- Writing Section - Fourth and final section, two tasks, 20+30 minutes of writing time.
- ---
- Integrated writing:
- - 3 minutes to read a passage and take notes about its main points (you’ll see the passage again)
- - Listen to a lecture about the same topic and take notes (usually the lecture will address the same points in the same order, but not always)
- - Read and hear the prompt asking you to explain how the lecture relates to the reading
- - 20 minutes to summarize the points from the lecture and explain how they relate to the main points from the reading passage (the text will reappear during this time)
- ---
- An effective integrated response is usually 150-225 words.
- ---
- Look at ETS 1.1 (endotherm dinosaurs) as an example
- You should be able to see some important things about key words in the text:
- endotherm/endotherms - noun for the animals that can maintain body temperature
- endothermy - noun for the ability to maintain body temperature
- ---
- R0 (main idea) = dinosaurs were endotherms
- R1 = fossils were found in polar regions, and endothermy is necessary to survive in cold
- R2 = dinosaur legs were under their bodies, which is also true of modern endotherms and is necessary for running
- R3 = dinosaur bones had Haversian canals, which allow for fast growth, which requires endothermy
- ---
- Now listen to the lecture and take notes about its main points (which should be the same as the points from the reading)
- L0 = dinosaurs might not have been endotherms (and the evidence from the text isn’t good)
- L1 = polar regions were warmer at the time, and dinosaurs could have migrated
- L2 = legs under their bodies might have been to support their large bodies, not to allow running
- L3 = bones also have growth rings, which suggest periods of rapid and slow growth, which is unusual for endotherms (that grow at the same speed all year)
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- A point-by-point response will be organized the same way as the text and lecture (in four parts):
- 1 Introduction: state the topic, summarize R0 and L0, and explain the relationship
- 2 First point: summarize R1 and L1, and explain how L1 relates to R1
- 3 Second point: summarize R2 and L2, and explain how L2 relates to R2
- 4 Third point: summarize R3 and L3, and explain how L3 relates to R3
- ---
- - You need to be clear (at least in the introduction, but preferably in each paragraph) which ideas come from which source (according to the text / the author says / the lecture disagrees / the professor argues)
- - You also need to use contrast (or support) language effectively, to show how the points from the lecture relate to points from the text (in contrast / on the other hand / however / contradicts / challenges / opposes / casts doubt on)
- ---
- Practice integrated writing from ETS 1 tests 3 and 4.
- Email your responses to me when you’re finished.
