- When a friend (the guy the camera turns to in the video at around 0:52) asked me to go to Genesis 4 with him, I was doubtful about spending the entire weekend in such a way, and really unsure of what to expect. I've attended and competed in weeklies before in my area, and they were about as fun as you'd expect. However, I'd never even thought about doing something on the scale of going to the West Coast's greatest supermajor; naturally, I was super hesitant. Still, we bought tickets and good seats in a split-second decision fueled by hype, and before you knew it, January 21st had rolled around. We both got up early in the morning and rode public transit down to the venue, nervousness and excitement building all the while. The second I stepped in, though, everything changed. Gone was the anxiety about meeting top players and keeping myself sane while walking through the venue — instead, it was replaced with a feeling of belonging that I doubt anything else in my life will ever bring to me. I got the feeling that everyone in the building was like one big family, because everyone was so friendly and chill with one another. Over the course of Saturday, I got my hat signed by various top players, watched some sick gameplay, and just generally had an amazing time. Sunday was no different — we got there early enough to watch all the events, from Smash 64 Singles Top 6 all the way down to Melee Singles Top 8. Nothing I've ever done before in my life can come close to the levels of intensity and hype that I experienced at Genesis 4, and if I could work things out a little differently the next time, I would buy tickets for the next supermajor at the drop of a hat.
- TL;DR
- Genesis 4 was insane. I highly recommend attending a large Smash tourney, for anyone out there still on the fence about it.
