  1. I discussed bike theft with the Gardaí at the last Luas Safety forum, organised by Veolia. The bike rack outside St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre is the location where your bike is most likely to be stolen but in fact, all city centre locations are targeted. Teenagers come along with strong cutters and remove locks at ease. They sell the stolen bikes for €10-15 each to third parties who dispose of them through a network. The Gardaí have made some progress in dealing with the thieves but less so with the network. I asked if kryptonite locks offer reasonable security. Apparently, the only locks that are safe are the very heavy coil locks that are used by motorcyclists. Obviously, it is impractical for pedal cyclists to carry these around due to their weight.

  3. Veolia have worked with the Gardai to apprehend thieves who travel by Luas to Stillorgan/Sandyford and steal high quality bikes at stands there but the problem continues.

  5. The Bridewell has a pilot programme in place at the moment to register bikes with them. Bike theft is at an all time high at present and in particular in the city centre.

  7. Attached please find a bike registration form, you need to drop it in or post it to the Bridewell. Please forward this to any cyclists not on the list.
