+nationalparksign __ I apologise for writing a lot - I am aware that reading isn't a desirable activity for many people. What follows is a hastily written summary that I am sure can be explained better, but shall serve as a starting point!

I see two things happening. The language is being expanded, and the language is being changed/crippled (and opening the door for it to get much worse).

The first proposed change is the addition of some pronouns. That's okay, it's not the end of the world. New words are invented all the time to describe new things. The language is being enriched and added to.

It's controversial if you don't accept the "new words/pronouns" though. But, anyone born into the world with these additional pronouns is going to be okay, because for them it's an extra part of the language.

Everyone else who has already learned the language _without_ the additional pronouns will be disadvantaged. For them it's not ideal, it will be awkward, but it's not the end of the world.

*The second aspect (the "payload" for letting the first change happen) is far more sneaky and sinister.*

It is proposed that *fixed words* we use for *fixed things* are no longer fixed, they can change *and* it's no longer something we can figure out for ourselves. We need to ask or be told in order to be correct. (Before we can "think freely and correctly" about something involving one of these changes we would need to be told how to proceed.)

Here's the thing. What this does is create *a new language* from within! It's a new language that's *extremely similar* to the one we are currently using. It's so similar that no one would ever call it a different language.

But yet it has been changed in a *subtle but profound* way that makes it a new language. And not just a new language - but a crippled language for those using it.

Anyone born into the world with such changes will cope better than everyone else, _but every person is now handicapped._

Everyone is now slowed down.

How to think of this? Imagine the names for colours are changed. What was called red is now blue. What is blue is now green, etc.

Certainly, this is *disruptive* and *confusing* to the brains of those who are accustomed to the current red, blue, green.

If it were merely a change of names for each colour, then we could adapt to the name changes and that would be that. *But it gets worse.* Sometimes blue will be green. But sometimes blue will be blue. Sometimes blue will be yellow.

It becomes *literally* an example of 1984's: _"How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?"_

Is it 3? Is it 4? How many do you want me to say?! I think I see 3? I don't know!

A person's language - his or her means for communication - has been impaired and disabled. At all times a person has to relentlessly think: "is this blue or is this green?"

This conscious effort slows down the mind. It makes thinking more unpleasant. There's a "negative reward". It makes forming a thought an effort when before it was effortless.

It becomes easier to just *not think.* It becomes *easier* to just *accept* whatever you're told. It's green? Okay, it's green. Now it's blue? Okay, now it's blue.

Okay, a plane crashed into a building and it was pilot error. Okay, it was terrorists who did it. Okay, a plane never crashed into a building.

The pronoun refers to something *fixed* - and when it becomes flexible then *facts* become flexible.

It is wholly unpleasant (though perhaps not enough to _feel_ unpleasant) because no habit can be formed. You can't just "get into a groove" - you can't just *practise until it becomes automatic*.

Imagine teaching a student guitar. And with each lesson the strings were rearranged. Or what was used to represent musical notes were swapped around.

The student would have a tough time of playing guitar! The student might decide that guitar is not worth playing.

And those who do not learn this change to their language will be able to think better, faster and with less effort than the rest of the population who is taught this change from birth.

It's a subtle change that cripples thinking in a subtle way, but it likely won't be perceived by the individual negatively. Especially if it's all they have known. But to people who aren't affected by this change, those people will seem slower and more hesitant.

No longer can they describe a day as having "a clear blue sky", because it might be "a clear green sky" or "a clear yellow sky".

You just don't know - because it's no longer fixed.

It's a subtle change - for a "noble reason" (since no one wants to offend others).

If you have ever tried to learn a new language you would know that the conscious mind gets in the way and slows you down. Effectively, the conscious mind is being put in the way with practically every thought a person forms! A permanent obstacle!

That's my understanding of these proposed changes. One change is fairly innocent (expanding/enriching the language), but it's used to bring about a less innocent change which creates a devious obstacle and a loosening of what's "fixed" in the mind.

It's one more "tether to reality" that's getting attacked and weakened. If anyone disagrees - I'd like to know how and why they think otherwise!
