  4. Tanjong Rhu
  5. The story I have read is Tanjong Rhy by Minfong Ho.Tanjong Rhu is a story about the relationship between Mr. T.W. Li, a rich man in the shipping business, and his mother, Ah Ma. Mr Li has sacrificed everything as evident throughout the story because Mr Li loved his mother very much and has concerned of her well-being. For instance, he had a special place for Ah Ma's chickens in his backyard, he wanted to have Ah Ma go through an operation to clear up her cataracts, he bought Ah Ma a pair of binoculars for her to see his ships, and he was very upset when Ah Ying was being disrespectful towards of Ah Ma in her modern ways. He also let her have her way when she wanted to take her time worshipping in their altar room even though he was late for work. His love towards Ah Ma also went beyond was when he remembered how things had been when he was young, with his mother when they were living in Tanjung Rhu. These incidents proved how Mr Li's sacrifices manifest as his love for her mother, and it had given Ah Ma her best experiences before she passed away.

  7. Leaving
  8. The story I have read is Leaving by M.G. Vassanji. Leaving is a story about the relationship between Aloo, a filial son who wanted to study abroad, and his mother who rejected his dream. It is evident throughout the story when Aloo wants to pursue his dream to study medicine in America, and, to realise his ambition, he has to leave his country, his home, his family, and his mother. For him, leaving is his desire, but for his mother, letting him go is a sacrifice. Mother has never believed in leaving her family behind. When her husband died and left her alone with five children, she chooses to stay with her children rather than remarry and lose them. This was her sacrifice. She is angry that Aloo wants to leave her, and she is worried that she will lose him. He may never return. In the end, her love for her child wins over her need to keep him at her side. She finds the money and lets Aloo go to America. She could have made Aloo stay, but she chooses to let go because his happiness is more important than hers. Here, the truest form of sacrifice has been shown between Ma and Aloo as they being needs to part different ways, However, due to her love towards Aloo and her desire to see him successful, she sacrifices her need to ensure his dream come true.

  10. The Right Thing to Do
  11. I studied the drama The Right thing to Do by Martyn Ford. The drama is about a man lying on the street. Rebecca, David, and Patrick stop and look, but body helps him. Then, a woman in blue sees him and runs to help him. She orders Rebecca, David, and Patrick to bring water and call an ambulance, After the man takes his pills, he becomes better. He is a famous chef. Rebecca, David, and Patrick, are very happy because they thought they had saved the chef. the woman in blue sacrifices herself to help the famous chef without considering any danger. She helps the man regardless of his race, religion, or status. The woman in blue has no idea who the man is but she still helps him. She has a different attitude from the three onlookers who are extremely happy when they learn that the man is a famous chef. Furthermore, despite her sacrifices, she still helps with sincerity. We should not take credit for helping others and expecting something else in return. The woman in blue illustrates this as she quietly disappears from the scene once the man is fine. In a nutshell, this event strengthens my belief that we have roles as good Samaritans who help others who are in need regardless of status and beneficial outcomes for us.

  20. The story I have read is Leaving by M.G. Vassanji. Leaving is a story about the relationship between Aloo, a filial son who wanted to study abroad, and his mother who rejected his dream. One of the values best described in this story is the importance of support given by the family and community. It is evident throughout the story when Aloo wants to pursue his dream to study medicine in America, and, to realise his ambition, he has to face difficulties as he is about to leave his country, his home home, his family, and his mother. For him, leaving is his desire, but for his mother, letting him go is a sacrifice. Mother has never believed in leaving her family behind. She is angry that Aloo wants to leave her, and she is worried that she will lose him. He may never return. Therefore, Aloo has to face his greatest challenge, which is to gain support from his own mother to let him go. Seeing his unhappiness, Aloo's mother seeks the advice of a school officer, Mr Velji. He helps Aloo's mother understand that getting a scholarship is good for him. This makes Mother think about it seriously, ad she decides to support her son's dream. Without Mr velji's advice and Mother's support, Aloo would not be able to achieve his dream to America.

  28. Tanjong Rhu
  29. The story I have read is Tanjong Rhu by Minfong Ho. Tanjong Rhu is a story about the relationship between Mr T.W. Li, a rich man in the shipping business and his mother, Ah Ma. The event that I think shaped the progression of the story is when Mr Li decided to buy his mother a pair of binoculars. He bought the pair with the hope to help his mother see Tanjong Rhu from his office window. However, Mr Li's excitement was dashed when the binoculars failed to served its purpose as Ah Ma failed to see the faraway view of Tanjong Rhu. Mr Li had wanted to have Ah Ma go through an operation to remove her cataracts so that it would improve her vision, but Ah Ma had vehemently refused. He had hoped that the binoculars would greatly help her see well. However, Ah Ma could not see anything through the binoculars as all she could see was the Tanjong Rhu of the past, from her memories. This incident proved that love is indeed inseparable, especially between mothers and sons; which prompted Mr Li to plan an operation to remove her mother's cataracts. However, the constant fight between modernisation and old tradition proved to be a challenge as Ah Ma declined to go for the operation. Despite this rejection, Mr Li continued to shower Ah Ma with his love and filial until her death. Thus, this event showed how being filial to parents despite all the challenges faced will leave us with the best and most memorable memories.

  32. The story I have read Leaving by M.G. Vassanji. Leaving is a story about the relationship between Aloo, a filial son who wanted to study abroad, and his mother who rejected his dream. The love between Aloo and his mother was inseparable. It is evident throughout the story when Aloo wants to pursue his dream to study medicine in America. However, the event that shaped the story is when his mother declines his dream. This is because to realise his ambition,. it means that his mother has to allow him to leave his country, his home, his family, and her. For Aloo, leaving may be his desire, but for his mother, letting him go is a sacrifice. Mother has never believed in leaving her family behind. When her husband died and left her alone with five children, she chose to stay with her children rather than remarry and lose them. This was her sacrifice. She is angry that Aloo wants to leave her, and she is worried that she will lose him. He may never return. In the end, her love for her child wins over her need to keep him at her side.
