  1. [00:33] * FisherP ([email protected]) has joined #unity3d
  2. [00:34] <FisherP> I'd like to see some method to switch the 3D acceleration requirement off and on when needed for games etc
  3. [00:35] <FisherP> unity is a good interface, but any sort of application that needs OpenGL requires you to exit unity3D and go into 2D
  4. [00:35] <tripknotix> i believe 3d accelleration of 2D elements actually run significantly faster than non 3d accel'd
  5. [00:35] <tripknotix> ultimately they do it more efficiently as well
  6. [00:36] <FisherP> that's fine
  7. [00:36] <tripknotix> a graphics card can do 2d in under 10% wattage, where the cpu would use 100% wattage
  8. [00:36] <FisherP> and it's oood to use a gpu for anything graphical
  9. [00:36] <FisherP> oood=good
  10. [00:36] <tripknotix> infact thats the current issue right now with flash, all of these facebook games were built fro 2d, but behind the scenes i hear alot of chatter about building systems to por ttheir current games to 3d acceleration
  11. [00:37] <FisherP> but for applications that need to use opengl if the desktop is hogging that resource the fps drops too
  12. [00:37] <jorgenpt> Flash accelerates 2D rendering, though.
  13. [00:37] <tripknotix> the idea being that if the machine doesnt have a card, it will function th esame as if they built it for 2d
  14. [00:38] <FisherP> do you know what i mean tripknotix
  15. [00:39] <FisherP> i know that linux really isn't a gaming platform, but (and this is an area of contention) if it ever expects to really win against windows or apple on the desktop it needs to appeal a bit more to gamers
  16. [00:40] <Deozaan> I'd probably switch to linux if all my games worked on it.
  17. [00:40] <FisherP> thanks for supporting my point Deozaan
  18. [00:40] <tripknotix> theres an official adobe version of this, but i cant find the link, it was on adobe labs, http://www.flashrealtime.com/m2d/
  19. [00:41] <FisherP> well, partially anyway
  20. [00:41] <Alphacat> Define 'win'
  21. [00:41] <jorgenpt> FisherP: http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/26/left4dead4linux-valve-working-on-penguin-steam-client/
  22. [00:41] <tripknotix> apple didnt need to appeal to gamers, and was profitable in gettign into college hands for graphic design, and video production, you just gotta find a niche for linux
  23. [00:41] <tripknotix> like hacking
  24. [00:42] <tripknotix> =P
  25. [00:42] <Deozaan> servers
  26. [00:42] * FisherP ([email protected]) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
  27. [00:42] * FisherP ([email protected]) has joined #unity3d
  28. [00:42] <tripknotix> http://blog.flash-core.com/ theres another 2d gpu accelled engine
  29. [00:42] <FisherP> I suppose i would define "win" as becoming more popular
  30. [00:43] <Alphacat> It's not going to be gaming that drives wider adoption of Linux, it's going to be usability and application support.
  31. [00:43] <Alphacat> Well, not gaming by itself, anyway.
  32. [00:44] <FisherP> Alphacat: this is true too, but with gaming companyies like Valve and Steam supporting linux
  33. [00:44] <jorgenpt> FisherP: Did you get my link?
  34. [00:44] <tripknotix> i think what wil be interesting, is the Windows 8 Arm, without support for any applications not redesigned for it, its hard to say
  35. [00:44] <jorgenpt> FisherP: Also, Valve = Steam.
  36. [00:44] <FisherP> we can't afford to alienate another market
  37. [00:44] <FisherP> jorgenpt: sry, the irc client crashed, can you link me again
  38. [00:44] <tripknotix> if anything linux shouldve tried to make tablet os compatibility
  39. [00:44] <jorgenpt> FisherP: http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/26/left4dead4linux-valve-working-on-penguin-steam-client/
  40. [00:44] <FisherP> jorgenpt: sry, thot they were diff
  41. [00:44] <tripknotix> what if tablets take over, what would be teh point in linux then
  42. [00:44] <Alphacat> Actually, I didn't think Valve had actually made an official statement saying they're supporting Linux yet.
  43. [00:45] <Deozaan> tripknotix Haven't you heard of Ubuntu on Android?
  44. [00:45] <jorgenpt> FisherP: Steam is an app, Valve made it.
  45. [00:45] <jorgenpt> Alphacat: To Phoronix, supposedly.
  46. [00:45] <tripknotix> i had ubuntu on my windows phone 6.5
  47. [00:45] <FisherP> no, valve isn't yet, but they are seriously developing for it
  48. [00:45] <Alphacat> Yeah, but that's second hand. =P
  49. [00:45] <tripknotix> when android was a baby i had linux on my windows phone Deozaan
  50. [00:45] <Deozaan> :)
  51. [00:45] <tripknotix> were talking about serious linux popularity here
  52. [00:46] <tripknotix> not a few thousand people playing with a hack
  53. [00:46] <jorgenpt> Alphacat: I'm a bit skeptical to Phoronix in general, but I'd have assumed they would've debunked it if it it was all hogwash.
  54. [00:46] <Deozaan> Slackware?
  55. [00:46] <FisherP> i guess my point is, that i think the unity team should think about the option of either dynamically or manually allowing a switch
  56. [00:46] <tripknotix> a switch for what
  57. [00:46] <Alphacat> jorgenpt: Oh, they probably are. I'm just pointing out that Valve hasn't /officially/ stated they are yet.
  58. [00:46] <jorgenpt> Also, Alphacat: http://www.valvesoftware.com/job-SenSoftEngineer.html
  59. [00:46] <jorgenpt> Alphacat: "Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform"
  60. [00:47] <Nameless> The problem with Linux is that it's directly competing against microsoft as a software desktop OS. Reason Apple succeeded is because they didn't compete directly with Microsoft and they aren't just selling by software. They enter the market as a total package. Right now there's not enough reason for most users to adaopt Linux because they don't see the value in it. And they don't want to
  61. [00:47] <Nameless> relearn how to use another OS. If Linux wish to reach critical mass, it needs hardware support.
  62. [00:47] <FisherP> to change the desktop rendering to 2d when another app required the performance of the 3d acceleration
  63. [00:47] <tripknotix> i think trying to run any unity game on the cpu would yeild the same results as flash, 5,000 polygons total
  64. [00:47] <FisherP> at the moment games have a big fps hit
  65. [00:47] <tripknotix> does that do more harm then help
  66. [00:47] <tripknotix> ask yourself that question FisherP
  67. [00:47] <tripknotix> for the majority of people out there
  68. [00:47] <tripknotix> the bigger picture
  69. [00:48] <Alphacat> jorgenpt: Sure, but lots of companies work on things that never get released. (Although I'd say this one has a pretty good shot.)
  70. [00:49] <Alphacat> You don't have to convince me. =P I'm just pointing out nothing's official until Valve says something about it.
  71. [00:49] <jorgenpt> Sure. :-)
  72. [00:50] <Alphacat> And Nameless has a good point.
  73. [00:50] <FisherP> tripknotix: do you play minecraft?
  74. [00:51] <Alphacat> I installed a dual-boot into Ubuntu on this machine when I set it up, but I never got around to using it because I was too lazy to refigure out my workflow.
  75. [00:52] <FisherP> i play minecraft a little bit, and I know that I can't play in unity3d
  76. [00:52] <FisherP> i have to resort to unity2d
  77. [00:52] <FisherP> for decent performance
  78. [00:52] <Alphacat> ( Also, I forgot my Ubuntu password at some point. That was a little embarrasing. )
  79. [00:53] <FisherP> or kde where i can toggle compositing off
  80. [00:53] <Alphacat> Unity2D? What?
  81. [00:54] <FisherP> i take it this is an irc channel for the unity desktop for ubuntu (otherwise I'm really in the wrong place and very embarassed)
  82. [00:54] <Alphacat> No, this is a chatroom for the game development tool Unity 3D.
  83. [00:54] <Alphacat> *engine
  84. [00:55] <FisherP> oh, (turns red with embarassment)
  85. [00:55] <FisherP> sry guys
  86. [00:55] <FisherP> forget everything I said
  87. [00:56] * FisherP ([email protected]) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
  88. [00:57] <jorgenpt> Hahaha
  89. [00:57] <Alphacat> Wow.
  90. [00:57] <jorgenpt> That's hilarious.
  91. [00:57] <Alphacat> Yeah, he said Unity2D, I went 'wtf', Googled it, and was thinking 'there's no way...'
