- tax = Money you must pay to the government. (In Massachusetts, the meal tax is 7%.)
- tip = A “thank you” for your server’s good service. (It’s very rude if you don’t leave a tip, but it’s not required by law.) A normal tip is between 15% and 20% of the subtotal (before tax).
- Sometimes a “tip” or “gratuity” or “service charge” is included on the receipt, and then you don’t need to pay extra for the tip.
- ---
- In Massachusetts, 7% tax plus 18% tip is 25% or ¼, which is easier to calculate in your mind. (Then you can go up or down depending on the service.
- If you don’t want to tip, you can go to a cheaper restaurant like McDonald’s.
- If you don’t want to pay tax, you can go to the grocery store and cook at home.
- ---
- “Keep the change.”
- The bill is $17.50. I give $20 and say “keep the change”. This is $2.50 tip.
