  5. Movement Against Leopold
  6. The movement against King Leopold of the Belgians was very successful and long overdue. Leopold had finally died and everyone was ecstatic that his monstrous reign was over. However, although he had vanished from the world, his legacy was still all too much present and left a big mark on the community. This is because most of his riches went down with him, and that actions cannot be truly undone, so it would be difficult and take a long time for things to get better for them. I would consider this movement to be a humanitarian one, as it was done with all of the right intentions; for the good of the community. The struggle that the citizens have gone through ceased.
  7. I personally felt that the chapter “Victory?” in King Leopold’s Ghost was an eventful moment for the progression of the book. The title is very fitting, as one would assume a victory with the defeat of Leopold, but the consequences would alter their lives forever. Also, it provides some necessary insight as to what happened with the Congo. Leopold was responsible for some outrageously terrible things there during his reign, such as forcing the natives to collect sap for rubber. Atrocities also occurred, like a great disaster, or holocaust, in the heart of the nation. Unfortunately, this was greatly looked over, mainly for the reasoning that there was not enough concern for the Congo or neighboring nations. It seems as though most of the world was racist around this time, so they did not particularly show much respect to the disaster. The Congo has forever changed due to the reign of King Leopold, who was bold, but was also timid, as he shied away from his natural duties. World history will learn from his rule, regardless of whether it was for good or bad.
