What's the deal with Neon Terminus Evangelion?

The year is 2017. Seventeen years ago the world was plunged into hell. September 13, 2000 a massive explosion occurred in Antarctica. This blast was the catalyst of an event called Second Impact. Second Impact would ultimately result in a global water level raised by sixty meters, a consequence of the Antarctic ice sheet vaporizing and the northern ice cap beginning to melt as the earth's axial tilt was altered. Now the northern hemisphere is locked in an eternal summer, the south in winter.

Half of the world's population was dead in a matter of days. They died either as a direct consequence of the explosion, the water level rise, famine, or war. It was initially expected that a small meteorite struck the southernmost continent at near luminal velocities.

In the immediate aftermath of Second Impact, the world's governments fell to panic, some striking out at one another with conventional weapons and nuclear attacks. A global treaty was signed on February 14th, putting an end to the killing. The Valentine Treaty all but dissolved national governments and incorporated the world's militaries under the banner of the UN.

It wasn't long before the true cause of the Antarctic explosion was made evident. A giant, called Adam, was found frozen in the ice. When the giant awakened, it triggered the catastrophe. Adam was the first, but not the last of its kind. In 2001 Buenos Aires was attacked by another massive creature. These beings, known as Angels, have tremendous, almost godlike power, but animal intelligence. The Second Angel was destroyed at great cost through a heavy bombardment with nuclear weapons.

To prevent such a catastrophe from occuring in the future, the UN founded an organization called Nerv and placed it under the control of Colonel Versetti. Nerv spearheaded the creation of a new type of weapon, called an Evangelion, a biomechanical mecha, made using cloned tissue from Adam. Evangelions have the ability to neutralize the protective barrier Angels can create - the Absolute Terror field.

As of yet, Evas are only able to be activated, piloted, and controlled by children. The exact mechanism of this ability is apparently unknown, or at least a tightly controlled secret.

Since 2000, more Angels have appeared, though only rarely.

Now it is 2017 and Angels are appearing with alarming frequency. The high-tech fortress city of New Tampa was built to act as a fortress against the threat Angels pose to mankind. The survival of the species is at stake. The fight for the fate of humanity has only just begun.
