  3. “I understand you’re upset, but some things are simply unacceptable. Clefable, Moonblast.”

  5. No sooner had Sam and Vergil clashed swords when Vergil saw it. On the beach, where they had left Gladion, a shimmering moon appeared, far realer than any fake the prison could provide. Vergil heard a scream, and he stopped. There was something in that cry. Some strange resonance that pulled him into the past. A home burned down. A family lost.

  7. He stepped back. Something was pulling at him. No matter how he tried to ignore it, he could not shake it off.

  9. “You seem distracted, Vergil,” said Sam.
  10.  
  11. Vergil gritted his teeth.

  13. “Are you going to forfeit?” said Sam. “I hope you understand that counts as a win for me.”

  15. Vergil growled. “Call it what you will. We’ll meet again.”

  17. “I’m sure we will.”

  19. Vergil ran towards the beach. Gladion, bloodied and bruised, lay face-down in the sands. Standing above was the Secretary of Agriculture herself, Lusamine. Vergil had every reason to ignore the child. He had every reason to kill the Secretary, and take her power. Yet he didn’t. He didn’t know why he didn’t. Some invisible force compelled him to move.
