  1. 'Oh, yes, sir,' said Dobby earnestly. 'Dobby has come to tell you, sir... it is difficult, sir... Dobby wonders where to begin...'
  2. 'Sit down,' said Harry politely, pointing at the bed.
  3. To his horror, the elf burst into tears - very noisy tears.
  4. 'S-sit down!' he wailed. 'Never... never ever...'
  5. Harry thought he heard the voices downstairs falter.
  6. 'I'm sorry,' he whispered, 'I didn't mean to offend you or anything'
  7. 'Offend Dobby!' choked the elf. 'Dobby has never been asked to sit down by a wizard - like an equal -'

  12. 'A house-elf must be set free, sir. And the family will never set Dobby free... Dobby will serve the family until he dies, sir...'
  13. Harry stared.
  14. 'And I thought I was hard-done-by staying here for another four weeks,' he said. 'This makes the Dursleys sound almost human. Can't anyone help you? Can't I?'
  15. Almost at once, Harry wished he hadn't spoken.. Dobby dissolved again into wails of gratitude.
  16. 'Please,' harry whispered frantically, 'please be quiet. If the Dursleys hear anything, if they know you're here...'
  17. 'Harry Potter asks if he can help Dobby... Dobby has heard of your greatness, sir, but of your goodness, Dobby never knew...'

  23. 'I don't suppose you're going to tell me why you wanted me sent home in pieces?'
  24. 'Ah, if Harry Potter only knew!' Dobby groaned, more tears dripping onto his ragged pillowcase. 'If he knew what he means to us, to the lowly, the enslaved, us dregs of the magical world! Dobby remembers how it was when He Who Must Not Be Named was at the height of his powers, sir! Of course, Dobby is still treated like that, sir,' he admitted, drying his face on the pillowcase. 'But mostly, sir, life has improved for my kind since you triumphed over He Who Must Not Be Named. Harry Potter survived, and the Dark Lord's power was broken, and it was a new dawn, sir, and Harry Potter shone like a beacon of hope for those of us who thought the dark days would never end, sir... And now, at Hogwarts, terrible things are to happen, are perhaps happening already, and Dobby cannot let Harry Potter stay here now that history is to repeat itself, now that the Chamber of Secrets is open once more-'
  25. 'So there is a Chamber of Secrets?' Harry whispered.
  26. 'And - did you say it's been opened before? Tell me, Dobby!'
  27. 'Ah, sir, ask no more, ask no more of poor Dobby,' stammered the elf, his eyes huge in the dark. 'Dark deeds are planned in this place, but Harry Potter must not be here when they happen. Go home, Harry Potter. Go home. Harry Potter must not meddle in this, sir, 'tis too dangerous -'
