My first blow was to his wrist, spinning the knife from his hand. He grunted with pain as I hit him a second time: a blow to his head that sent him to his knees. He wasn’t laughing now. There was fear in his eyes. He came slowly to his feet. I could have hit him again but I let him be. He turned and with a curse set off after his companions. They were all running up the hill as if the Devil himself were at their heels.
