Tom Trench sins

I wonder if Tom Trench's sins were something he did that was totally unrelated to the Great War, and that he just happened to die in it.

I stumbled upon this headcanon on DA that Tom was actually just an adulterer from a relatively rich American family (basically some respected old blood, probably from New England), who squandered much of his fortune and reputation on women, being a prolific adulterer, and only really joined the army to escape prosecution and debts after daddy was no longer willing to bail him out (his father was some respected judge in their town), with Katie being the descendant of the one woman he was actually smitten by (no relations between them, though).

I quite like that theory. Although, probably unintentional, I wonder if his name comes from the fact Bongs were nicknamed "Tommy"
