  1. Make an image into an icon:
  2. 0) Open the image in Windows 10 Paint, save as 16 Colour Bitmap (*.bmp). It will lose transparency information, so make sure the background is a different colour from the outline first. (This step is necessary because IconForge reads the colours slightly incorrectly from *.pngs, and if you tell it to use the windows 16 colour palette, it turns the darker colours into black instead of what they actually are.)
  3. 1) Download IconForge: https://iconforge.software.informer.com/7.0/
  4. 2) Open IconForge
  5. 3) Open the *.bmp you want to turn itno an icon. Make sure to select 16 Colors and tick 'Include Windows default 16 color palette when converting image to an icon'. Make sure the colours are still correct (e.g. dark colours should not be turned into black).
  6. 4) Left of the palette, click the dot 'Transparent Colour' and bucket 'Fill Tool' and paint the background of the image. (If you're not sure what's background and what's not, GOTO step 0 and make the background a different colour before saving as *.bmp)
  7. 5) Save as, pick .ico
  8.
  9. Edit the icon into Castle of the Winds:
  10. 1) Download eXeScope: https://www.usitility.com/exescope/download-windows-xp
  11. 2) Open eXeScope
  12. 3) make a copy of CASTLE1.EXE or CASTLE2.EXE (since you'll literally be modifying the executable), then open that copy
  13. 4) Resource > Icon.
  14. Enemies start at 310 with kobold.
  15. The dragons are 321, 322, 334 and 335 (only exist in CASTLE2).
  16. 323/324 is the player character.
  17. 5) Select the 16-colour icon you want to replace, click import, and import a 32x32 4-bit .ico you previously saved
  18. 6) Save your changes.
  19. 7) Open the game and verify the icon has changed
