  1. nossr50: All you need to do to sell a game on steam is provide them a game demo, how much you want to sell it for, when you want it to become available and a gameplay trailer of your game.
  2. nossr50: Reading their FAQ they do check to make sure you aren't trying to publish a garbage game but I'm assuming they aren't very strict as they say they will put it on their market as long as its 'fun'
  3. nossr50: Brandon what do you think of doing the 3d models and textures for my future game? The way it works if I let anyone work on my game and try to sell it they can sue me for profit in the future, so have to be very careful with who makes game assets.
  4. nossr50: Of course you don't have to make anything until the game is being programmed, I will use placeholder graphics
  5. Brandonxp: sure
  6. nossr50 is now Away.
  7. nossr50 is now Online.
  8. nossr50: It probably won't be anytime soon as I have to learn how to do game programming which is a step up in difficulty from modding, and then I have to learn UDK
  9. nossr50: And if we do make a game for profit we would work out what your cut from the royalties would be
  10. Brandonxp: Ahhh royalties
  11. nossr50: and if all the stars align and our game is somewhat succesful imagine what kind of money would be involved
  12. nossr50: I know 2 things from browsing /r/gamedev from today
  13. nossr50: 1) I want to use UDK or the source engine (heavily leaning on UDK)
  14. Brandonxp: both of which you need to buy rights to use right?
  15. Brandonxp: or use for profit i should say
  16. nossr50: I believe you can go 2 routes with UDK in particular
  17. nossr50: 1) Have them collect royalties if you make over 5k
  18. nossr50: 2) Buy their engine outright and they don't collect royalties
  19. nossr50: Don't know about source engine
  20. nossr50: Submission Details
  21.
  22. 1. I've got a game I want on Steam. What should be my first step?
  23. The first step is to send us a demo or full build of your game. There's a bunch of information we like to see along with your game, so please see our submission form for details on what exactly you should submit.
  24.
  25. 2. How far along should my game be before I send it to you for review?
  26. Your game should be far enough along to show us what the final art and gameplay will feel like. We're happy to take a look at games once they reach the beta stage. Having a few bugs here and there won't impact our decision, but your game should be close to final.
  27.
  28. 3. What if I don't have a playable game yet?
  29. We always take a look at a game before we decide whether or not to sell it on Steam, so please wait and contact us when your game is further along.
  30. nossr50: I think Steam is the gatewat drug to making money as an indie developer
  31. Brandonxp: ya
  32. Brandonxp: I'm assuming it costs nothing or very little to put your game on steam?
  33. nossr50: Pretty sure it costs nothing as long as they approve of it
  34. nossr50: They do collect royalties though
  35. nossr50: So if we went with UDK we are looking at royalties being paid to Valve and to Epic, and then whatever profit we have leftover after taxes we split between us
  36. nossr50: And I know its weird to plan shit out so far, but if we did do this then I imagine we would make more games and have life long jobs
  37. nossr50: And be crazy rich of course
  38. Brandonxp: as long as we make a fun game of course, but i don't think we are the sort of people to come up with retarded ideas for games and follow it through without noticing it sucks
  39. nossr50: Thats what I think to
  40. nossr50: I've been on IRC lately and I am basically a highly regarded plugin developer, I showed the spout devs my vChat shit and they were blown away by the design. I think not only can I program, I can run circles around people when it comes to design. You would not believe how untalented 99% of the programmers for bukkit are, people who have been programmning for like 10+ years sometimes. That may sound narcissistic as shit but I don't see myself making a bad game, I think I can do this.
  41. nossr50: Have you closed your steam window recently I think tommy wants to read this convo
  42. nossr50: I closed mine
  43. Brandonxp: umm
