- ^ Another major point that he left out: there isn't even the concept of skill leveling in this game. When you use any combat skill, or climb, swim, etc, your character will not receive exp for doing so and become noticeably better at doing that action; they're no longer improvable stats, no matter how often you do them. Bloody hell.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGk7oVGL86g&t=58s This was his first time playing the beta. It's absolutely heartbreaking to hear how he goes from being so excited after waiting over 6 years to devastated by how terrible Cube World has become. If you don't have the time to watch all of it even at 2x speed, then skip ahead to here:

- The game is incredibly unintuitive, painfully unfun to play once you remove your optimistic goggles and the expectation that it'll get better, and revolves almost entirely around RNG-based progression instead of skill-based or at least even just grinding-based progression. "It shouldn't be a matter of COULD BE fun, it should be a matter of IS fun."
- More testimonials:
- >exact same bug from 6 years ago still works
- ayoooo like fuck community feedback and bugtesting n shit
- So this proves that the game wasn't LITERALLY remade from scratch like a lot of people are saying (which doesn't even make any sense in the first place), right? Just moderately overhauled.
- >making the game again from scratch.
- Oh yeah i'm going to blow up my house so i can rebuild it the exact same way again except there's lots of parts missing and im not going to paint it so it looks like a patchwork job. Makes sense.
- >i-it gets good 50 hours in!!!
- But it's the exact same game 50 hours in. Except you'll sail 10% faster, ride 15% faster, and swim 20% faster.
- Why the fuck would you ever EVER think it's a good idea to make a game where you lose all the fun shit you found every time you EXPLORE too much in a game that is supposed to be FUN.
- >literally all of your progress is lost when you change zones
- what did he mean by this
- my biggest issue with this is that loot is so fucking lame, which was my biggest issue in alpha
- >okay so this gives you crit, hp, haste and damage
- >thats it
- >and that's also what every other equip gives you
- like hello give me an extra skill or some cool effect you DUNCE
- >endless leveling
- BUT THERE ARE NO COMBAT STAT ARTIFACTS, MAKING YOU CLIMB TWO PERCENT FASTER IS NOT MAKING PROGRESS
- >new equipment is more rewarding
- WHAT BUT YOU TAKE IT AWAY THOUGH
- WHY DO YOU TAKE IT AWAY AND CALL IT REWARDING, WOLLAY
- This. I don't want to customize anything that's guaranteed to be useless within a few hours
- The alpha was unironically much better than this and it's free https://github.com/ChrisMiuchiz?tab=repositories
- The real problem is deeper than the gear system. There is literally zero progression except movement speed, the game world never scales up, your character never scales up, and you can cheese the game to farm full legendary items within a few hours if you know what you're doing
- AAAaaaaAAAAaaaaaa!
- Oh guys I just had a horrible nightmare!
- I dreamed wollay switched out the XP grind for some horrible gear progression system, but was too dumb to balance it well, so there were only 5 tiers of enemy strength!
- This meant you essentially beat the game within a few hours of loot grinding!
- But it got even worse because if you tried to leave a small zone it would render all that gear useless and take your travel items from you! What a nightmare, an exploration RPG with no leveling up or stat allocation and systems that punish exploration!
- I'm so glad that it was all just a dream and cubeworld is good, r-right guys..? Right???
- The entire point of an rpg is to progress your character and feel as though what you're doing has an impact on your char, not getting reset to 0 every single time you cross a fucking county line, that and if you hate an area but got a decent drop well you're stuck in that area until you get bored of it. The soft locking of transportation is a super fucking major issue also since this game's all about exploration, but you get instafucked since lol gotta farm your basic mobility shit again constantly. It's a horrible, dumb system.
- I feel like not enough people are appreciating how fucked this game is without tangential scaling that was present in the alpha. Even if the gear system is improved, the entire game world is the same difficulty, this doesn't work on a fuck huge pseudo infinite map
- Buyers remorse. Better to defend it and convince yourself it is a great game and not a total disappointment. So people defend it because they are also defending it in their mind as well to keep enjoying it.
- Anyone who does enjoy it would not feel a -need- to enjoy it because they would be busy playing or would not feel so insecure as to defend it.
- >people enjoy grinding so that's why there's so much complaining.
- There are far, far more reasons why people are complaining than just this, but to address this very specific example of grinding: it's less that people enjoy grinding, and more that people enjoyed being rewarded for what they were doing, as well as having the freedom to choose the specific way in which they progressed.
- >Alpha
- >Kill a mob
- >Your character has progressed a little
- >Kill several mobs
- >Your character has progressed enough to level up a skill, combat or otherwise, of your choice - you get to decide what aspect(s) of gameplay your character is good at
- >Tired of sailing slowly, or want your pet to run faster as you ride it, etc? No worries, just level up the relevant skill
- >CW 1.0
- >Kill a mob
- >You have nothing to show for it
- >Kill several mobs
- >You have nothing to show for it except maybe a piece of shitty gear that most likely isn't even for your class
- >You cannot level up any skill of your choice - you cannot decide what aspect(s) of gameplay your character is good at
- >Tired of sailing slowly, or want your pet to run faster as you ride it, etc? Too bad; you have no options to alleviate this issue by improving at sailing
- >Your character will never grow and become better at doing things over time of your own volition
- >In a roleplaying game
- theres already 4 negative reviews before the game can even be reviewed without that brief glitch from a few days ago, even the most rabid fans are starting to question it
- I was defending this game yesterday. Now I pretty much hate it.
- The gear progression system just doesn't work. I went from having a pretty good time for several hours, mostly because my rng luck was shit and I was actually very steadily getting stronger and able to do some white and green quests with the weak gear I was able to find for my class.
- I found an arena, and each round gave me stronger equipment until I had a gold and later almost all purples after going to the town shops. Within minutes, I went from weakling to unkillable god. I turn everything into mush with my warrior spin attack. Nothing even touches me anymore. The artifact boss barely made a scratch.
- The challenge was immediately gone. I don't want my gear to follow me to the next land and be overpowered again, and I also don't want to start over and play RNG again until the god weapon drops and the game becomes a walk in the park. We need XP and levels like in the alpha and scalable difficulty. It worked 6 years ago, it just needed tweaks and improvement and more content.
- Also there's literally no mystery or exploration at all, you can see the entire map. What happened to the fog of war?
- Imagine being Magellan and as you cross from the Atlantic into the Pacific, poof. Into the water with two floaties
- >"Ah fuck, I haven't unlocked my ship in the Bermuda region yet. Well boys, let's swim to shore."
- Hey, at least we know what happened to Amelia Earhart now
- We've had a fix for several decades that completely solves this problem without making your gear that you worked for completely worthless.
- It's called enemy balancing. Don't want the PC murdering everything in the next region after beating one region? Set some kind of unit of measurement to determine the enemies' strength vs the players' strength (like, in the form of levels.), then set those regions for specific strength levels that you should only go to if you you're at or close to the level the zone is.
- I'd think he'd have heard of this method by now, it's extremely popular.
- The worst part is, even if you want to try some lunacy with a 'levelless' game, it's not even that hard to do. Tons of games do literally that while still having itemization. Rip off Zelda franchise but add more bells and whistles. Hell, rip off Spiral Knights but exclude the money grubbing. That game was very good at keeping you playing and having a gear progression that was very flat. Cause most of the progression was based around matching damage and resist types and having new ways to fight enemies. Rather than progress in damage/resistance, players scale based on getting new skills/feats they can perform. New shit you can do is always fun.
- There's tons of games I could name with very flat stat progression that somehow still feel like you make significant progress every time you earn something.
- Or just go all in on crafting. Add tons of really potent battle consumables. Gadgets, potions, throwables, and more. So good that you have reason to keep doing other things so you can craft more.
- Or combine all these ideas. Holy fucking shit this is not hard to figure out.
- >just make the regions items progressively weaker as you venture further from the region you obtained them, not nerfing them into complete uselessness instantly 1 zone away
- sounds like a nightmare to code and a nightmare for the player to keep track of
- The fuck? The game already keeps track of where you got every item and if they're + or not (for the extended range). All you have to do is check for distance from the items biome closest border (which it also already does)
- it would be unbalanced if it was based on how far you got it from the original biome
- ...Which is unlike items with a plus that invalidate all nearby regions by retaining 100% of their stats, how..?
- items that only get a -1 when entering a nearby region gets rid of that much content and even more so for items that dont get debuffed
- Actually, it's the opposite of how you're describing it.
- >Items that only get a ~-10%/-1 star penalty when entering a nearby region opens up that much more content, and even moreso for items that don't get debuffed
- >Can now objectively do more content in that region: content that was already accessible to you at 25% gear effectiveness, and content that was previously impossible for you to beat (which is now possible for you, thanks to gear scaling at a much more reasonable rate, -10% at a time)
- >How can anyone defend this?
- Children and casuals are very easily amused. Newgrounds tier mobile/flash games with ~10 minutes of fresh gameplay and AAA games with dozens of hours of replayability are equal 10/10s in their eyes. They aren't experienced/intelligent enough to have developed discerning taste, the same way a child thinks that hotdogs and veal marsala are equally good, but just have different flavors.
- but the progression in this game is VISCERALLY bad
- you'd think even a child would feel cheated when they cross a region border and visibly lose many hours of progress
- Does he just not wanna "spoil" it so that he can try to sucker people into buying it because he knows it fucking sucks?
- What kind of dev doesn't showcase the basic features of their game? I understand leaving some secrets or surprises but completely not explaining fundamental game mechanics is ass
- I give up. I've fucking done it all. I've searched every single nook and cranny. I beat every boss, I've done quests in every single place. I've even managed to find two more artifacts in the starting region, even though they weren't specifically marked on the map, which means I'm level 4 now. Yet I STILL don't have all + gear, like everyone keeps saying. I'm fairly sure I've done 100% there is in this region. What the fuck do I do?
- Realize that the "100% a region for +'s" was a made up rumor and was already dismissed by people datamining the game.
- this bullshit is a modern day equivalent of someone at school telling you that "if you beat the game 20 times without dying you unlock a new character" and it was only possible for it to spread because the devs are intentionally refusing to answer questions about even the most fundamental fucking aspects of gameplay
- >please don't make early assumptions as there are no guides out yet
- >game about discovering things yourself
- >need a guide or you're not playing properly
- >yet she refuses to answer questions about the game's most basic mechanics, which totally helps people write guides, amirite
- What did she mean by this..?
- >Wollay and Pixxie want you to find everything for yourself
- >there's no guides yet
- jfc @ these two fucks. horrible game design
- Yeah this what the fuck, pixxie has even herself responded with "I don't want to spoil it" to questions about the game lmao.
- "You can't criticize our game because there are no guides yet" what the fuck is wrong with these devs
- I've been searching for an hour now in an area that has the glider over it and found nothing. I am starting to think this shit is bugged or something.
- me too
- I'm at 80% realm lore and there's no reliable method for me to find the remaining two(?) lore spots. Fucking kill me.
- I was told the combat has depth but so far it just seems spamming damage to me and hoping you dont die.
- >create character
- >attack the first mob
- >get annihilated
- alpha wasn't this hard, am i doing something wrong? is the game really this unintuitive now?
- >Go ranger
- >Use clone ability
- >Clone deals no damage, doesn't draw aggro, doesn't seem to do anything
- I am pained
- >Use stealth
- >Still get aggroed
- both rogue archetypes are complete trash now, avoid
- no more counter/parry, stealh is complete dogshit now, shurikens are just shit etc etc
- Ninja sucks because he straight up doesn't have a middle click, among other things, and sprint is shit
- >As some of you might remember, we got DDoS'ed as soon as we opened the shop. It might sound silly, but this event traumatized me and kind of broke something inside me. I never told anyone about it, and I don't want to go into the details, but I'm dealing with anxiety and depression ever since.
- >traumatized for 6 years by a DDoS attack
- Is bullshit of this caliber even physically possible?
- If you act like a bitch people give you free money, its just an advanced shilling technique
- He wasn't actually DDoS'ed. It's just an excuse he hides behind. In reality he paid a low price for bottom-of-the-barrel server hosting and, surprise surprise, it couldn't handle tens of thousands of people trying to access it simultaneously. But "I'm incompetent" is a far less profitable narrative than "I'm being attacked and need your social & financial support because I'm a victim."
- >NPC: Do you like sailing?
- >I wonder what's on the other side of the ocean!
- We'll never know since we lose our boat every nautical mile.
- Mods that fix this shit can't come soon enough... But that'll likely be in 2020
- >New patch tomorrow
- >The non-issues he's patching shows he's fucking oblivious to all feedback, good and bad alike
- I'm out.
- >patch
- >'fixed float'
- >he made it worse
- >Steam chat
- >Watch tomorrow's "patch" break even more shit lol
- I called it, 2ez
- Everything, literally EVERYTHING was better in the Alpha.
- How the fuck is this possible? What the fuck happened to Wollay? Did someone pass by Wollay's house and say his game was shit and too old for modern standards? Did he hit his head? How is this possible. How.
- So how many hours will I have to put into the game to upgrade my lamp to a literal sun?
- Infinite, 'cause the fucking bonuses keep going down until they give you literally nothing. THEY SCALE DOWN FFS
- >starts at giving you almost nothing
- >scales down to literally nothing
- Guess I'll die!
- It's very clear he pumped out this version incredibly fast, or incredibly haphazardly, as evident by the severe lack of basic testing. The campfire crashing, mage hover bugs, etc. are all incredibly baseline regression tests that shouldn't have been around for US to find, hell these bugs weren't even in the alpha. This just screams panicked release instead of careful development.
- I think he's just trying to get it out so he can wash his hands of the whole thing and move on with his life, its obvious that passion he had is now gone. You don't treat a passion project like this if you actually gave a shit about it.
- this is what happens when you cloister yourself away for 6 years developing a game on your own with ZERO outside input
- really obvious shit gets missed, and you talk yourself into thinking really dumb shit is a good idea (like the gear system)
- This is an AGE OLD rookie game dev mistake
- >Starting from what was available in alpha, would a game like this actually take a competent developer another 6 years to make?
- No
- At MOST a year or two by urself depending on how shitty you code.
- fucking no. say what you will about wollay, but he is a good programmer. a programmer that can make a complex design software like plasma should be able to shit out video game code in their sleep, especially for a game as simple as cube world. the hardest thing about cube world is the procedural shit and all of that was already done
- The current beta could be made from scratch, if you did consistent work, in about a year, not 6.
- >CW is totally in the 99th percentile of stable games, u guise!
- >Can't even be launched on Windows 7, a major OS used by >30% of PC users worldwide
- He's clearly ignorant as fuck. I read that line first and stopped reading there; no point in going further
- reminder that cube world had functional projectile systems, voxel landscape generation, 3d model handling and multiplayer in less than two weeks of work. this isn't a man who takes 6 years to render 10 acres of minecraft blocks
- >It's more stable then 99% of AAA games
- Why do indie devs and fans always say stupid shit like this? You know this means literally nothing because not every AAA game is shit, especially not the majority.
- i would expect a game 1/100th the size of any AAA game to be more stable. fucking of course generic 2D platformer #8000 is gong to run better than generic 200 hour long open world #8000
- >Should it have taken 6 more years to go from alpha to this?
- Not when 140% of what we have now was already done 6 years ago.
- You're incentivized not to engage in combat because there's almost never any reward for doing so. With an XP system you're always rewarded & progressing at least a little bit with every kill, so every kill is worth it to some degree. Not so in the new CW.
- The same goes for exploring. Every time you can finally move faster and it feels like less of a tedious, mind-numbing slog thanks to getting a boat or a rideable mount, it vanishes into thin air as soon as you cross a border into another region.
- This exploration game punishes you for exploring.
- This combat-focused game incentivizes you not to engage in combat.
- This RPG game doesn't have a leveling system that allows your character to become better at anything, be it combat, running speed, sailing speed, hang-gliding stamina, or anything else.
- It's a genuinely terrible game now.
