  1. >wandering through last hour of gun show
  2. >walk past old guy cleaning up his table of revolvers
  3. >he's been here before, he can't seem to sell this one antique
  4. >be rifle guy, not much interest in pistols, see if I can get a deal
  5. >already live with crazy moist nugget ghost who tries to get me to dig trenches in the yard
  6. >guy practically gives me it
  7. >take it home and look it up
  8. >1892 french service revolver
  9. >weird calibre, no production ammo, no brass, no bullets
  10. >one recipe posted on line, similar to 32 s&w long
  11. >order a handful of brass and bullets
  12.
  13. >wake up next morning to the tittering of women's voices in the kitchen
  14. >dry shirt, no pool of drool from the nugget ghost
  15. >wander down to the kitchen
  16. >the nugget is sharing a pot of tea with another woman, looking serious for the first time ever
  17. >god dammit, another gun ghost
  18. >she rises to greet me and bows slightly "Good morning"
  19. >a very slight continental french accent
  20. >dressed head to toe in black: floor length skirt, pleated blouse, bow tie, the works
  21. >deep brown hair done up into a french style braid
  22. >bonerpls.jpg
  23. >make breakfast, she spends the entire time staring at me while drinking her tea
  24. >nugget is starting to get flustered, starts sneaking vodka
  25. >1892 pretends to not notice as you snatch the flask away
  26. >where does she get it from anyway?
  27. >nugget grabs it back while howling in russian, disappearing into the wall
  28. >left sitting at table with other ghost
  29. >feel bad for nugget, but she gets crazy when she drinks
  30. >1892 sighs into her tea
  31. >one gun ghost is more than enough, but two is going to do you in
  32. >tell 1892 that if she wants to stay in the house while you figure out what to do with her there's rules
  33. >drinking is to kept private, no haunting the neighbours, the house is to remain clean
  34. >no trenches in the front yard rule gets a raised eyebrow from the ghost
  35. >1892 agrees and introduces herself as Etienne
  36. >weird, nugget didn't have a name
  37.
  38. >couple of days go by
  39. >nugget has been sneaking into the bed at night when Etienne isn't around
  40. >leaving drool again
  41. >nugget will only talk to me
  42. >Etienne is the opposite of nugget: quiet, non-drinker, clean
  43. >spotted her cleaning up behind nugget
  44. >wake up to a pot of tea every morning
  45. >bullets and brass show up
  46. >load up that recipe I found
  47. >test fit completed cartridge for OAL
  48. >spot Etienne sitting with knees together gripping her skirt face beet red
  49. >seen this face on nugget before, but she's more "open" about it
  50. >this is actually kinda cute
  51. >time for gentle bulli
  52. >ask her if she's feeling ok, is there something wrong?
  53. >she gasps out that the cartridge is a little long
  54. >smile and tell her that the best cartridges are snug to the front of the chamber
  55. >she gasps slightly "how lewd!"
  56.
  57. >rip out fifty rounds
  58. >time for test firing out the back door
  59. >suck at shooting pistols
  60. >Etienne is visibly vibrating, can hardly follow
  61. >face even deeper red
  62. >line up on the berm and cock back for single action and fire
  63. >Etienne moans loud enough to hear through the ear plugs
  64. >finger trigger and fire with double action through the rest
  65. >she's moaning and panting leaned up against the wall her butt sticking out slightly
  66. >a few more cylinders later and she can almost keep her composure while firing
  67. >she's totally different from nugget
  68. >nugget jumps up and down and rages in russian at whatever we're shooting at
  69. >then proceeds to keep the neighbours up all night loudly rubbing it out
  70.
  71. >Etienne sneaks into the room that night and crawls awkwardly into bed while trying not to wake anything
  72. >doesn't work
  73. >look down to find Etienne snoring peacefully with her head on my chest
  74. >a creak at the door and a glimpse of nugget's pouting face before drifting off again
  75. >wake up to ghost sandwich
  76. >shirt is soaked
  77. >they both drool, it's kinda cute
  78.
  79. >settle into routine at home and work
  80. >wake up to peel two ghosts off
  81. >take Etienne to work squirrelled away in the backpack
  82. >nugget does whatever nuggets do during the day
  83. >probably getting into street fights with mausers or something
  84. >come home for supper while Etienne drinks tea with nugget
  85. >if we can intercept nugget before she starts drinking we go to the range
  86. >actually spot in the woods with some logs as a berm
  87. >nugget and Etienne work well together
  88. >the russian being especially critical of the ranged shooting
  89. >misses earn a swat on back of the head
  90. >Etienne is careful with her instruction
  91. >she holds herself close and holds my arm at the wrist
  92. >no matter how fast we shoot, it's always smooth like a dance
  93. >good runs through the course earn a peck on the cheek
  94.
  95. >come home from work early one day, twisted a drive shaft off
  96. >find front door open
  97. >draw Etienne, her ghost close behind across the lawn
  98. >step across the threshold and start sweeping the main floor
  99. >hear shrieking from living room
  100. >find nigger in living room fingering the shitty tv
  101. >nugget is loosing her mind, wants to use her bayonet for its intended use
  102. >Etienne grabs my arm as the man lunges and pulls me out of the way as he bolts to the door
  103. >nugget is already chasing the attempted thief
  104. >Etienne has her arms wrapped around me her whispers begging to let the man go
  105. >Call cops and report it to the responding officer
  106. >kinda pissed at the situation and the ghost for stopping the removal of a piece of shit
  107. >she knows it too, she's sitting at the table staring at her lap
  108. >finish supper and ask her what the fuck that was
  109. >she spends the evening letting her story out
  110. >she killed a lot of people
  111. >too many of her owners were killed
  112. >after the last war she become a prize and lived a quiet life with her owner until he died of old age
  113. >the first one to do so
  114. >she now had found an owner who gave a shit about her and wasn't about to risk him being foolish
  115. >feeling kinda bad for being angry
  116. >walk around the table and kiss the girl on the lips
  117. >ever seen a gun cry? You don't want to.
  118. >kiss her again through the tears
  119. >it's late, it's been a long day and sleep is starting to creep up
  120. >pick her up and drag her to bed
  121. >ghosts are light but it must be a pistol thing to be this light
  122. >seat her at the edge of the bed and start peeling her coat and blouse off
  123. >skirt is next, revealing an extremely modern set of bra and panties
  124. >she's turning red
  125. >tuck her into bed and crawl in beside her wrapping both in the fluffy blankets
  126.
  127. >next day dawns to find rattling in the kitchen
  128. >nugget's back and she's singing "dark-eyed cossack girl" while putting the kettle on
  129. >she's singing in the baritone of a long dead russian solder
  130. >last time she did that was after the two of you nailed that coyote who was killing the neighbourhood dogs
  131. >flip on the radio to catch the news
  132. >report of some "trayvon" who was killed after approaching the police with a weapon
  133. >no weapon was found after but a small girl was seen fleeing the area shortly after
  134. >the man's mother was quoted saying "he dindu nuffin"
  135. >a glance at nugget as she twirls and sweeps across the floor
  136. >probably best not to ask
  137.
  138. >first pot of tea was nearly gone along with breakfast when Etienne finally wandered down
  139. >the tea handed to her in her favourite cup gets a barely registered nod
  140. >she's blearily eyeing nugget as the same slouches on the table humming another forgotten tune
  141. >a shaken head is the response to Etienne's unstated question
  142. >she smiles slightly and taps the side of her head
  143. >fucking guns, she probably figured it out
  144.
  145. >breakfast is over, time to wage war on the weeds in the potato patch
  146. >both guns and their girls come out for some sun
  147. >a couple of hours of hoeing and the decision is made
  148. >explain to Etienne that she will be the guard of the household
  149. >it's now her job to keep the people and other guns safe, whatever that takes
  150. >she's blushing again with both hands over her mouth in an attempt to hide a huge grin
  151. >keeps repeating "yes, of course!"
  152. >an unintended miscommunication has likely occurred but it's unfathomable as to what
  153. >get back to hoeing
  154. >gotta do it right or nugget'll get weird again
  155. >where is that girl anyway?
  156. >she's leaned over the back fence shaking her fist and yelling incoherently
  157. >at a mauser a block away who is doing the same before she is suddenly yanked back into her yard
  158. >huh
  159.
  160. >the past few days since the thief's timely end have been interesting
  161. >a group of thugs have started rioting downtown smashing and burning cars
  162. >whole city is on edge
  163. >asked nugget why people are terrible to each other
  164. >she smiled sadly and told me it gets far worse when the demons come
  165. >she stopped talking after that for a while
  166.
  167. >went shopping with Etienne one evening saw a group of men boarding up stores
  168. >they mostly had new stuff save for a tired looking Hopkins & Allen who looked far to thin for what was going to be asked of her
  169. >Etienne wished her luck with a hug
  170. >she got a headpat while Etienne wasn't looking
  171. >I hope I see her again, she seemed nice
  172.
  173. >the girls and I watched buildings burn on the news
  174. >we're far enough out that we shouldn't have much risk but Etienne insisted on inspecting the area around the house herself before bed
  175. >mentioned that she ran into the mauser down the road doing the same
  176. >at least we're not alone tonight
  177.
  178. >Etienne has changed
  179. >she smiles a bit more
  180. >laughs a bit longer
  181. >she's quite bold, coming to bed at the same time instead of sneaking in
  182. >her sleepwear is getting... thinner
  183. >must be a french thing
  184. >nugget still sneaks in and drools but has been caught still sleeping in the morning
  185. >less drinking too since she's on guard since the riots
  186. >still falls off the crate once in a while
  187. >go to work one morning
  188. >lock the door, turn around
  189. >step into nothing
  190. >chest hits the far side of the excavation and tumble into a trench
  191. >Etienne comes to the door in answer to the pained cries
  192. >gasps as she steps from the door to both the broken human at the bottom and the sheer size of the excavation
  193. >pauses and squints at the network of trenches
  194. >"nugget, is this Crimea 1943?"
  195. >a moist nugget complete with bayo inbeds itself into the earth beside Etienne
  196. >followed closely by a completely uniformed and filthy nugget who perches proudly on the piles of dirt between trenches
  197. >"Da! Those filthy fascists will never take us now comrade ally!"
  198. >smug bitch, we both know how that turned out for the soviets
  199. >climb out of trench
  200. >now have limp and a possible concussion
  201. >then managed to really put a foot in it
  202. >"Hunny, I have to go to work and can you please get nugget to clean this up before she kills the mailman"
  203. >both guns are staring
  204. >oops, Freudian slips and all
  205. >ha ha!
  206. >humans can't be in relationships with guns, right?
  207. >they're still staring as the truck pulls away
  208.
  209. >same day
  210. >having lunch in a nearby restaurant
  211. >aw yiss, motherfucking freedom fries
  212. >hunting buddy sits down across
  213. >learn lots about old guns from this guy
  214. >casting, paper patching, weird loads
  215. >ghosts love him even if he can't see them
  216. >his winchester told me that they whisper to him in dreams
  217. >hope his will is solid when he croaks, otherwise some gunnapping is going to happen
  218. >asks how the riots went
  219. >tell him about buying and loading Etienne
  220. >he's pretty keen to see how she shoots
  221. >tells of another gun guy he met down the street from me
  222. >says the young guy has a mauser and an antique pistol, will set up a meeting some time
  223. >this sounds familiar, pretty sure the guns already know each other
  224.
  225. >stopped at a saddlery that got spotted a little while ago when hauling up north
  226. >got the kid to build a shoulder holster for Etienne
  227. >pay through the nose for custom work
  228. >At least can carry her properly now
  229. >get home a little late
  230. >front yard is perfect
  231. >pretty sure there's even a dog poop on the lawn
  232. >Etienne is attempting to learn to cook
  233. >stole the xmas apron that floats around the house
  234. >she's getting better, less heat and more patience
  235. >while we're waiting she gets fit in the new holster and the whole affair is strapped on
  236. >her tomato ancestry is showing
  237. >"I can be with owner all day, and so close"
  238. >a slight wiggle is added to the statement
  239. >her supper masterpiece is egg drop ramen with garlic
  240. >tell her it's actually good
  241. >she snaps up straight with her cup of tea neatly against her lips trying to hide a smug smile
  242. >washing dishes, Etienne is drying when there's a knock at the door
  243. >answer to find a clean cut youngish man haunted by a very stiff, imperious looking ghost
  244. >do my best to maintain a focus on the human
  245. >people get weird when you shift your attention between them and empty space
  246. >he introduces himself as Brian, who lives just down the road and had some reloading questions
  247. >invite him in
  248. >Etienne doesn't look up from the dishes when the other ghost walks through the kitchen
  249. >"haven't seen a Reichsrevolver in a long time"
  250. >the ghost stops for beat, nods at Etienne, and continues on to sit with her owner at the table
  251. >find the guts for the coffee percolator and making small talk with Brian
  252. >get a good look at the reichsrevolver
  253. >average height, brown hair pulled back to a ponytail, dark blue summer dress
  254. >the imperious look doesn't waver
  255.
  256. >Brian explains how he acquired the old revolver from an estate sale with a mauser 98
  257. >wants to load for both
  258. >listens intently to Etienne's experience
  259. >at a pause in the conversation he puts his coffee on the table and gets a serious look
  260. >"We should go to the range sometime, but I don't know if we can keep the rifles from killing each other off."
  261. >wut
  262. >"holy shit dude, how did you think I know to ask you? your mosin starting shit with Arge and digging trenches?"
  263. >man's got a point
  264. >had no idea there was others who could see ghosts, but nugget wasn't shy either
  265.
  266. >ask straight up if he can see the ghosts
  267. >his hand grasps the revolver's, intertwining their fingers
  268. >a soft gasp comes from the kitchen
  269. >the reichsrevolver blushes
  270. >that's some bold moves, good thing there's no children around
  271. >she introduces herself as "Pinky"
  272. >the mauser is "Arge", apparently she thinks she is an Argentinian 98
  273. >actually a true M98
  274. >chuckle about the delusions of rifles
  275. >the pistols nod solemnly
  276. >plans are made for a range trip in a couple of days to give the girls some exercise
  277.
  278. >bidding the pair a good night
  279. >Etienne clumsily trips and grabs a hand to steady herself
  280. >she's not letting go
  281. >standing in the doorway
  282. >she refuses to make eye contact
  283. >won't let go either
  284. >getting awkward
  285. >have to peel her hand off
  286. >get huffy cheeks from her in response
  287. >she crawls into bed a bit later then usual
  288.
  289. >off to the range
  290. >Etienne asked that all her rounds be knocked down, evened and sized to the tightest tolerance
  291. >she insisted that nugget's ammo get the same treatment
  292. >old scores are to be settled
  293. >nugget knows something's up
  294. >usually gets to ride in the box to the range
  295. >gets forced into the cab
  296. >getting the dead fish eyes
  297. >can probably smell the fear
  298. >assure her we're going to the range, not the gunsmith
  299. >learned she has sharp teeth last time we went
  300. >she swept the whole house when she came home the night Pinky and Brian were over
  301. >now am locking her in the cab for a trip
  302. >Etienne isn't helping, the tension is thick enough to cut
  303. >nugget explodes out the truck at the range, heads for the woods
  304.
  305. >Brian is pulls up in a shitty compact a while later
  306. >the car is immediately assaulted by nugget trying to claw her way into Arge
  307. >Arge crawls through the skylight and attacks nugget from above
  308. >why they don't float through stuff to get at each other is a mystery of the universe
  309. >both are flailing their arms as they try to slap the other
  310. >nugget appears to be winning as she drives Arge into the woods
  311. >both revolvers look mortified
  312. >Pinky leans over to Brian and asks what he what they were going to do
  313. >Brian sighs
  314. >"same thing we do every time we come to the range Pinky, let her try to take over the world"
  315.
  316. >setting up at the picnic table
  317. >check over Pinky's loads
  318. >Etienne pretends that she isn't jealous of the attention Pinky's getting
  319. >been able to get good groups without Etienne's help
  320. >not happening this time
  321. >got her pinned up against my back, her arm in line with mine
  322. >no helpful tips in the ear this time
  323. >not allowed to fuck up
  324. >dishonour is worse then death
  325. >she'll accuse me of insulting Sergei Mosin in front of nugget
  326. >three shots are nine ring
  327. >interrupted by Arge laying siege to nugget who has flipped the next table over claiming it as "russian clay"
  328. >rocks, 12 ga hulls, insults flying
  329. >point at woods
  330. >"first one to the forest gets the winter palace!"
  331. >positions are abandoned as both break to the trees
  332. >tactics bitches
  333.
  334. >Pinky shoots with Brian for the first time
  335. >don't watch out of politeness
  336. >turn around to find Pinky a quivering mess on the ground
  337. >Brian drags her to the car to calm down
  338. >Etinne's a little too smug
  339. >like she was any better
  340. >the rest of Etienne's ammo gets planted into a beer can making it dance out of range
  341. >get polite applause from Brian
  342. >things get serious when the rifles come out
  343. >propane tanks, car wheels, and the keg at five hundred get more holes
  344. >a set of skis and we could hold the soviets back
  345.
  346. >it's been a little too quiet
  347. >nugget and Arge haven't reappeared
  348. >Pinky volunteers to go search
  349. >Etienne can't abide, and demands to go as well
  350. >crack a beer and wait for the guns to come back
  351. >two beers later and the four guns emerge from the trees followed by a very shabby fifth
  352.
  353. >looks like she's been through hell
  354. >dirty, a little too skinny, dressed in the tatters of an OD dress and jacket
  355. >hanging off Arge and nugget
  356. >Etienne and Pinky lead them out of the forest
  357. >all four look upset
  358. >get the story from Etienne
  359. >rifles were fighting in the woods
  360. >stumbled on ghost sitting under tree by the pond
  361. >the ground had grown up around her
  362. >rifles couldn't make her budge
  363. >said that her owner would be back to claim her
  364. >Pinky promised her that we'd find her owner if she came with
  365. >her owner threw her into the lake in a fit after she broke her firing pin
  366. >it's been thirty two winters
  367. >the enfield is holding her arms in front of her, staring at the ground
  368.
  369. >ask if she knows where in the pond she ended up
  370. >she nods, it's too deep for her
  371. >ask nugget to lead us back
  372. >bit of trek, thank god for road beer
  373. >ask ghost what she is
  374. >Lee Enfield Mk1, goes by Lee
  375. >as far as ponds go it's pretty nice, couple of hundred yards across
  376. >needs a swinging tree
  377. >ghost points at a spot just off shore
  378. >time for some fishing
  379. >spend twenty minutes diving for it
  380. >Brian takes over, Lee keeps pointing him at the same spot repeatedly
  381. >one more time, he's down there a while
  382. >breaks the surface with rusted hulk of a rifle over his head
  383. >Etienne gasps and touches the back of my arm
  384. >the two rifles audibly groan, Pinky goes stony
  385. >get a look at the rifle while Brian recovers
  386. >wood's rotten, action solid, magazine a couple rusty leaves in the bottom
  387. >overall not as bad as expected
  388.
  389. >heading back to the vehicles
  390. >Lee is excitedly telling nugget and Arge about how much she's looking forward to seeing her owner
  391. >the two rifles put on false smiles, but their eyes are betray them
  392. >the more Lee talks the angrier Brian gets
  393. >with the vehicles in sight he loses it, starts yelling towards the rifles
  394. >the three start cowering
  395. >high points include spineless british rifles and shitty owners
  396. >he collapses on nugget's upturned picnic table while nugget and Arge comfort a sobbing Lee
  397. >Pinky sits beside him her arms wrapped around his waist
  398. >poor sweet summer child, he's never been to a gun amnesty
  399.
  400. >through her sobs, Lee mumbles out that she must be with her owner
  401. >Brain walks up, grabs the sides of her face
  402. >"look at me. I am your owner now."
  403. >she's crying harder
  404. >that's nice, a good end for Lee
  405. >looks like it's time to make a graceful exit
  406.
  407. >trip home is quiet
  408. >nugget gets the truck box to herself but her heart isn't in it
  409. >Etienne is dead silent
  410. >Unload the guns and gear into the house
  411. >Etinne has borrowed nugget's vodka and is pulling on the flask like water in the desert
  412. >gently pull the flask from her and put it down on the counter
  413. >the dam breaks
  414. >she's clinging to my jacket sobbing and begging to never be abandoned like that
  415. >gut wrenching
  416. >hands on her arms
  417. >try to reassure her
  418. >she's nearly insensate
  419. >tugging on the jacket balled in her fists
  420. >starts repeating "I love you" over and over
  421. >pull her into a hug and squeeze
  422. >"I'll never let you go, because I love you too"
