41. The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth. However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation. In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage--even as their former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought--the fleet also faces internal political conflict in which the rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen. In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed.
 42. When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
 43. The show has a much different feel compared to the original version of the series; that bothers some people. All I could recommend to them is that different is not automatically bad; sometimes different is simply 'different'.

The BEST way to watch this series is to not even THINK about the original; the current series is SO different from the original that is shouldn't be viewed as a remake but instead more like a parallel universe.

When I heard of the casting for the new series I had doubts the series would fly; Edward James Olmos didn't strike me as an officer on a sci-fi series. Many of the cast members are basically unknowns. The gender change of some characters seemed like a risk more likely to fail than succeed.

After watching the miniseries and the first two seasons, these casting choices aren't a problem to me now; they turned out fine.

Some people consider the original series to be 'cheezy', but I won't do that. My best short description of it would be 'family friendly'. I won't spend lots of time bashing the series because it really doesn't deserve it.

The new series works with the basic template of the original series storyline: huge robot civilization attacks humanity, almost completely destroying it. Surviving humans head into space, fleeing the robots in a search for the mysteries 13th colony ( planet ) of civilization known as Earth.

The moods of the show have a very large contrast: the original show has hope, while the current show is depressed, desperate, with the basic organization of society being tested. The original show had lots of leather for fighter pilots and black sweaters with high collars for officers; the current show has a bit more black, with more of a daunting military feel to it. The original show gave a feel of old ancient Earth civilizations, while the current show has more debate of religion and Gods.

A few character changes exist between the shows: a few characters made appearances in the miniseries and been basically removed ( Boxey disappeared and Jolly died ); there are no cute robot dogs here; some skin color or sex changes have been performed on characters carried over; an acting President of the surviving civilian government was added; Baltar, in the original series a twisted genius who turns on humanity to help the Cylons, is now nervous genius who doesn't quite know what he wants to do, with the added problem of having visions of his evil girlfriend in his head. And of course...there are the Cylons.

The Cylons we know of old still exist, as history. The current metal Cylons are tall, semi-skeletal, and don't talk much; they are much like Jim Cameron's Terminators. There are also a few Cylons who have evolved into human-robot hybrids, some of which don't know they are hybrids; the female hybrids can have babies, creating lots of things to ponder.

The original Cylon society basically followed Baltar's commands, until they got tired of him. The current Cylon society has much debate between the hybrids, since they now have their own religion and God-worship.

Many of the crisis points of the original series are in the current series, but in different order, or with a focus on different events. Examples: in the original series Commander Adama becomes ill, then the Cylons commit an attack where a Cylon raider crashes into the ship causing a fire that threatens to destroy the ship, at the same time Adama is undergoing surgery.

In the current series a fire threatens to destroy the ship, but that's in the miniseries; later Adama becomes 'ill' ( he's a victim of a shooting ), then the Cylons crash into the ship; there is no fire, but the Cylons survive the crash and attempt to commit mayhem.

Comparing this version to the original is like comparing apples to oranges. I hope people remember that BOTH apples and oranges can be enjoyable.
 44. I have a few problems with this series. First, there is very, very little science in it. Second, the storyline is almost preposterous. Third, it is full of irritating characters. Fourth, it is shot with hand-held, shaky cameras, only adding to the irritation. Fifth, it lacks a minimum of internal consistency, particularly on the technological side - they can do FTL jumps, but some of the equipment that they use (e.g. those clunky phones) was already obsolete twenty years ago. Sixth, the religious subplot is ridiculous, at best. Seventh, the main sexy character looks more like a cheap drag queen than a sexy woman (There is no accounting for tastes, although I am still unsure if she really is a woman?) Eighth, the story happens to take place in space, but for the most part it could happen just about anywhere - the space setup is very seldom used with any effectiveness or relevance. Ninth, too many of the characters are seriously mentally unstable. Tenth, the fighter pilots are depicted as a bunch of opinionated, immature cretins; I for one hope that real fighter pilots have more maturity than that. Eleventh, the story is very little more than a cheap soap opera, rather than a serious sci-fi show. Twelfth, the civilians in the flotilla seem to be, by and large, a collection of morons and/or crooks; it did not take me long to start rooting for the Cylons - at least until they started displaying some idiocy of their own. Thirteenth, the series is terribly pretentious; in fact it is just a soap opera.

I am very sorry about Edward James Olmos and Mary MacDonnell, two actors whose work I have enjoyed in the past. Mr. Olmos at least gets away with playing a character compelling at times, but Ms. MacDonnell's character is an utterly pathetic figure.

All in all, the only other recent series that to my recollection can compare to this, as far as how bad they are, is Star Trek Enterprise. They are both insults to what sci-fi is all about. In a nutshell: If you are into soap operas you'll enjoy this series. If you are into science-fiction, especially with an emphasis on the science side, you will probably hate it. If you are into both you will of course enjoy the former aspect, but you will probably not think much of the latter, of which there is very little.

 46. Yes, although it's producers call it a "reimagined" series, due to some slight differences. A battlestar is a very lage spaceship, kind of a cross between a battleship and an aircraft carrier. Cylons are humanoid robots created by mankind as servants and laborers. Eventually, they rebelled and declared war on their human masters. Miniseries - This 3 hour miniseries acts as a pilot for the weekly series and introduces the characters and situations.

Season 1 - Contains 13 episodes.

Season 2 - Contains 20 episodes.

Season 3 - Contains 20 episodes.

Battlestar Galactica: Razor - This 2 hour TV movie ( officially the first two episodes of Season 4 ) takes place during Season 2, with flashbacks to the miniseries and earlier, but should be viewed here.

Season 4, Part 1 - Contains 10 episodes ( also known as "Season 4.0" on DVD ).

Season 4, Part 2 - Contains 10 episodes ( also titled "Season 4.5" or "The Final Season" on DVD )

Battlestar Galactica : The Plan - This is a post-series prequel TV movie which depicted selected events of the miniseries and series from the Cylons point of view.

There are also two spin-off prequels:

Caprica - A 19 episode prequel series set 58 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica. The series deals with the creation of the Cylons, and stars Eric Stoltz as Daniel Greystone, creator of the Cylons, and Esai Morales as Joseph Adama, father of Battlestar's William Adama. Released on DVD ( and Blu-ray in certain territories ).

Battlestar Galactica : Blood & Chrome - A 2 hour prequel movie that is set during the first Cylon War, 40 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica and around 18 years after Caprica. The story follows a young William Adama ( future commander of the Galactica ) as a new recruit in the Colonial Fleet, and shows his first experience of battling the Cylons. Released on DVD and Blu-ray. Yes, the miniseries acts as a pilot, and sets up all of the events, characters, and themes of the series. If you start with episode S01E01, you will be very confused! a5c7b9f00b
