  1. And he attacked him like a man deranged, wielding his spiked club. He aimed straight for Perceval’s head, but he ducked aside and the mighty blow landed on his horse’s neck, making it crumple beneath him whether he liked it or not; but Perceval thrust in his spurs and the destrier sprang back up. Back to the attack came the giant, aiming to club his head off without the cut of a sword; he gripped his club and swung it aloft, but Perceval thrust his shield upward and deflected the blow; it fell on the saddle-bow; the destrier bore the brunt and paid the price, as the wicked giant shattered the poor beast’s neck with his bludgeon.
