A long time ago I started reading the Bible because "Why the hell does everyone I know happen to be so into this Christianity?" So, I started with Genesis and thought, "This God dude is kind of evil" and was put off by it.

Someone later told me that I shouldn't pay attention to the Old Testament, that the New Testament was about a Ghandi-esque way to show love to all, etc.. And the first thing I ran across was The Cleansing of the Temple. What the flying fk? The rest of the New Testament made zero sense to me. I kept thinking back to the Cleansing and how it seemed to completely break character with what Jesus was supposedly all about. I kept getting told that I was just 'unlucky'/'read things in the wrong order'/'did not have the requisite faith' or something before I basically came to the conclusion that, "Maybe it's not me that's the problem here...".

I recently (as in the past couple days) discovered Marcionism. Where the Old Testament is treated as being written by Satan, and the Cleansing of the Temple apparently never happened according to the Marcion version of the gospels. I'm intrigued by it. It seems to be a lot more consistent. I have to wonder why it never really took off.

Why would this possibly upset you? He chased out thieves, loiterers in the house of God who would disgrace the word of God with their selfishness and greed.

It makes mention of them selling Oxen and goats. They were merchants selling livestock and other such things treating the temple like a common barn.
