  110. *A. Why is this FAQ?

  113. Well, first it started as a simple guide for the special stages in
  114. Sonic & Knuckles. Later I added a few things in, and decided it would
  115. be a nice thing to include the Giant Ring Locations as well. However,
  116. Warrior of Zarona wrote an FAQ out of that by the time. So I decided to
  117. ask for his permission to use his FAQ, and write a big guide about all
  118. the Giant Ring Locations and Special Stages in Sonic & Knuckles.
  119.  
  120. I also asked Janus Operative to use his S3 Giant Ring FAQ, because the
  121. ultimate goal of this guide will be to cover all of the Special Stages
  122. and Giant Rings in Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.

  132. *C. The Chaos and Super Emeralds
  133. ===================================
  134.  
  135. Well, the Chaos Emeralds are special treasures in this game.
  136. They can be found inside the Special Stages. To get in a Special Stage,
  137. you mut find some of the Giant Rings.
  138. If can get all 7 Chaos Emeralds, then the end of the game will change,
  139. and your character can change into his Super form.
  140. To do this, you must collect 50 rings, perform a jump, and press jump
  141. again in the air.
  142. note: Giant rings will award you 50 rings
  143. if you have all of the emeralds.
  144.  
  145. However, if you plug in Sonic 3 into S&K, then things will change a
  146. little.
  147. There will be 2 new rings in Mushroom Hill.
  148. You can get Chaos Emeralds in the Special Stages of Sonic 3.
  149. When you have all of the Chaos Emeralds, then Sonic and Knuckles
  150. can change into their Super forms. (Tails can't.)
  151. From the first zone of S&K (Mushroom Hill), if you have all of the
  152. Chaos Emeralds, then the Giant Rings will turn into rainbow colored
  153. flashing Super Rings.
  154. Touch one of these, and you will find yourself in the Hidden Palace.
  155. When you first enter the Palace, you will lose all of your
  156. Chaos Emeralds, they will turn into Super Emeralds.
  157. You can't turn into your Super form from now on.
  158. Jump on one of the Super Emeralds to start one of the
  159. Special Stages of S&K.
  160. If you win the Special Stage, then you will be awarded with the Super
  161. Emerald you step onto.
  162. After the Special Stage, you will be returned to the location
  163. where you found the Super Ring.
  164.  
  165. If you can get all of the Super Emeralds,
  166. then Sonic and Knuckles can turn into their Hyper forms,
  167. and Tails can change into his Super form. (same way as shown above)
  168.  
  169. With all of the Super Emeralds,
  170. you can see the true ending of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

  192. - When he runs at max speed, he will fly instead of running
  193. (You can't lift off during the game though)

  195. Hyper Sonic
  196. ---------------

  199. - Appearance:
  200. - Same as Super Sonic, except he's not leaving stars behind
  201. himself at max speed.
  202. - His spikes have all the colors of the Chaos/Super Emeralds.
  203. - His spikes are flashing.

  205. - He leaves 2 after-images of himself.

  207. - same as Super Sonic
  208. - Can breathe underwater
  209. - The Sonic Boom:
  210. it will kill all enemies in the screen,
  211. and blast you out in a direction.

  234. - Can breathe underwater
  235. - The Earthquake Glide:
  236. glide into a wall from a little distance,
  237. and an earthquake will destroy all badniks
  238. on the screen.

  240. Super Tails
  241. ---------------
  242. - Prerequisite:
  243. - 7 Super Emeralds
  244. - Appearance:
  245. - like regular Tails, slowly flashing to gold.
  246. - When he runs at max speed, he leaves a star behind him.
  247. - Abilities:
  248. - Invincible
  249. - Faster running and Flying.
  250. - Super Tails has 4 super powered gold Flickeys following him.
  251. These birds are invincible, and they will attack all
  252. badniks on the screen, even bosses!

  254. note: There is NO TURBO TAILS. There never was any, and never be.
  255. Also, there is no Hyper Tails either.

  258. *D. Giant Ring Locations
  259. ===========================

  262. Debug Mode
  263. --------------
  264. To access Debug mode, you have to lock-on the
  265. Sonic the hedgehog 3 Cartridge into S&K
  266.  
  267. Go to Angel Island (with any character)
  268. and find one of those swinging vines.
  269. Grab onto them and press left 3 times,
  270. right 3 times, and up 3 times.
  271. You should hear a rings sound.
  272.  
  273. Press Start to pause the game, and press button A.
  274. (or just press the Reset button if you have a real Genesis. Resetting
  275. an emulator will not work because it will completely reload the ROM,
  276. not just goes back to the main menu)
  277. You will go back into the main menu.
  278. Now there will be a new option, called Sound Test. Choose it.
  279.  
  280. Choose Mushroom Hill, (with any character) and find
  281. one of the pulley machines. Hang onto them,
  282. and press left 3 times, right 3 times, and up 3 times.
  283. You should hear the ring sound again.
  284.  
  285. note: If you input the code in only one of the levels,
  286. then you can only access the Sound Test, and these
  287. key combinations:
  288. Pause the game and press Button A : Reset the game
  289. Pause the game and press and hold Button B :
  290. Slow-motion. While you are in Slow-mo, your
  291. time will NOT increase. But your rings will
  292. still decrease as Super Sonic.
  293. Pause the game and press Button C : advance frame
  294. this is only useful for creating Screenshots
  295. or to view the Sprite Scroll (see below)
  296.  
  297. For Debug mode, you need to input the code on both
  298. Angel Island and Mushroom Hill.

  300. Go back to the Sound Test (Start, then A) highlight
  301. the level you want to play, hold down button A,
  302. and press Start.
  303.  
  304. Now you can use Debug mode:
  305. Press button A to reverse the gravity (like in Death Egg zone)
  306. Press button B to activate Debug mode.
  307. while you are in the Debug, press C to change items
  308. and press A to place them.
  309. Press button B again to deactivate Debug mode.
  310. Press button C to jump.
  311. And hold C and press B for the Sprite Scroll.
  312. You can see all of your characters animations.
  313. Sprite Scroll is only useful with the Slow-motion
  314. or Advance Frame tricks. See above.
  315. Press B again to exit the Sprite Scroll.
  316.  
  317. While you are in Debug mode, you will notice that your Score
  318. will be replaced with coordinates. These are the coordinates
  319. that I wrote down for every Giant Ring.
  320.  
  321. The first row of coordinates represent an the objects position,
  322. the second row represents the cameras position
  323. That's why I only wrote down the first row.
  324. If you search for the rings in Debug Mode, you will
  325. know where to look for them in the normal game.

  330. This part is under process. I found 77 Giant Rings with Debug,
  331. (42 in Sonic 3 and 35 in Sonic & Knuckles) and it will take some
  332. time to write down how to get all of them.

  342. - First Ring, Location : 1bc804c0

  345. The first ring is simple to find. At the top of the first hill you
  346. come to, where a mean rhino-like bot storms up and down and two set
  347. of imposing spikes stand, there is a platform that collapses as you
  348. walk over it. Just drop down, turn around, and spin into the grey
  349. rock that blocks the entrance to the chamber with the ring. Easy!
  350.  
  351. - Second Ring, Location : 024003d0
  352. Accessible with all characters
  353.  
  354. The second ring is slightly less easy to locate, but it's pretty
  355. straight-forward once you realise where it actually is. After the
  356. flame-oh-bot (can you tell that I'm making up names!) comes down
  357. and turns the environment into a fire hazard, proceed to your right
  358. until you reach a set of springs (two facing up, two facing down).
  359. Now, instead of choosing the springy route, drop down off the
  360. platform you are on and, like with the first ring, turn around
  361. and spin into the rock that blocks the ring room. Only this ring
  362. chamber is a little taller (as it puts you back to the position you
  363. where in after you watched the flame-oh-bot desecrate the
  364. landscape. Just bounce on the spring and you'll fly into the ring!
  365.

  367. Angel Island Act 2
  368. ----------------------

  371. - First Ring, Location : 19b80450
  372. Accessible with Sonic or Tails only
  373.  
  374. I'm not sure if things can get much easier. The game practically
  375. forces you to enter the first special stage by throwing you down
  376. a tunnel, across the weak platforms and into the ring room.
  377.  
  378. - Second Ring, Location : 36b805d0
  379. Accessible with Sonic or Tails only
  380.  
  381. Towards the end of act 2 (after the spike traps with the extra
  382. life), there's a large U-shaped bend that is filled with water.
  383. Going over this feature are some disappearing platforms that take
  384. you further into the level (or, more precisely, onto a platform
  385. that'll break if you hang about for too long). Instead of going
  386. higher, you want to drop down into the U-bend and spin up and down
  387. the sides. Eventually you'll gain enough height to be able to roll
  388. into the ring chamber on the right side of the U-bend.
  389.

  391. Hidrocity Act 1
  392. -------------------

  395. - First Ring, Location : 144005c0
  396. Accessible with all characters
  397.  
  398. The first giant ring can be tricky to locate and find, as you only
  399. have one shot at it. There's a section in the level where, after
  400. using a lengthy sequence of conveyer belts and fans, you reach a
  401. high-up slope that propels you into a loop-the-loop and, in turn, a
  402. short tunnel that takes you up a very tall wall. (There's one of
  403. those extra-speed-hand thingys in case you don't have enough speed
  404. from the lope-the-loop.) At the top of this wall, you'll see one of
  405. those rail-track-like platforms leading off. Stand on the very
  406. first bit of this platform and it'll break, sending you downwards.
  407. Now you need to push left to get as close to the wall on the left
  408. as possible, and with a bit of luck you'll land just on the edge of
  409. the entrance to the ring room that is situated halfway up the wall
  410. on your left as you fall down from the collapsing platform.
  411. With Knuckles, just climb up if you miss it. With Tails, fly.
  412.  
  413. - Second Ring, Location : 314004b8
  414. Accessible with all characters

  416. Right near the end on the act, before the final star post, there is
  417. a place where two rail-track platforms (as I vaguely refer to them
  418. as) converge. At the base of the lower rail-track platform,
  419. there's a ring room built into the nearby wall (it's on the left as
  420. you come down the rail-rack). It's relatively easy to locate this
  421. last ring, since it's on the same height as the ground, and
  422. sometimes you'll even find it by accident (if you spin dash after
  423. you come up out of the underwater section where fans propel you up
  424. to the surface, you fly straight into the room).

  427. Hidrocity Act 2

  431. - First Ring, Location : 26c00640
  432. Accessible with all characters
  433.  
  434. There's a point about half-way through this act, when you fly down
  435. a water slide (well, they look like water slides!) and at the
  436. bottom is a speed boost hand-out-of-the-ground machine. Use this
  437. speed boost to spin up the wall next to you, then land on the
  438. moving grey-coloured block that should be directly above you. Wait
  439. until the grey block gets close to the left wall, and once it does,
  440. jump off at the left wall. Hopefully, you'll land in the entrance
  441. to the first giant ring!
  442.  
  443. - Second Ring, Location : 37c004c0
  444. Accessible with all characters
  445.  
  446. The next ring is slightly harder to get. Near the end of level,
  447. you're thrown through a loop-the-loop and down a spiralling water
  448. slide. The speed you gain from this slide forces you to spin up
  449. high between two close together walls. One you're at this height,
  450. you need to land on the spinning blue columns that move up and
  451. down next to both ides of the wall. Once you're on the column that
  452. goes up the right-hand wall, wait until it is as high as
  453. possible, then jump up and into the entrance to the ring room
  454. (situated just above the column, but it's easy to see the opening).

  457. Marble Garden Act 1
  458. -----------------------

  461. - First Ring, Location : 06c0093c
  462. Accessible with all characters
  463.  
  464. Early on in the level (If you take the upper route) you encounter
  465. the drill-machine mini-boss and then a section with two of those
  466. pulverising spiked machines. (You will get to this place from the
  467. fourth ring too) Proceed past this slope and then spin dash your
  468. way up the very steep slope you come across. Now use the vertically
  469. moving platforms to make your way up the level and you should see a
  470. flame shield monitor on your right. Get this shield and jump back
  471. onto the platforms. Once you're at the highest these platforms go,
  472. jump onto one of the three small ledges that are twirling on an
  473. axis. Once you're at the highest point these ledges reach leap off
  474. to the left and execute the shield's ability. With a little luck
  475. you'll have flamed yourself into the ring chamber (it's easier to
  476. get this ring with the other characters, as you might have imagined.
  477.  
  478. - Second Ring, Location : 0d4007bc
  479. Accessible with all characters
  480.  
  481. Instead of jumping back on the twirling platforms when you get to
  482. the ledge with the fire shield, go right. You should move past two
  483. balloon-spikes (!) and see yet another set of twirling platforms
  484. (I twirl, you twirl, the whole world twirls), and at the top of
  485. these platforms is a ledge that leads to the giant ring. Through
  486. hours of painstaking research I've discovered that these platforms
  487. can't be reliably reached with Sonic (unless you spend hours trying
  488. to get that blue twister thingy to move properly). Tails is your
  489. best bet for this ring, then.
  490.  
  491. - Third Ring, Location : 0ec00cbc
  492. Accessible with all characters
  493.  
  494. There are two ways to get this ring:
  495. First way is to fall down from the room where the fourth ring was.
  496. You will be in a wide tunnel with lots of rings, one Ring TV, and
  497. a lightning shield. Go to the left to exit from this tunnel. You
  498. will fall into a 3 sided moving platform. To the right, there will
  499. be some spikes, and an invincibility TV on a cliff.
  500. The spike is really a badnik, so stand to the side of the cliff,
  501. and spindash it! You will destroy the badnik, hit the TV, and
  502. brake into the secret room where the Giant Ring is.
  503.  
  504. The second way: At the start of the level, at the middle of the
  505. slides, there will be a yellow spring shooting you diagonally up
  506. to the right. You'll have to stand on a 3 sided moving platform,
  507. otherwise you will continue falling down. If you managed to stand
  508. on it, go to the right till you can, and eventually you will find
  509. the cliff described above.
  510.  
  511. - Fourth Ring, Location : 0fc00a3c
  512. Accessible with all characters
  513.  
  514. At one point in this stage you reach slope with a ball and chain
  515. swinging vertically over it. Proceed past this section, down
  516. another slope and over a platform with three sets of spikes. Now
  517. jump over the gap that separates the platform you're on from
  518. another one to your left and carry on going until you reach a fast-
  519. sneakers power-up. Smash this monitor, then spin dash into the
  520. plain column in the wall on your left. It should break, letting
  521. you enter the ring room.

  523. - Fifth Ring, Location : 1540023c
  524. Accessible with all characters
  525.  
  526. You must take the below route for this one, at the beginning when
  527. you are falling down, you have to fall as deep as you can.
  528.  
  529. At one point in this expansive level you reach an area with one of
  530. those blue circles embedded in the ground. Spindash again it and a
  531. column will rise in front of you. This column enables you to easily
  532. reach a platform that is moving horizontally over a section of
  533. spikes (a balloon-spike enemy is around here). Continue on using the
  534. platforms to ascend to the top of the steep hill. Then proceed down
  535. the other side of the hill and spin into the column to knock a
  536. section out so you can continue your descent. You should see a blue
  537. spinning top. Instead of using this drop off the ledge and you'll
  538. fall into that sticky, sinking mud.
  539. To your left will be the ring chamber.
  540.  
  541. - Sixth Ring, Location : 18c0093c
  542. Accessible with all characters
  543.  
  544. There's a section in this level where you travel along a ledge
  545. heading right, then reach an opening with a flame shield monitor and
  546. three platforms twirling on an axis, before heading back on yourself
  547. via a higher platform that travels left. At the end of this platform
  548. you come across a blue spinning top and an arrow that points
  549. upwards. Jump on the spinning top, keep pressing left and you should
  550. find yourself moving upwards against the left wall. Once you reach
  551. the top you'll move through the wall and into the room with the
  552. giant ring.
  553.  
  554. - Seventh Ring, Location : 1ac004bc
  555. Accessable with all characters
  556.  
  557. This one is right after Ring #5
  558. When you encounter one of those long blue poles that spin you
  559. around, after you roll down a steep hill, try to exit the pole to
  560. the left (from the player's point of view) by jumping off just as
  561. Sonic twirls around to that side. Now proceed on up a small hill
  562. (with two balloon-spikes nearby) and let the red spring you come
  563. across push you up the quarter-pipe style slope to your left. At the
  564. top of the jump (propelled by the spring's power) move right and
  565. aim to land on the spikes sticking out of the ledge on the right.
  566. Then simply walk into the ring chamber!
  567.  
  568. - Eighth Ring, Location : 2540023c
  569. Accessible with all characters
  570.  
  571. After you spin through a room with three ring monitors (after
  572. smashing a column with a huge spiked ball on a chain hanging over
  573. it) you'll come to one of those ancient faces that spit arrows out
  574. at you. Hit its red spot (the third eye?!) and the platform will
  575. break under your feet. Now head left and you'll reach a row of
  576. spikes with a platform moving horizontally over them (and a sign
  577. pointing down at the end of the spikes). Leap onto one of the three
  578. platforms spinning on an axis at the end of this ledge (over a steep
  579. slope downwards) and then when they get near the top left hand
  580. corner jump off to the left and you should land in the ring room.

  583. Marble Garden Act 2

  587. - First Ring, Location : 084004c0
  588. Accessible with Tails only
  589.  
  590. After you go through the 2 pull up things in the beginning of the
  591. stage, you will encounter a place with two arrows, one pointing up,
  592. the other pointing right, fly up and to the left. Then fly up past
  593. the thing with the ball and chain. When you reach the ledge of the
  594. floor, fly up, right a little, then left to the pull up thing. From
  595. there on, go straight until you reach the loop that will make you
  596. run down on the left and right sides of the ramp. When you are on
  597. the left side, jump and head left. You will then see a little

  606. the route below. Get on the flying plate thing and go through the
  607. floor that only the plate can break. Keep going until you see a
  608. little platform flying up and down. Jump down to the floor instead
  609. of the platform, and go through the falling spikes and through the
  610. wall and collect your second ring.

  615. Keep going through the stage until you reach a slope with a yellow
  616. spring throwing you diagonally backwards. jump over it, and proceed
  617. to the right, you'll find a flying automatic plate after one of the

  619. spring and throws you up onto a ground with a wall only the the
  620. plate can destroy. When you are in the hallway, jump off and head to
  621. your left. Go past the platform that breaks when you step on it, and
  622. into the secret room in the left wall to collect the last ring in
  623. this level.

  625. take Sonics route, it's described in the Second Rings location how
  626. to do so.

  636. This one can be accessed by different ways with different
  637. characters. With Tails, from the beginning of the level, use the
  638. 5 balloons in a row to reach a platform with 3 ring bonus TVs on it,
  639. and a spinning black wheel. Use the wheel to jump up to the left.
  640. After some jumping through the white/red cylinders, you will
  641. eventually find yourself in a corner with a lightning shield TV, and
  642. some spikes around. Fly up, avoiding the spikes in the wall.
  643. You will reach a room with some rings above some spikes. jump over
  644. the spikes, and you will find a secret room with the Giant Ring.
  645.  
  646. With Sonic, after the second vacuum tube (or first, depends on the
  647. route you take) you will end up in a strange shaped room, it's like
  648. the downer half of the letter S. The room has 10 rings right above
  649. the vacuum tube. Go to the left to find a spinning black wheel,
  650. and a "jelly platform". To the left there is the secret room with
  651. the Giant Ring.

  653. - Second Ring, Location : 0dc00848

  656. After 2 moving spikes (one coming out of the ground, one coming
  657. out of the ceiling) there will be a swirling red/white pole.
  658. After you went down on that, turn back and go to the beginning of
  659. the pole. Charge a Spindash to the maximum, and go up on the pole.
  660. If you are lucky, you can jump to the moving cylinder from the
  661. other side of the pole. From there, go left, and there is a secret
  662. room with the Giant Ring behind the yellow wall.

  664. - Third Ring, Location : 1b4003cc
  665. Accessible with Sonic and Tails only

  667. Two ways to get this one:
  668. After the first vacuum tube, (you may miss it if you're taking
  669. an other route) there's an ORANGE speed-up wall to the right, and
  670. a spinning black wheel above. If you can jump on the black wheel,
  671. then you can launch yourself to the upper right tunnel. To the
  672. right, there is a secret wall with the ring.
  673.  
  674. If you miss this one, don't worry. After the first orange spinning
  675. tube, if you get out of it on the left side, there will be an
  676. invincibility power up, a spring, and a badnik. To the right from
  677. that area there are special springs on the ceiling and on the
  678. floor, shooting you to the right. After that run to the right,
  679. and there will be a J shaped wall where you will run up, with a
  680. closing door at the end of it, and a yellow spring launching to
  681. the right. After that you will find some of those things that
  682. will make you float (the middle one is moving). Below there is a
  683. lamppost (or checkpoint) and a hole to the right. Fall down on
  684. the hole and push to the right, to go into the hidden chamber
  685. with the Giant Ring. If the spinning orange tube shoots you out
  686. to the right side, then just go right, jumping through the
  687. cylinders and balloons, and stay close to the downer part of
  688. that area. Eventually you will reach the place.

  690. - Fourth Ring, Location : 23c00248

  693. After Ring #3, go back to the things that will make you float.
  694. Jump to the middle one, and you can get past them to the upper
  695. side. After some running, there will be another spinning orange
  696. tube. AVOID the orange tube and carry on past it, you fly into
  697. one of those long white columns that twirl you around. Jump from
  698. the first spinning column to the second spinning column (it'll be
  699. on the right of the first column). Then, jump into the gap in the
  700. right-hand wall and you'll be in the ring chamber.

  705. After Ring #4, when you fall down from the ring chamber you should
  706. land on a red/white cylinder. Jump to the hole below the cylinder.
  707. go to the right, and after some obstacles you will find 3 of those
  708. white twirling columns. Go to the highest point you can, and jump
  709. to the right. There will be a moving spike, and a water shield.
  710. Behind the water shield there is the secret room with the Ring.

  712. You can find this place if you don't avoid the spinning orange tube
  713. before the fourth Giant Ring.

  729. Again, there are two ways to get this ring. You can jump off the
  730. swirling red and white pole onto the platform just above it at jut
  731. the right time, but this is near impossible so I don't know why I'm

  735. The best way is to use the jelly platform to reach
  736. the platform, near the start of the level, with a cannon on it.
  737. Instead of using the cannon, though, jump into the secret passage
  738. built into the wall to the left of the cannon. Smash the power-up
  739. monitors here and fall down through the gap. But make sure to move
  740. very close to the left side so you land on the ledge by the side of
  741. the ring chamber, otherwise you'll fall straight through the ring
  742. room and back to the bottom of the swirling red and white pole!

  747. After the Third Ring, and some running (not much though), you will
  748. be sucked up by a vacuum tube. to the left there will be a red/white
  749. cylinder moving up and down. Wait until it moves up, then enter the
  750. secret room behind the yellow wall to the left

  755. About half way through the level, you come to a corridor with three
  756. expl-oh-do bots (silvery electric things)(one on the ground, one on
  757. the ceiling, and another in the ground). Near the corridor is a
  758. spinning red column. Use this column to reach the platform above
  759. it, with the fire and ten-ring power-up (push up when the column
  760. moves up and down when it moves down to get it to move higher).
  761. Then jump off this platform and into the gap on the left wall and
  762. you'll be in the ring chamber.

  767. Near the end of this level you'll fly up a vacuum tube and arrive
  768. in an area with those spinning, 'tinging' bouncy circles and a load
  769. of strategically placed balloons. You need to use these balloons
  770. to bounce yourself up the narrow gap (use the speed from the vacuum
  771. tube to reach the first one) and then you will be able to enter the
  772. ring room at the very top of the right wall.

  777. Almost at the end of the stage, after two red/white cylinders and a
  778. cannon white a spike trap on the wall, (you have to aim with the
  779. cannon, or you will hit the spike on the wall) there will be some
  780. running through the stage. After you run through a wall, pay
  781. attention. You will hit a lot of "speed-up walls". Try to slow down,
  782. because after this you will fall to a place with 3 TVs and no way
  783. back, if you run too fast. Before running through this wall, try to
  784. glide up on the upper route. If you managed to do it, just run to
  785. the right. You will pass three bats, then some "speed-up walls".
  786. Run to the right, and eventually you will fall to the secret room.
  787. Just press and hold to the right, because you can fall through this
  788. room easily.

  806. The next ring is harder to get. It's located on the never-ending
  807. slope, just after the slope with the big ice barrier that you need
  808. to break through on the right. You should be able to see the small

  810. going past it until you see it. Anyway, you need to jump just as
  811. you get onto the correct slope, and hopefully you'll fly into the
  812. ring room. But you do have an infinite number of chances to get it
  813. right, as the sequence continually loops!

  823. After the first loop-de-loop where you have to dig inside the ground
  824. you will land on an iceberg. Fall on the left side, you will find
  825. a secret room in the wall. To get back from there, fall down, there
  826. will be a spring right next to the wall.

  831. About half way through the level there's a loop-the-loop that sends
  832. you flying through a tunnel which, in turn, sends you flying
  833. through two more loops. Finally, you'll end up on a platform with
  834. an ice-oh-chuck enemy. Proceed along this route until you reach a
  835. platform with ro-boh-penguins on. Next to this platform is a small
  836. iceberg type ledge that moves down when pressure is applied to it.
  837. Simply jump on it and wait until it goes underwater, then jump off
  838. into the right-hand wall and you'll find the big ring room. To get
  839. back up to the surface after you've won (or lost) an emerald, fall
  840. straight down the side of the wall and you should land on a red
  841. spring that'll send you high above the water.

  847. spin round a series of loop-the-loops you'll race up a small ramp

  868. On coming out of one of those Tardis-like tube (you're a fool if
  869. you've never heard of the Tardis; I think of it every time I play
  870. this level, bizarrely!) proceed into the speed boost thing on the
  871. ground. (There's a frog sitting on a red frame above this speed
  872. booster if you're not sure where I mean.) You should race right into
  873. a spinning machine that'll take you to a high ledge. Instead of
  874. jumping right here (like you're meant to), jump left and you'll
  875. land on a narrow ledge. This is the entrance to the ring room.

  885. final giant ring for this act.

  908. left wall. You should land in the entrance to the ring room.

  926. middle of these ugly grey cylinders on the platform near the right
  927. wall. From here you'll see the nest ring chamber.

  963. machine. Take it up to the next level and continue forth, making
  964. sure that the following loop launches you across and that you do

  967. Continue on until you reach the rope swing. Make sure you launch
  968. yourself across and onto the high land. Finally, move on forward
  969. until you reach the vine that stretches out so that you can walk on
  970. it. (I'll call it the Stretching Vine.) Instead of going across,
  971. fall down below. There should a swing pole at the bottom right of
  972. that pit. Fall down onto it, and you should land on a cliff. Enter
  973. the wall on your right to access the third Giant Ring.
  974.  
  975. For Knuckles, you will need to head forward until you reach a spring
  976. that will lead you to Sonic's route. From here, go on back to the
  977. pull up machine and follow the guide above.

  979. - Fourth Ring, Location : 2d4006c0

  982. From Giant Ring #3's location, head straight out to the right to
  983. return to Mushroom Hill. You should find another rope swing.
  984. However, don't use it to launch you up in the air. Rather, take the
  985. lower route. Continue down this route, making sure that you keep
  986. dropping down and not going up, until you reach a pull up machine
  987. and a spring facing to the left. Jump ONTO the spring and jump
  988. through the wall. The fourth Giant Ring awaits here.

  990. - Fifth Ring, Location : 38c00740

  993. From Giant Ring #4's location, head straight to the right to return
  994. to Mushroom Hill. Continue heading right, passing along one loop.
  995. Now this part is tricky. Stop where you see a loop that curves
  996. upwards making almost a U-turn. (Therefore, I am naming it the
  997. U-Turn Loop.) This type of loop makes Sonic/Knuckles run up (or
  998. down, depending on your location) the vine, then turns him right
  999. side up. However, at the end of this loop is a spring that hits you
  1000. to even higher land. You do NOT want to touch this spring. Instead,
  1001. once you turn right side up, stop yourself right away. Jump, don't
  1002. run, (as running will turn you upside down and back to the beginning
  1003. of the loop) to the right. Just continue on from here until you
  1004. reach the Giant Ring.

  1014. For Sonic or Tails, start on his route and head right until you
  1015. reach a Mushroom launcher. (I don't know what to call these things,
  1016. however I CAN describe it. It is a U-shaped plant with two
  1017. mushrooms, one with a weight on top. Jumping on the other mushroom
  1018. causes the weight to bounce up and then down, launching you.)
  1019. Continue using the mushroom until you reach the land with the red
  1020. spring on the left. Launch yourself. There will be a thing on the
  1021. ground that should make you jump over a U-shaped pit. Avoid this,
  1022. you need to fall in the pit. there will be a pole in the pit that
  1023. will give you super speed, use it to dash to the upper right, and
  1024. you should land on a red spring, making you cross a loop and into
  1025. another location of a Giant Ring.
  1026.  
  1027. For Knuckles, the best you can do is continue down his route until
  1028. you reach the Mushroom Parachute. (This is the mushroom that lets
  1029. you glide down gently) Use the Mushroom launcher on the ground
  1030. until you reach the land above. From here, head left until you
  1031. reach the pull up machine. Make sure you DON'T fall down here, but
  1032. glide to the left. Continue on here until you reach the same
  1033. u-shaped pit as above. Continue on from there.
  1034.  
  1035. - Second Ring, Location : 1cc00640
  1036. Accessible with all characters

  1038. From Giant Ring #1's location, head straight to the right to return
  1039. to Mushroom Hill. You should come across a U-Turn loop that will
  1040. bring you down and heading left. Follow it until you fall down the
  1041. small pit. Then continue on to the right, crossing many loops. As
  1042. you run, a hidden spring should launch you to the higher land.
  1043. Continue on until you see the Stretching Vine and a Red Spring
  1044. underneath. Use the spring to launch yourself onto a cliff with a
  1045. Mushroom launcher. The wall to the right will lead you to your next
  1046. Giant Ring.
  1047.  
  1048. - Third Ring, Location : 23c00840
  1049. Accessible with Knuckles only
  1050.  
  1051. It is suggested that you get Giant Ring #6 first before
  1052. entering here.
  1053.  
  1054. As Knuckles, return back to the U-Turn loop. When you reach the top
  1055. of the loop, jump off and continue to the left. You should encounter
  1056. a huge loop with a Spring near the end. Try to jump off before you
  1057. hit the spring. Then fall to the right where there should be a
  1058. U-shaped pit. On the right wall should be a bunch of blocks that
  1059. Knuckles can break through. Continue on, falling into another small
  1060. pit and swing down the Swing poles. When you reach the bottom, there
  1061. should be a Yellow Spring to your left. Jump to the left and into
  1062. the left wall, making sure you don't touch the spring, and you will
  1063. find the Giant Ring.

  1065. - Fourth Ring, Location : 294002c0

  1068. In Giant Ring #2's location, there should be a hidden spring. This
  1069. spring will launch you up to the higher land. Continue on to the
  1070. right, making sure you don't fall, until you reach a pull up
  1071. machine. Use the machine to reach even higher land. Continue on
  1072. until you reach a dead-end with a Red Spring hanging on the wall,
  1073. and a Power Sneaker TV to the right. The spring will lead you
  1074. through a route until you reach a rope swing. Launch yourself far
  1075. and high. Continue on through the many loops and springs until you
  1076. reach the Giant Ring.

  1078. - Fifth Ring, Location : 2dc009c0

  1081. After #3, take the route of Knuckles, there will be a pit with
  1082. spiked walls, then a room where you have to grab a Mushroom
  1083. Parachute, and the wind will blow you up. After that room, there
  1084. will be 2 walls, break them and run to the right. There will be a
  1085. bottomless pit after a short route. You'll have to glide to the
  1086. right, but on halfway turn back, and there will be a secret room
  1087. behind the wall, with a Giant Ring.

  1092. The last Giant Ring is easy to get. From wherever you are (as

  1096. enter through the wall. Here you will access the last Giant Ring.

  1107. There should be only one route thus far until otherwise noted. Keep
  1108. going until you reach the second post, or checkpoint. In this area,
  1109. you should reach a dead end with two routes: a grey switch that
  1110. opens a door on the floor on the far wall, and another route at the
  1111. top. Press the switch and fall down. Head left (or right if you want
  1112. an Invicibility Box) and proceed with the route.
  1113. Later on, you should reach a dead end, and the floor should collapse
  1114. below you. DON'T FALL THROUGH!! Instead, you should see an opening
  1115. near your left with a series of platforms coming out of the walls.
  1116. Climb up that small opening. Continue your route until you see a
  1117. small set of spikes with what looks like a tube is connected to its
  1118. base. Push the spikes to the right, and it should move. Fall
  1119. through, and you'll find your first Giant Ring.

  1137. This one can be easy to miss if you don't pay attention. Go through
  1138. the level as usual until you find yourself on one of those circular
  1139. brown corkscrews that brings you upwards. When you reach one that
  1140. has a whole bunch of spikes on both sides of it, and towards the
  1141. top, you find a flaming spring to the right, you are on a good track.
  1142. After the spring launched you, you'll be in a place with a magnet
  1143. on the ceiling, and several spiky boxes around you. Go to the
  1144. right, after a switch that opens the downer route, you will run
  1145. through a loop that sends you down. After the loop, stop. There
  1146. will be a set of collapsing platforms there. Underneath you will
  1147. find a secret route that has two exits. Take the upper one, which
  1148. is a brown corkscrew moving upwards. But don't exit to the right,
  1149. move to the left instead to find your Giant Ring.

  1151. - Second Ring, Location : 25c00740

  1154. This Giant Ring is ALL the way to the end of the stage, but right
  1155. before the first boss fight with the Laser Beam on the ceiling.
  1156. Continue through the stage until you reach a huge cylinder that
  1157. spins you upwards. If you look around and see that there are two
  1158. rows of rings above you, plus the higher land on the right has sets
  1159. of spikes and magnetic platforms, you're almost there.
  1160. With Knuckles, climb up to the left wall and through the long
  1161. passage.
  1162. With Tails, just fly up for the passage.
  1163. With Sonic, there are 3 methods:
  1164. First, there is the upward spinning cylinder. If you are fast, it
  1165. will blast you up high, and you can maneuver to the left while in
  1166. the air.
  1167. Second: after the cylinder, ther is the ledge with the two magnetic
  1168. lift ups. Charge a spindash from the left side of the ledge, and
  1169. immedieatly jump when you release it. If you are lucky, you are
  1170. right in the tunnel leading you to the Ring.
  1171. Third: use a lightning shield or Hyper Sonics "Sonic Boom"...

  1209. the two moving blocks. Keep going until you reach the light switch.
  1210. From there, jump up to the left wall, then back up to the right
  1211. wall. CLimb it, and go through the knuckles-destroyable bricks. Jump
  1212. up on the spring, go past the two TV's, and glide over the spikes
  1213. until you reach solid ground.
  1214. Break through the wall, and there is your ring.
  1215. After you get it, you will be right at the sandslide, which leads
  1216. to the 2nd Giant Ring.

  1221. Go through the stage as normal until the part where you have to
  1222. jump from one sand slide to the other. The trick is to get to the
  1223. top of the other slide, right when you fall into this thing.
  1224. With Sonic, as you first fall into this contraption from the first
  1225. slide, you have enough propulsion to make some big jumps that will
  1226. get you to the right side easily.
  1227. With Tails, you can just fly up there,
  1228. With Knuckles, you can jump and glide your way up.

  1240. room to the right, blocked by the closed door. If you were quick
  1241. enough, it's still fairly open for you to access the last Giant Ring

  1260. right, and the machine will dissappear, and you can glide above the
  1261. pit. There will be a stairway leading to Sonics route.

  1263. After the appearence of the drilling machine, (second appearence
  1264. with Knux), you'll fall down into a room with lava and some rocks.
  1265. Exit to the right, and in the next room, there will be a special
  1266. lift, the one that will move up or down if you spindash on it. Go
  1267. up. Once you're at the top, move to the left, and there will be a
  1268. large hidden room with the Ring.

  1273. After the first Giant Ring, go up with the "spindash lifting
  1274. machine" and from the top, move to the right. Brake through some
  1275. walls, and there will be a room with a moving platform with spiked
  1276. bottom. There is Lava at the bottom of the room. Jump on the
  1277. platform, and there will be two rooms: the upper one will lead you
  1278. to the Giant Ring, and the bottom one will lead you to a 10 ring TV
  1279. box.
  1280. note: If you fall down from the upper room, you'll fall into
  1281. the bottom one.

  1291. fly up, and there will be a secret room right above the middle

  1303. platforms with spikes on their bottom. (At the bottom of the room
  1304. there are lot's of spikes, and you have to exit through the right
  1305. into a tube. This tube is the second one you'll encounter). Climb
  1306. the left wall of this room, and you will found a secret room.

  1308. - Second Ring, Location : 15c006c0

  1311. At the beginning of the level, there will be a big room with lots
  1312. of moving platforms, and 2 Eggman TVs on the lower right corner.
  1313. There are two exits from here, one to the upper side, and one to
  1314. the right side. Choose the one to the right. After the first two
  1315. walls that you have to brake with a spindash, there will be a red
  1316. spring in the right side, shooting you up. With the help of it, try
  1317. to fall on the moving platform way up there. If you are on it, you
  1318. can access the Giant Ring through a very narrow secret tunnel
  1319. inside the wall to the left. The tunnel is in the same position as
  1320. you, when you are standing in the moving platform.

  1322. - Third Ring, Location : 1bc00840
  1323. Accessible with Sonic or Tails only

  1325. After Ring #2, and some running, you will find 3 flamethrowers built
  1326. in the floor. Go past them, open the door and go inside. This room
  1327. will have a big machine with several moving platforms on it. The
  1328. platforms are moved with a rope, and their have spikes on the
  1329. bottom. Go as high as you can, and jump from that place to the left.
  1330. If you are high enough you will reach the third Giant Emerald.
  1331.  
  1332. - Fourth Ring, Location : 214001c0
  1333. Accessible with Sonic or Tails only

  1335. When you pass one of the places with a few giant moving cylinders
  1336. with spikes and hangers on them, check the springs to the left.
  1337. They will shoot you up to hidden places. But the ring is trickier to
  1338. get. After one of these cylinders (the first one if you took the
  1339. route mentioned above) jump on the spring, and move to the right
  1340. where are 2 moving platforms. At the right in the wall there is a
  1341. secret passage with the Ring, use the platforms to get there.
  1342.  
  1343. - Fifth Ring, Location : 26400640

  1346. After the fourth Ring, there will be a 3d half-loop, launching you
  1347. across lots of rings. After this, go back to the left as much as
  1348. you can, and there will be a pit with a Ring TV, a lightning shield,
  1349. some spikes, and a yellow spring to the right. Above the the spring
  1350. there's a hole in the wall. There's the last Giant Ring in the game.
  1351. After you used the ring, jump on the switch below it to open the
  1352. door to the right.

  1358. You enter the Special Stage if you find a Giant Ring in the Zones.

  1360. The point of the Special stage is to get the Chaos Emerald in this 3d

  1364. Rings are worth the collecting, cause if you get 50 rings, you will

  1366. - With a Continue, you can continue the game even if all of your lives

  1429. Don't panic. Even if the game runs uncontrollably fast.
  1430. If you panic and mess things up in the stage, there's a good chance
  1431. that you can't finish that stage.

  1433. There IS a pattern in EVERY stage.
  1434. Some of them are fixed, (with only minor detours) but some of them are
  1435. not. If you can find the pattern of the stage, then you are halfway
  1436. through, you just have to practice if you can't finish the stage.

  1438. Last but not least: practice makes perfect.
  1439. Practice every level, and you have some chance even if you don't know
  1440. the pattern of that level.

  1479. have to finish the code when the screen is still black. This code is
  1480. extremely hard to pull of.
  1481. Once you get it done, go to the Sound Test, set the Sound Test to the
  1482. number of the level, then highlight Special Stage 2, hold A and
  1483. press start.

  1486. First, activate the Debug code. Then in the Sound Test, use the same
  1487. method, except for Special Stage 1 launches the levels of Sonic 3

  1795. Basically, you'll just have to run forward, jumping over the bumper
  1796. spheres, and turning left when you have to. The trouble is, that
  1797. this level will get EXTREMELY fast. It will take incredebly good
  1798. reflexes to go through this level. I can only do it on a slowed-down
  1799. emulator, and even then it's hella hard.

  2028. spheres in the corners too.
  2029. The technique is the same, but at the end, you have to jump to the
  2030. spring sphere, cause a red sphere is blocking your way.

  2032. You will end up in a "room" just like the one you left, same technique
  2033. here. Next "room" is the same too, but at this point the game will
  2034. speed up a little (if you are not collecting rings)
  2035. You will end up in a tunnel instead of a spring, just go into the

  2196. ones. Get one row of the Blue Spheres, then get the other,
  2197. you just have to jump over the red one you leaved there at the
  2198. middle. The exit from this "room" is a yellow spring between two
  2199. bumpers. Jump on it.
  2200.  
  2201. At this tunnel, the bumper will make you run backwards, get the 2
  2202. blue spheres then a bumper will make you run forward, turn right.
  2203. Jump over the red sphere onto the spring.
  2204. There is another trick like this one, you have to turn left here.
  2205.  
  2206. You will end up in "room" with 16 blue spheres in a 4*4 square,
  2207. change them to rings.
  2208. The exit is in the corner, jump over the red sphere onto the spring.

  2372. to appear. Enter the ring to enter the secret zone. The secret zone
  2373. is a rotating maze where you search for the chaos emerald itself.
  2374. There are only 6 emeralds in this game
  2375.  
  2376. Sonic 2: Have 50 rings when hitting a star post to create a ring of
  2377. stars, enter that ring to enter the secret zone. The secret zone is a
  2378. 3D tunnel where you collect rings to earn the choas emerald, first game
  2379. with all 7 emeralds
  2380.  
  2381. Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Find a giant golden ring in a zone, enter it to
  2382. enter the secret zone. The secret zone is a 3D sphere where you must
  2383. convert all blue spheres to red spheres by running into them.

  2385. Other games such as Sonic Advance, Sonic 3D have secret zones that are
  2386. similar to others and well I don't feel I need to cover all of them
  2387. Other games such as Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 use the chaos emeralds
  2388. merely as plot points.

  2390. Super Emerald

  2392. Sonic 3 & Knuckles: The super emeralds are not necessarily collected
  2393. but instead activated by the same bonus levels used to collect the
  2394. chaos emeralds in the same game.

  2396. Master Emerald
  2397.  
  2398. Sonic 3 & Knuckles: The master emerald is merely a plot point and is
  2399. only used for the transformation of Super Metal Sonic. It also has the
  2400. ability to increase the power of the chaos emeralds creating the super
  2401. emeralds. As a matter of plot the M.E keeps angel island floating.
  2402.  
  2403. Sonic Adventure 2: The master emerald is shattered and the pieces must
  2404. be searched for in the hunting levels. It is mostly a plot point and
  2405. its only practical purpose appears in movie scenes. It seems the
  2406. change size constantly and is used to stop the powers of the chaos
  2407. emeralds.

  2409. Other games use the Master Emerald for a variety of plot points
  2410. including the housing of the being Chaos.

  2412. Time Stones
  2413.  
  2414. Sonic CD: Have 50 rings by the end of the level for a giant golden ring
  2415. to appear, enter it to enter secret level. The secret level
  2416. is a 3D world where you destroy UFO's within the time limit to win the
  2417. time stone. No transormitive ability they're used to ensure a good
  2418. future.

  2420. Chaos Rings
  2421.  
  2422. Knuckles Chaotix: Have 50 rings at the end of the level for a giant
  2423. golden ring to appear, enter the ring to enter a secret level. The
  2424. secret zone is a 3D, gravity defying rotating tunnel where you need to
  2425. collect blue spheres by running into them. The chaos rings are used to
  2426. get the true ending.
