  1. Growing up rich was an intellectual and cultural challenge. Young Charles Chastain could not stand the reason for it: his father, one of the richest and most successful men in the world, who made his money in more efficient portable toilets and spirit-infused mulch, and who lived in an 80-year-old two story house in a suburb that had once been in "Indiana." So he moved to the big city -- New York, of course, not Seattle; he required a metropolis with true import to the golden days of mortal men -- and made his mark managing his father's holdings there. He found food truck restaurateurs quite to his liking.

  3. And then, for the first time in twelve years, he went back to Indiana. Because someone had murdered his father.

  9. Chastain couldn't have expected to end up working the case with one of the killers. Thuzad didn't pull the trigger, didn't know about the crime until it was done - but he was there as part of the crew, working the same job which ended up in disaster. Somehow he talked his way out of trouble and right into the detective's 'confidence', then worked with him to trace the hit back to the people who gave the order.

  15. renraku was behind it all! a half-dozen different quality of life patents belonging to chastain's father turned out to be lynchpins in secret research the megacorp was doing on HMMV. only by getting in touch with creatures of the night who'd been on the receiving end of other kidnap and assassination attempts was chastain the younger able to track and foil renraku's machinations. vampires, of course, are rare and in near-constant danger - they mostly gather and communicate on the nets.

  21. 0-Wolf's amassed a reputation among the discerning and the desperate - those who need first-rate work and will indulge his eccentricities will find few finer detectives in the world. In fact there may be only one: in recent months, 0-Wolf has found a noticeable but not disastrous decline in his fortunes as jobs that he used to be able to walk away with have been bought out, begged off, or just plain abandoned before he can get them. When he looks into it, he finds that all leads converge in a black box of lost data and forgetful informants. So far, perhaps despite his effort or perhaps because of his lack of it, he's only been able to come up with a callsign.
