He aimed straight for Perceval’s head, but he ducked aside and the mighty blow landed on his horse’s neck, making it crumple beneath him whether he liked it or not; but Perceval thrust in his spurs and the destrier sprang back up. Back to the attack came the giant, aiming to club his head off without the cut of a sword; he gripped his club and swung it aloft, but Perceval thrust his shield upward and deflected the blow; it fell on the saddle-bow; the destrier bore the brunt and paid the price, as the wicked giant shattered the poor beast’s neck with his bludgeon.
