  1. When most people think about computers, they picture a personal
  2. computer, or PC. This type of computer is called personal because it is
  3. designed for only one person to use at a time. Personal computers fall
  4. into several categories that are differentiated from one another by their
  5. sizes. The most common sizes are:
  6. ◾ Desktop PC: A computer
  7. designed to be
  8. used at a desk, and
  9. seldom moved. This type
  10. of computer consists of a
  11. large metal box called a
  12. system unit that contains
  13. most of the essential
  14. components, with a
  15. separate monitor, keyboard,
  16. and mouse that all
  17. plug into the system unit
  18. (see Figure 1.2).
  19. ◾ Notebook PC: A portable
  20. computer designed
  21. to fold up like a notebook
  22. for carrying, as
  23. shown in Figure 1.3.
  24. The cover opens up to
  25. reveal a built-in screen,
  26. keyboard, and pointing
  27. device, which substitutes
  28. for a mouse. This type of
  29. computer is sometimes
  30. called a laptop. A smaller
  31. version of a notebook
  32. PC is sometimes referred
  33. to as a netbook (which
  34. is short for Internet book,
  35. implying that this type of
  36. computer is primarily for accessing the Internet rather than running
  37. applications).
  38. ◾ Tablet PC: A portable
  39. computer that consists of
  40. a touch-sensitive display
  41. screen mounted on a
  42. tablet-size plastic frame
  43. with a small computer
  44. inside, as in Figure 1.4.
  45. There is no built-in
  46. keyboard or pointing
  47. device; a software based
  48. keyboard pops up
  49. onscreen when needed,
  50. and your finger sliding
  51. on the screen serves as a
  52. pointing device.
  53.
  54. Multi-User Computers
  55. Multi-user computers are designed to serve groups of people, from a
  56. small office to a huge international enterprise. Here are some common
  57. types of multi-user computers:
  58. ◾ Server: A computer dedicated to serving and supporting a network,
  59. a group of network users, and/or their information needs. Many
  60. networks employ servers to provide a centrally accessible storage
  61. space for data, and share common devices like printers and scanners.
  62. A small network server may look similar to a desktop PC, but may
  63. have a different operating system, such as Windows Server or
  64. Linux. A large server that manages a wide-ranging network may
  65. look similar to a mainframe. A group of
  66. servers located together in a single room
  67. or facility is called a server farm, or server
  68. cluster. Large Internet service provider (ISP)
  69. companies maintain extensive server farms.
  70. ◾ Mainframe: A large and powerful computer
  71. capable of processing and storing large
  72. amounts of business data. For example, a
  73. mainframe might collect all the sales data
  74. from hundreds of cash registers in a large
  75. department store and make it available to
  76. executives. The modern mainframe unit itself
  77. is a large cabinet, or a series of cabinets,
  78. each about the size of a refrigerator (see
  79. Figure 1.6). A mainframe may be stored in
  80. its own air-conditioned room in a business
  81. or school, and may have multiple employees
  82. monitoring and maintaining it. In earlier
  83. decades, smaller and less expensive multiuser
  84. computers called minicomputers were
  85. employed in many businesses, but minicomputers
  86. are no longer widely used.
