48. In 2079, in Washington, the ex-CIA Operative Snow is brutally interrogated, accused of treason against the United States. The chief of the secret service Scott Langral believes that he shot the agent Frank in a hotel room. Meanwhile, the idealistic daughter of the president of the USA, Emilie Warnock, is visiting MS One, a maximum security prison in outer space expecting to find evidence that the prisoners are actually guinea pigs of a huge corporation. When one of her bodyguards loses a hidden pistol to the dangerous prisoner Hydell, he subdues the staff in the central control room and releases the prisoners, including his brother Alex who becomes the leader of the riot. Now the veteran agent Harry Shaw offers freedom to Snow if he succeeds in rescuing the president's daughter. But the idealistic Emilie does not want to leave MS-One without the hostages.
 49. Set in the near future, a falsely convicted ex-government agent has one chance at obtaining freedom. He must undertake a dangerous mission to rescue the President's daughter from rioting convicts at an outer space maximum-security prison.
 50. Caught this late Friday night with my girl after the Drake gig and had a good night overall. After being on my feet for hours it was good to sit on my arse at twelve on the night and just switch off and enjoy a mindless bit of action. And that's exactly what 'Lockout' offers. If you've seen Luc Besson's Europacorp action flicks you know what to expect. I love all of them and this was no exception. Guy Pearce is the show stealer as Agent Snow, the John McClane of the space age. His wisecracks and mindless violence keep your attention. Maggie Grace is as good as ever as the damsel in distress and the supporting actors do a bang up job as well. Almost stealing the show from Pearce, but not quite, is Joseph Gilgun as the nutty Scot, sure to make you laugh once or twice, even if you're hating the film. The effects are well done, the action over-the-top and exciting and it's overall good late night entertainment. As with all these sorts of films, I'm sure critics and serious Sci-fi nuts are going to hate. But as I always say, for people who can switch off and enjoy a bit of brainless fun, this is a must. Let the haters hate and the watchers watch.

***/*****.
 51. Lockout is a futuristic thriller that is high on promise but low on follow-through.

The film's plot, a super max prison in low earth orbit, houses nearly 500 prisoners when something goes awry. Guy Pearce (star of Memento among other things) plays Agent Snow, a self-confident, cocky, low level agent who has been setup for a murder of a fellow FBI agent. He is hiding something he found out the crime scene that devolves into a jerky, chase scene where future cops fire on Snow in public places littered with collateral damage.

His apprehension coincides with the future American President's daughter, Emilie Warnock's (Maggie Grace from Lost and Taken) humanitarian visit to MS-1, the galactic penitentiary, to ensure that human rights are being protected for these horrifying criminals. It all hits the fan when a vile prisoner steals a secret serviceman's gun and blows up the interrogation room, giving him access to all of the controls of the prison. He promptly frees every prisoner inciting complete anarchy.

Snow is offered a deal to infiltrate the prison to retrieve the President's daughter from this "death" space station to earn his freedom.

The rest of the film follows a similar plot, complete with scores of brutal and gratuitous shootings, stabbings, and violent acts in general, as Snow tries to deliver Emilie home for the President.

The end result becomes a conglomeration of random movies that have already been recycled over and over again ad nauseam. There is an aspect of films like The Rock thrown in there with escaped psychopathic prisoners. Also, there's some Star Wars/Star Trek-type scenes tossed in there to complement the fact that the prison is in space (another ridiculous idea that emphasizes the unnerving amounts of money the government might spend on a project to imprison people). There's also a good cop, bad cop back and forth between Peter Stormare (Agent Langral) and Lennie James (Harry Shaw) which is contrived and poorly executed.

It all adds up to stinky chunk of cheese overall.

The acting and dialogue is another weak part of the film. Snow's banter with everyone in the movie is constantly sarcastic and egotistical. After a while it starts to become annoying as his boring his lines which at first were funny, then kind of irritating, and finally just stupid. His incessant one-liners really grate on your nerves after the first 15 minutes.

Emilie's acting and lines weren't much better. She plays the role of the tough-acting, frightened kitten throughout the entire film in constant need of taking care of by Pearce's character. She is mostly a pretty flat character, despite her compassion for her fellow hostages, even the criminals, which seems unrealistic.

The visual effects of MS-1, the chase scene throughout the futuristic New York City, and some of the other sights of the film are probably the highlights of the film, but even those weren't anything to write home about.

If you check your brain out at the door, you may enjoy this film, but if you are looking for a satisfying sci-fi thriller, you will leave the theater disappointed. I know I was.

On a side note, I am not really sure what the title, Lockout, has to do with the film in anyway (scratching my head).

Last thing, as a lesson for me (and anyone else who cares) if a movie is promoted based on who produced the film, that is the babysitter who organizes the director, writers and actors to make sure things are coming together, and a producer who's best film was a mindless thriller that became a surprise box office hit (Taken), you should probably lower your expectations.

My Score - Overall Rating: 5.25 out of 10 Plot: 5 out of 10 Character Development: 5 out of 10 Acting: 5 out of 10 Audio/Visuals: 6 out of 10
 52. Lockout is the kind of manly nonsense no one wants to make anymore.
 53. Guy Pearce met with Luc Besson at the beginning of 2010 in LA to discuss the film and then met with Stephen St. Leger and James Mather a few months later. He thought the script felt original, which is always what he is looking for. He also liked the idea of playing an irreverent character like Snow. He was drawn to him because he's not the typical action hero. He exhibited a lazy and exhausted quality. It has quite some tradition that some of writer/producer Luc Besson's movies get censored for a more profitable PG-13 rating. The censorship for the PG-13 rating is obviously no unknown territory for the filmmakers in Besson's team since they managed to take the edge off it very well by applying almost every tool one could think of. Next to using harmless alternate takes or simply cutting something out, the PG-13 also delivers a censored dialogue, audio line and even digitally manufactured visual alterations (and maybe even blood that's not quite as red as it is normally). A lot of effort to make a film that is usually aiming at experienced B-action buffs suitable for teenagers. a5c7b9f00b
