  1. Kris accepts Berdly's offer to go to the festival with him. It's not as simple as not wanting to go with their mother again or not having many options after Susie left them to go with Noelle, though those are contributing factors. As Berdly heads for one of the game stands and looks back at them, perhaps for support, Kris stares at him. This is no ordinary staring, staring the way a typical person might look at an unidentified object, or even the way Kris might look at someone talking to them. They have channeled their pure... something, into that gaze, perhaps power, perhaps hatred, directed entirely towards Berdly.
  2. He gulps, and gives some cash to the skeleton working the booth.
  3. His throw hits exactly one bottle.
  4. Visibly sweating, he comes up with the excuse that he didn't properly calculate the throw that time.
  5. They let a grin spread across their face.
  6. Kris doesn't need to do anything in particular to turn this into easy entertainment for themself. Nothing at all would have sufficed, but a stare to show him someone is watching and (hopefully negatively) affect his performance makes for a funnier outcome than (the very low likelihood of) him getting a prize.
  7. By the time Berdly's stomping back, claiming the game is rigged, the skeleton has rearranged the few bottles he's managed to knock over, and Kris has regained control over their face muscles again. There's something in his eyes and expression that looks too defeated to just be from embarrassing himself in front of a classmate. It doesn't matter if it's from some deeper issue of his, it doesn't matter if he saw something in their glare that was never there, what matters is that he's challenging them to go take a shot at the game.
  8. Saying they're saving the money for the food turns out to be a mistake. He pulls out some cash and lets their fingers stay touching for a bit too long when he hands them the bills. Kris feels uneasy, but they have a stupid game to play along with.
  9. They can't help but think if things were a little different, they'd be giving Susie some of their money so she could pay for the balls.
  10. The first throw. It's barely above the bar. As in, the platform for the bottles.
  11. They probably wouldn't have as much combined funding, but they'd make the most of it together.
  12. All three bottles are knocked out again. The second throw is barely any higher than the first.
  13. If she got bored, Susie would just drag them to the dark world.
  14. Kris aims too high and misses the final trio of bottles. They get a small stuffed animal chicken for their efforts.
  15. Something rings in their ears about tripping at the finish line. As if they could get that far. They shove the toy into Berdly's hands and say they're going to get some snacks. Just a break from all the fun. It'll pass.
  16. Their feet carry them to the school.
  17. They can wait.
