He saw Gregoire take in the bloodbath, in which Tannhauser stood ankle-deep, with gore running down the spear shaft and the dead heaped around him like the proof of unspeakable crimes. He saw Gregoire grin...Gregoire grinned because he was glad to see him and for no other reason at all. He did not care what Tannhauser had done. He loved Tannhauser. The grin restored Tannhauser's sanity.
