  1. 12 Hour Challenge #8
  2. February 15-17, 2019
  3.
  4. Everyone's favorite biannual speedrunning event is back!
  5. ...
  6. ...
  7.
  8. Okay fine, third or fourth favorite maybe. You know what? Forget it! Let's just talk about the event.
  9.
  10. On the weekend of February 15-17, I challenge YOU yet again to learn a speedrun of your choice. The 12 Hour Challenge began in 2015 if you can believe it, and since then several thousand players have participated. Whether you've never speedrun anything before, or you're so rooted in the community that back in your day you did your speedruns in the 4H Center uphill both ways, this challenge is for everyone!
  11.
  12. The 12 Hour Challenge works like this: first, pick a game to learn. Then, on the weekend of February 15-17, give yourself a twelve hour limit to learn as much as you can about the speedrun and attempt a first run. It's unlikely that you'll learn everything there is to know about the game, but that's the whole point! Nobody will be perfect, but it's impressive what you can learn in a short amount of time if you try.
  13.
  14. There are lots of ways to enjoy this challenge. Some people try to learn the same game and hang out together during the challenge to discuss. Others rely on tutorials from Twitch or Youtube. Maybe you find someone else who is learning the same game as you and challenge them to a race after you've both learned the game to see who learned it better. There are even some folks crazy enough to do multiple 12 Hour Challenges throughout the weekend! The event is what you choose to make of it, and I think that's why it's so popular. It's a weekend where the whole speedrunning community shakes things up and learns something unexpected and new. It's also just in time for SGDQ submissions, so there's never been a more apt time to learn something new ;)

  17. Theme:
  18. --------
  19. The theme for challenge #8 is: "Let 'em roll!"
  20.
  21. Learn a game in which rolling is the primary method of movement. Take some time and think about this one because there are some very obvious picks, but there are some really fun games that fit this theme that take a little bit more consideration to come up with.
  22.
  23. Note: The theme is an OPTIONAL piece of the challenge, designed to keep things interesting for returning participants. You are NOT required to use this theme. You are encouraged to consider it. If there's a game you are dying to learn and it doesn't fit the theme, don't let it stop you from learning it.

  26. The 12 Hour Challenge tag will be your source for the streams!
  27. --------
  28. Somehow they tell me that the challenge has become something of a phenomenon over the past few years. This time, thanks to Twitch, there will be a new "12 Hour Challenge" tag created in time for the challenge! It is not present at the moment, but I am told it will be usable by the weekend of the challenge. Please tag your stream with this 12 Hour Challenge tag while doing your challenge so that others can find you.
  29.
  30. If you are looking to view the streams on 12 Hour weekend, it's very simple:
  31.
  32. 1) Go to https://www.twitch.tv/directory/all
  33. 2) Filter by the 12 Hour Challenge tag (when it is made available... it won't work until we get closer to the event)
  34.
  35. Alternatively, if you are watching a stream with the 12 Hour Challenge tag set, you can simply click the tag in that stream's information and it will open a page with all the other 12 Hour Challenge tagged streams.

  38. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - JOIN THE 12 HOUR CHALLENGE DISCORD!!
  39. --------
  40. The 12 Hour Challenge Discord serves as the central hub for the event: http://discord.gg/12HourChallenge
  41.
  42. On the Discord, you'll find places to brainstorm games to learn, ask any questions you have about the event, and post your first run splits after you're done. It's a great place to meet and interact with people who are taking the challenge! I highly recommend it.

  56. For a complete list of all of the rules of the 12 Hour Challenge, please write an essay detailing the social and economic implications the 12 Hour Challenge had on the 2010s. If your essay sufficiently addresses these topics, you will receive a copy of the official 12 Hour Challenge rulebook. Supplies are limited. No purchase necessary. Ignore everything you've read in this section up to this point. There are no rules.
