 <Kerrus> it's just audio
  183. Jun 14 22:28:45 <Singh_> All four dragons scream in unison. "Stop the push! Engines reverse!"
  184. Jun 14 22:29:23 <Kerrus> Oh wait, no, there's some video. Pictures of humanoid figures on the bridge of a ship, pictures of humanoid figures at a last supper style dinner table, with some unidentified food being served. The figures are black and unrecognizable, just shapes against a dark background
  185. Jun 14 22:29:37 <Kerrus> zooms in on a figure, a mouth like a red scar against the black
  186. Jun 14 22:29:39 <Kerrus> JOIN US
  187. Jun 14 22:29:45 <Kerrus> EMBRACE ETERNITY WITH US
  188. Jun 14 22:29:49 <Kerrus> COME TO US
  189. Jun 14 22:30:10 <Kerrus> WE SMELL IT ON YOU
  190. Jun 14 22:30:13 <Kerrus> BRING IT TO US
  191. Jun 14 22:30:22 <Kerrus> COME PAAAAAARTTS
  192. Jun 14 22:30:27 * OmegaPaladin kills the thrusters on the freighter
  193. Jun 14 22:31:06 <Kerrus> BRING US THE EGG
  194. Jun 14 22:31:17 <Kerrus> AND BE ANOINTED IN THE BLESSINGS OF THE FATHERS
  195. Jun 14 22:31:22 <Kerrus> COME TO US PAAAAAARTS
  196. Jun 14 22:31:59 <Kerrus> The field remodulates, to account for the tower being out of position, and the messages lessen. They're still getting through- you've punched a hole in the field, and the tower is struggling to compensate
  197. Jun 14 22:32:22 <Kerrus> Near as you can tell they're just audio-video. There's no cyberjacking component, no hacking, nothing memetic
  198. Jun 14 22:32:40 <Kerrus> It's very odd
  199. Jun 14 22:32:45 <Singh_> (Sanaka) 'aldevran. Its smartmatter. But...its old...rotten. We do not know how we can sense it...but it is a terrible thing. The field is to keep it in as much as out.'
  200. Jun 14 22:33:49 <Kerrus> You're pretty sure that whatever this intelligence is, while for sure i t's smartmatter, that it's *not* a Tharngolst intelligence. Not like the Vengeful Spirit, the Revenant of the Marians,
  201. Jun 14 22:34:04 <Kerrus> It's much more like the Harbinger EXCEED fought. Just ancient beyond measure
  202. Jun 14 22:34:21 <Kerrus> and corrupt and bleeding with organic delusions
  203. Jun 14 22:34:38 <Kerrus> like some sort of mind of a dead god
  204. Jun 14 22:35:09 <OmegaPaladin> *Aldevran is shaking his head in disbelief.
  205. Jun 14 22:35:20 <Kerrus> Parsing the messages, one in seven messages is a variation of 'you have it, give it to us, bring us the egg'
  206. Jun 14 22:35:33 <Kerrus> which is not a message the DC forces ever reported encountering
  207. Jun 14 22:35:59 <Singh_> How weak is the hijacking field now?
  208. Jun 14 22:36:25 <Kerrus> You could probably get through it
  209. Jun 14 22:36:34 <Kerrus> that's how the transmissions are getting out
  210. Jun 14 22:37:09 <Kerrus> Oh also, @OP, your guys, comparing field strength data and logs from the DC guys, are pretty sure that the fields are *stronger* than when the DC guys penetrated them
  211. Jun 14 22:37:32 <Kerrus> it looks like they have a dormancy period, but then if a number or density of incursions occur, they go to a higher state of readiness
  212. Jun 14 22:37:43 <Kerrus> if left alone it's likely the fields would weaken over time- but how much time you couldn't say
  213. Jun 14 22:38:00 <Singh_> "Aldevran, we should push the tower back to plug the hole for the moment. With the freighter we have a door now but lets not leave it open."
  214. Jun 14 22:39:55 <Kerrus> "Oh thank Sophia!"- you receive a transmission from a battered *wreck* of a Diamantan cruiser, slowboating an orbit from the outer asteroid belt. Heavy scarring covers the vessel, and it's vectoring poorly- manually?
  215. Jun 14 22:40:07 <Singh_> "Unless you want to talk to whatever rhis thing is."
  216. Jun 14 22:40:12 <Kerrus> It's deep into the field
  217. Jun 14 22:41:11 <Kerrus> decklights flicker dimly, and you get a torso up look at a grizzled, too old for their actual age lieutenant sitting in the captain's seat, swear on her brow, hair long and scraggly, praising Sophia for your arrival and- and requesting aid to get her crew out of there
  218. Jun 14 22:42:23 <Kerrus> they have injured, a lot of crew in cryo-freeze. They've survived by evading the tower's field of control in the asteroid belt, apparently there's a number of asteroids with the right composition to difract the field. But their supplies have run down, and evading constant attacks by the 'raveners'... they're in bad shape
  219. Jun 14 22:43:15 <Kerrus> The samsarans data confirms the crew manifest for this ship
  220. Jun 14 22:43:32 <Kerrus> including the lieutenant in question, one Samantha Rothschilde
  221. Jun 14 22:44:01 <Kerrus> Estimated rate of traversal, she'll make the field breach in four hours
  222. Jun 14 22:45:09 <OmegaPaladin> Captain Morello is calling the Samsaran fleet admiral. "I've dealt with extremely old smart matter before. I took it lightly, and I lost the Buzz Aldrin-C. I do not want to give whatever is in there a chance to escape. We can use various tricks and old-school ships to rescue crew, but let's not break this system unless we know we can fix it.
  223. Jun 14 22:45:28 <OmegaPaladin> err Buzz Aldrin-B
  224. Jun 14 22:45:30 <Kerrus> @Singh the smell of old, rotten smartmatter is overpowering. It's an ill wind, rushing out of the system's interior. A crawling, ravening hunger
  225. Jun 14 22:45:53 <Kerrus> alarms on the pylon continue
  226. Jun 14 22:46:24 <Kerrus> Several skiffs undock from the pylon and begin moving towards the DC cruiser!
  227. Jun 14 22:46:34 <Kerrus> they're powering weapons
  228. Jun 14 22:47:39 <Singh_> The dragons are all agitated, but do not break stealth for the moment. There is nothing to be done unfortunately - unlessthey can enter fast enough to kill the skiffs then duck out
  229. Jun 14 22:47:43 <Kerrus> "-repeat we are under attack- damn these security drone fucks!' the cruiser is firing back with point defense cannister shot, missiles, etc. The skiffs are nimble, and armed with megaparticle beams.
  230. Jun 14 22:48:03 <OmegaPaladin> Is there any sign of the DC cruiser being infected?
  231. Jun 14 22:48:17 <Kerrus> No
  232. Jun 14 22:48:58 <OmegaPaladin> can we hit the skiffs from outside the field?
  233. Jun 14 22:48:59 <Kerrus> It's firing normal weapons, taking very real damage. The video feed you're getting has the acting captain ordering crew to do stuff, and you can see them in the background- crew at damcon stations, crew at tactical. They look like shit.
  234. Jun 14 22:49:02 <Kerrus> yes
  235. Jun 14 22:49:28 <Kerrus> about the only weirdness is that the camera angle is odd, but that could be explained by a collapsed bulkhead or the crew jury rigging a transmitter
  236. Jun 14 22:49:29 <Singh_> The field is now a red opposed to yellow right?
  237. Jun 14 22:49:32 <Kerrus> yes
  238. Jun 14 22:49:37 <Singh_> Esp arohnd the tower?
  239. Jun 14 22:49:47 <Kerrus> I mean the tower itself has it's own field, which is still in place
  240. Jun 14 22:49:57 <Kerrus> but the collective lattice is black outlined with red
  241. Jun 14 22:50:11 <Singh_> Yah but its a single field instead of like nultiple overlapping ones
  242. Jun 14 22:50:15 <Kerrus> indicating a complete field failure for the relevant sections (unless you pushed it back, in which case it's red-yellow)
  243. Jun 14 22:50:18 <Kerrus> yes
  244. Jun 14 22:50:34 <Singh_> The dragons will launch 12 Squadrons of wyverns
  245. Jun 14 22:50:43 <Kerrus> there were four skiffs. The cruisers fields are buckling, but it seems to be holding out- barely
  246. Jun 14 22:50:49 <Singh_> To intercept the skiffs
  247. Jun 14 22:51:07 <Singh_> With ordees to run bbck should tjey smell ssart matter on the dc ship
  248. Jun 14 22:51:24 <Singh_> And to return in case they loose touch for x amount of time
  249. Jun 14 22:51:49 <Kerrus> Riught, Wyverns fly in, blast one skiff. You lose a Wyvern- then another, and then the last skiff goes down. The captain of the DC force hails you, but you're distracted by the transmissions coming from deeper in the system. There's something on the sublevel, something deep and baritone, a great echoing
  250. Jun 14 22:52:15 <Kerrus> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh2-P8hG5-E
  251. Jun 14 22:52:21 <Kerrus> like memory
  252. Jun 14 22:53:07 <Singh_> Sanaka will answer the captain's hail, though is clearly distracred
  253. Jun 14 22:53:48 <Singh_> Sanatkumara will analyse the transmission, studying it as much as possible but being aware of cognitohazarss
  254. Jun 14 22:54:29 <OmegaPaladin> As soon as it will not stop the DC ship, the station is going back in place, see if we could correct the previous misalignment
  255. Jun 14 22:54:41 <Kerrus> "Sophia's thanks be upon you. Please... save us-" the camera jerks, and you lose sight of the captain in an endless tangle of cords running from conduits to consoles, like great veins pulsing with the ship's lifeblood.
  256. Jun 14 22:54:46 <Kerrus> "please.... save us..."
  257. Jun 14 22:55:03 <Kerrus> Dragon #2 picks up on something weird
  258. Jun 14 22:55:08 <Kerrus> don't humanoids usually have... feet?
  259. Jun 14 22:55:49 <Kerrus> replaying the footage from when the camera drops, there's a pan shot of the captain, situated atop the command throne, and all these cables, all these lines feeding power from conduit to console
  260. Jun 14 22:56:08 <Singh_> If any of the wyverns are in contact range, they will be ordered to kill the ship. Sanata replies to the fleet. "Open fire on rhe ship. It is infected."
  261. Jun 14 22:56:29 <Kerrus> a perfect, human torso situated atop a spider-like assembly of cabling. No arms. No legs. Just a torso, a head, eyes pleading
  262. Jun 14 22:56:32 <Singh_> He'll share the data of this to the aldveran
  263. Jun 14 22:56:49 <Kerrus> straining. Skin that appears ill fitting
  264. Jun 14 22:56:57 <Kerrus> "save us.... please...."
  265. Jun 14 22:57:04 <Kerrus> You begin firing
  266. Jun 14 22:57:33 <Kerrus> and the hull of the cruiser ripples with the first impact, a tide of nanotech bleeding away to reveal a mishapen, grotesque skin of bloody red and black
  267. Jun 14 22:58:08 <Kerrus> PARRRTSS DO NOT RESSSISSSST. SAAAAAVE YOOOOURRR KIIIIIND
  268. Jun 14 22:59:09 <Kerrus> "-begging you... save us..." ribbons of red fire cut into the ship, even as it returns fire- virulent yellow rays lancing wyvern after wyvern, smartmatter payload coruscating over their bodies- screams of horror as they're ripped away from your control and turn brother against brother
  269. Jun 14 23:00:14 <Kerrus> The four brothers turn their own weapons against the ship as it approaches, pouring on fire. The Samsarans- jolted to action- begin lobbing long range missiles at it, and the Northpoint team finally gets around to reversing the freighter's thrust and pulling the tower back towards its original position....
  270. Jun 14 23:00:36 * OmegaPaladin launches an alpha strike - AM drones screaming off the launch rails, grasers lashing out with lethal fury
  271. Jun 14 23:01:23 <Kerrus> the field begins strengtheneing, and the infested ship slows, hull glowing molten. The camera jolts, panning back. You see hands, a spider-like body of cabling, as perspective shifts and you realize that the camera is an eye- an eye in a head of a body, another torso next to the captain. Her eyes are pleading with hope
  272. Jun 14 23:01:28 <Singh_> The dragons do not hesitate, initiating remote kill mechanisms in the ones that are not captured - they will not be turned. They move to intercept, covering rhe ship in close quarters with massive amounts of dragon's breath to cauterize every inch of it's surface
  273. Jun 14 23:01:35 <Kerrus> '... save.... us....'
  274. Jun 14 23:02:24 <Kerrus> The cruiser's reactor breaches, a tide of fire washing through the hull. The camera feed shows consoles exploding, alarms going off. The captain smiles, tears of black ichor leaking from her eyes...
  275. Jun 14 23:02:30 <Kerrus> 'thank.... you...'
  276. Jun 14 23:02:33 <Kerrus> and disappears in fire
  277. Jun 14 23:02:35 <OmegaPaladin> "May Sophia grant you new life"
  278. Jun 14 23:03:19 <Kerrus> As the wreck burns, in the distance, at the edge of sensor range, you spot another ship- another DC cruiser
  279. Jun 14 23:03:28 <Kerrus> and then another.... and another... sailing through the dark
  280. Jun 14 23:03:41 <Singh_> The four will not stop firing until all that is left of the ship - and their own wyverns - is ash
  281. Jun 14 23:03:42 <Kerrus> More transmissions- more lost crewmen and women, more lost souls
  282. Jun 14 23:04:20 <Kerrus> and then, mercifully, the pylon arrives back into place. The field... reinitializes, reintegrates- and those ships stall, engines failing. Their transmissions cease- and slowly, t hey turn, moving away and out of sensor range
  283. Jun 14 23:04:39 <Kerrus> before the field can completely come together, one last transmission
  284. Jun 14 23:04:44 <Kerrus> PAAAAARTSSS DO NOT LEAVE USSSSSS
  285. Jun 14 23:04:56 <Kerrus> GIVE US THE EGG AND WE WILL GIVE YOU OUR EVERYTHING
  286. Jun 14 23:05:01 <Kerrus> GIVE US WHAT IS OURS
  287. Jun 14 23:05:05 <Kerrus> YOU HAVE IT
  288. Jun 14 23:05:12 <Kerrus> GIVE IT TO US ASSSS PROOOOMISSSSSED
  289. Jun 14 23:05:17 <Kerrus> and then
  290. Jun 14 23:05:18 <Kerrus> nothing
  291. Jun 14 23:05:34 <Kerrus> The kumara brothers are gonna have nightmares about this for a while
  292. Jun 14 23:05:42 <Kerrus> they're pretty sure it was talking to them
  293. Jun 14 23:06:06 <Kerrus> there's only one egg they know of that could *possibly* be what this entity is talking about
  294. Jun 14 23:06:11 <Kerrus> the one that bore their father
  295. Jun 14 23:06:16 <Kerrus> :3
  296. Jun 14 23:06:32 <Singh_> "What the hell is this egg?" The dragons hiss in irritation and fear as they orbit the cauterized remains.
  297. Jun 14 23:06:45 <Singh_> Wait it was not talking to the others?Only to them?
  298. Jun 14 23:06:57 <Kerrus> it was a wide area broadcast
  299. Jun 14 23:07:17 <Kerrus> but the dragons think it was referring to the egg from which Brahma figuratively hatched
  300. Jun 14 23:07:32 <Singh_> Ah. Interesting. Wait...
  301. Jun 14 23:07:35 <Kerrus> 'egg' doesn't show up a lot in modern terminology
  302. Jun 14 23:07:41 <Kerrus> it's a pretty unique turn of phrase
  303. Jun 14 23:07:48 <OmegaPaladin> Amelie: "So you met your first eldritch nightmare. Welcome to the club." She smiles sardonically.
  304. Jun 14 23:07:51 <Singh_> This entity is organic-ish smart matter?
  305. Jun 14 23:08:35 <Singh_> "This is an experience we'd rather avoid again thank you."
  306. Jun 14 23:08:41 <Kerrus> it very well could be
  307. Jun 14 23:09:07 <Kerrus> I said before it seemed like some sort of mind of a dead god... or perhaps just a mind of the dead
  308. Jun 14 23:09:14 <Kerrus> a gravemind, if you will
  309. Jun 14 23:09:42 <Singh_> "I dont know what egg this thing refers to, butwe only know two: The dragon womb and that of the giant smartmatter moon that got blown up recently. Do you know of any others?"
  310. Jun 14 23:09:48 <Kerrus> S:3
  311. Jun 14 23:09:56 <OmegaPaladin> THIS IS NOT YOUR GRAVE, BUT YOU ARE WELCOME IN IT
  312. Jun 14 23:11:12 <OmegaPaladin> *Aldevran, Amelie, and the rest of the Buzz Aldrin crew are currently talking with Samsara in case that little demonstration was not scary enough
  313. Jun 14 23:11:16 <Kerrus> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7w0qqTvXC-w
  314. Jun 14 23:12:20 <OmegaPaladin> Plan of attack for the next phase - ATOMIC ROCKETS TO THE RESCUE!
  315. Jun 14 23:13:39 <Singh_> Sanatkumara will use the lab module to stidy what he can of the dc cruiser's wreck.
  316. Jun 14 23:13:58 <Singh_> Figure out wht this smart matter is so weird...yet familiar it seems
  317. Jun 14 23:14:45 <OmegaPaladin> literally ferry people off the colony with old-fashioned 21st century tech to a waiting base
  318. Jun 14 23:16:59 <Kerrus> Peeling open the remains of the ship and there's not much smartmatter on it at all
  319. Jun 14 23:17:04 <Kerrus> it had a stealth shell
  320. Jun 14 23:17:20 <Kerrus> but the interior is all biochips, technoorganic circuitry
  321. Jun 14 23:17:25 <Kerrus> a glittering infinity, etc
  322. Jun 14 23:17:49 <Kerrus> the remains of the bridge remind you more of a... a genejack factory than a smartmatter one
  323. Jun 14 23:18:01 <Singh_> If its all organic...the brothers will consume some of it in order to better understand it's components, its origins
  324. Jun 14 23:18:13 <Kerrus> part and parcel of bodies stapled onto cyberdrones
  325. Jun 14 23:18:21 <Kerrus> as... lures
  326. Jun 14 23:18:26 <Kerrus> you're gonna eat it? Righto
  327. Jun 14 23:20:39 <Kerrus> first two dragons start tearing into it. It's gross, stomach churning gruel. Dragon #3's stomach is so turned he breaks out in hives- a scattering of spontaneous mutations ejecting reaction mass and suffers some kind of allergic reaction as his biology struggles to overcome the basically pure poison he just ingested
  328. Jun 14 23:20:52 <Kerrus> And the last of the brothers is...
  329. Jun 14 23:20:53 <Kerrus> fine
  330. Jun 14 23:21:24 <Kerrus> it's horrible tasting, sure, but he's learning so much
  331. Jun 14 23:21:32 <Kerrus> they all are, but especially the last one.
  332. Jun 14 23:21:57 <Kerrus> There's definitely a biological component to what this smartmatter is using. Very minor amounts of actual regular smartmatter
  333. Jun 14 23:21:58 <Masakari> you could say, he's being granted eyes
  334. Jun 14 23:22:17 <Kerrus> but the biological component is nothing like phagebeasts
  335. Jun 14 23:22:59 <Kerrus> yes, there's a lot y ou could do with this sort of thing. It's... not s omething that can be communicated with words, but a deeper way of communicating. A better way.
  336. Jun 14 23:24:16 <Kerrus> Sanatkumara's eyes gleam as he inhales this system's scent. It remains putrid, laden with rot and chaos- and yet.... there's something else there... something familiar
  337. Jun 14 23:24:30 <Kerrus> the smell of new life, so familiar, so l ike the Dragon Womb
  338. Jun 14 23:24:53 <Kerrus> it isn't rotting at all
  339. Jun 14 23:25:03 <Kerrus> it's just transitioning- from one form... to another
  340. Jun 14 23:25:59 <Kerrus> life doesn't end with death, after all, but the form in which it continues may not be familiar. Those teachings are so very familiar to the brothers, to their father. The Samsarans know well of them- that the great wheel ever turns, taking those upon it closer to enlightenment
  341. Jun 14 23:26:39 <Singh_> Sanatkumara unfurls from rhe wreck, away from his wretching brother. To the fleet he states simply now. "I understand what is going on here. I think. The important question to ask now is simple: Do you trust me?" He addresses this to the aldrin crew.
  342. Jun 14 23:28:13 <OmegaPaladin> "You just ate a smart matter infected ship filled with human remains."
  343. Jun 14 23:29:13 <Singh_> "And it has given wisdom unlike any other. I am not turned like my brothers..but something vvey similar happened here like it did on Shiva."
  344. Jun 14 23:30:59 <OmegaPaladin> "Deconstruct ordnance twisting organic life into a living nightmare? Sounds like Shiva."
  345. Jun 14 23:33:55 <Singh_> "Something that went very wrong - but yet...can still go right. The wheel was turning here. But the OPF put a spoke in it. The egg..its not us. It cannot be." The other three brothers look on watching this. They do not seem to be too comfortable
  346. Jun 14 23:34:29 <OmegaPaladin> "I also did not recall your father wanting to consume and assimilate humans."
  347. Jun 14 23:36:47 <Kerrus> as a point of order, the bodies were mostly washed away by plasma fire
  348. Jun 14 23:36:59 <Kerrus> not much in the way of *human* remains by the time it got eaten
  349. Jun 14 23:37:04 <Kerrus> though the sentiment remains apt
  350. Jun 14 23:37:43 <OmegaPaladin> "Perhaps it could have been different. Perhaps it could have been a new being. It is not seeking enlightenment, only consumption."
  351. Jun 14 23:38:13 <Singh_> "There was nothing left but burnt ash and barely anything organic." Sanatkumara counners. "I think it may be worth...just asking it.,
  352. Jun 14 23:39:08 <Singh_> "It is intelligent. It cannot be reasoned with...but at the same time, maybe it can be decieved."
  353. Jun 14 23:42:18 <Kerrus> Anyways, I'm gonna end the mechanics part of the sim there- you guys can feel free to RP your stuff, but I'd want Esarey to be around before I do the next phase
  354. Jun 14 23:42:28 <Kerrus> and this seems like a good point, with lots of stuff to write about
  355. Jun 14 23:43:13 <OmegaPaladin> "Dragons are also capable of being deceived. Smart matter entities can be quite clever. When the Revenant promised humans immortality, it left out that it was a place on the Red Spiral
  356. Jun 14 23:44:40 <Singh_> "This is true." The dragon considers. "But i think there is something here. Perhaps something worth looking at is finding this... egg first. That way we have something of leverage maybe."
  357. Jun 14 23:44:49 <OmegaPaladin> (Cool - I may not get too much written due to other demands)
  358. Jun 14 23:45:30 * Masakari (Masakari@sorcery-rad.iks.23.70.IP) has left ("Leaving")
  359. Jun 14 23:45:58 <Singh_> I'll write up a fair but soon
  360. Jun 14 23:46:42 * OmegaPaladin will gently suggest to the other brothers that Sanatkumara might not be himself.
  361. Jun 14 23:47:02 <OmegaPaladin> cool, I'll send Esarey a log
  362. Jun 14 23:47:40 <Singh_> The other brothers notably seem to acknowledge this, but area bit ill from dragon school of learning (Ie eat it)
  363. Jun 14 23:48:10 <Singh_> And will investigate further once they recover
