There were huge thorns. Stone pillars with pointed tips were sticking out of the middle of the road. They looked like they had fallen from the sky, with the impact of their landing having done significant damage to the highway they were on.

“Oh, that is kind of a problem. Can we not go around them?”

“The carriage is only really designed to work on paved roads.”

A number of the stone pillars were spread across the area. Even if they were able to get around the first one somehow, there were plenty more blocking the way.

“That armored truck we had before was so convenient,” Yogiri sighed, although it was long gone by now. “I’m kind of sad we lost it.”

The region they were currently traveling through was a plateau, so the ground beside the road was fairly rocky. The armored truck would have been able to drive over it without issue, but the carriage wasn’t nearly as capable.

“For example, even if Mr. Takatou broke the huge thorns?”

“That might remove the obstacles, but it wouldn't fix the broken road.”

巨大 な 棘 が あっ た。 　 先端 の 尖っ た 石柱 が 道路 の 真ん中 に 突き刺さっ て い た の だ。 　 上空 から 降っ て き た の だろ う。 それ が 突き刺さっ た 衝撃 で、 石畳 で 舗装 さ れ た 道路 は 半壊 状態 だっ た。 「おおう。 確か に これ は……。 迂回 でき ない の？」 『基本 的 に 馬車 は 舗装 さ れ た 道 しか 走れ ぬ からな』 　 周囲 を 見 て みれ ば、 石柱 は そこら 中 に 何 本 も 突き刺さっ て い た。 　 どうにか 先 に 進ん だ として も、 その 先 で さらに 道路 は 分断 さ れ て しまっ て いる の だ。 「装甲車 は 便利 だっ た な。 惜しい こと を し た」 　 夜霧 が 今さら な こと を 言いだし た。 　 ここ は 高原 で、 舗装 路 以外 は 草地 か 岩場 だっ た。 　 以前 乗っ て い た 装甲車 なら 道 を 外れ ても 踏破 できる だろ う が、 馬車 では すぐ に 立ち往生 する こと だろ う。 「たとえば さ、 この でっかい 棘 を 高遠 くん が 壊す って どう かな？」 「それで 障害 物 は なく なる かも しれ ない けど、 道 が 壊れ てる のは 直せ ない よ」
