Metal Gear Solid 2 - Sons of Liberty

- Nastasha Romanenko was called in for the operation by her ex-husband Richard Ames from the DIA. He also seemed to be the one responsible for threatening and arresting Campbell. Campbell also seemed to have figured out that Richard Ames is a "Patriot", but it's not clear what this means.
- Nastasha would not have been allowed to walk away alive after the mission, but Richard couldn't bring himself to kill her and decided to let her go, knowing that she might end up exposing the truth behind Shadow Moses Island.
- Nastasha did release a book, explaining the truth, but the government obviously declared that it was a fabrication.

MGS2: Sons of Liberty
- This apparently takes place "two years ago" from Snake's narration, in the Hudson River. Snake and Otacon received classified intelligence about a new type of Metal Gear weapon being developed by the Marine Corps.
- Snake arrived at a tanker, and it seems Ocelot was watching from a helicopter, saying that he arrived right on time (it's probably a trap).
- After Shadow Moses Island, it seems Ocelot spread the data about the Metal Gear, so various other organizations could develop their own. The Marine Corps, however, seemed to have made a special one designed to beat all of the other Metal Gears.
- Snake needs to figure out where the tanker is headed, and take photographs of this Metal Gear.
- Snake and Otacon are part of Philanthropy, a fringe organization officially recognized by the UN that opposes Metal Gears.
- After Snake lands, it seems the ship was being hijacked by a group of armed soldiers that seem to be Russians.

- Snake finds the coordinates of the destination. It seems to be in the middle of the Atlantic, so Otacon suspects it's for testing the Metal Gear.
- A woman (Olga Gurlukovich) is on the phone, where a man tells her that Shalashaska has landed. She tells him that all entrances and exits to the tanker holds are secured.
- The man (apparently her father) demands for her to leave now that her mission is over, but she tries to refuse. She is apparently pregnant as well.
- Snake confronts the woman, and tries to hold her up, but she manages to escape and the two of them have a gunfight.

- Snake wins and takes her weapon, when he finds a Cypher watching him and flying away.
- Otacon identified the Russian man who seems to be leading the ship: Sergei Gurlukovich. One of Ocelot's contacts. The Cypher seems to be part of the Army, so it's getting complicated.
- Otacon reveals that he actually found out about the Metal Gear on the tanker from an anonymous tip. Otacon normally doesn't trust anonymous tips, but this one was signed EE, which reminded him of his stepsister, Emma Emmerich, who he hasn't seen for over 10 years. Otacon did hack into the Pentagon to confirm that the info was legit, however.

- As Snake approaches the holds, he finds three soldiers coming out. They called the leader to confirm they secured the holds, and the leader asked them to protect his daughter as well.
- They find Snake, but Snake beats them and enters the holds. Another soldier tries to stealthily follow Snake, and closes the door, but Ocelot (Shalashaska) arrives and kills him, implying that the colonel (Sergei Gurlukovich) will be joining him soon.

- Down in the holds, the Commandant is giving a speech to loads of Marines. They don't know the tanker ship has been hijacked.
- Ocelot tells Snake that he noticed that their communication is being monitored. It's unknown who is monitoring it, and they haven't tried to interfere or anything. Otacon switched the encryption protocol, but suggests that Snake send the photos through a computer in the area that he hacked.

- By the time Snake finished sending the photos to Otacon, the Commandant was wrapping up his speech. After that, they saw Ocelot walking to the front, and the Marines pointed their guns. But Sergei Gurlukovich appeared behind the Commandant, holding him at gunpoint, intending to use Metal Gear RAY to revive Russia.
- Sergei Gurlukovich was under the impression that Ocelot was selling the Metal Gear RAY to Russia, but Ocelot said that he was actually planning to return it to the "Patriots". The Commandant said it was the "la-li-lu-le-lo", and asked how it was possible.
- Gurlukovich asked if Ocelot was actually working with Solidus, to which Ocelot said he didn't care about Russia. Ocelot left Russia ever since the Cold War.
- Sergei Gurlukovich tried to resist, but Ocelot shot him. He shot a bunch of Russian soldiers too, and proceeded to blow up the entire ship, while he casually walked to Metal Gear RAY.
- Snake tried to pursue him, but it seems like Ocelot had Liquid's right arm. Liquid was able to take control over Ocelot's body.
- Liquid revealed that Naomi kept Snake safe from FOXDIE. Liquid points out how Snake is getting old.
- Ocelot/Liquid gets on the Metal Gear RAY, and leaves while the ship falls.
- As Ocelot leaves on the Metal Gear, he confirms that he has photographic evidence of Snake on the scene, thanks to the Cypher.

TANKER COMPLETE

- The incident was treated as terrorists blowing a hole from the tanker, and the entire area was sealed off by an oil fence. It was called Big Shell. Cleanup was still in progress.
- Armed forces from a special anti-terrorist Navy Seal group called Dead Cell took over Big Shell, and demanded 30B dollars (pretty sure there's more to it than money). There might be some Russian involvement too.
- They're demanding a lot because they have valuable hostages, including a leader of an important conservation group, and the president of the US (James Johnson).
- Otherwise, the terrorists will blow up Big Shell, which will not only engulf the harbor in flames, but would also lay an enormous level of toxic chemicals into the sea.
- Raiden's objective is to rescue the President and to disarm the terrorists.
- There is another group, Seal 10, trying to rescue the hostages, but they're landing from above, and are not working together with Raiden.
- Raiden noted that there was a hole in the fence, implying that somebody else got in before him.

- The sentries have Russian equipment, implying they might be Gurlukovich mercenaries.
- The sentries were knocked out by a single person (Snake!?).
- Mission control (saving and stuff) is handled by Rosemary, who seems to be close to Raiden and calls him Jack. She emphasizes that she prioritizes Raiden's life over the mission, and she demands to have access to all of Campbell's conversations with Raiden.
- Rose asks Raiden about whether he remembers the significance of tomorrow (April 30th), but he doesn't remember.

- Campbell explains that the terrorists call themselves "Sons of Liberty", and that their leader is "Solid Snake", who was believed to be dead after he blew up the tanker two years ago (thanks, Ocelot).
- Seal 10 landed on Struts B and C. President was seen in Strut B. Raiden is on Strut A of Shell One.
- Campbell intercepted communications with Seal 10. A team secured the President and the "package", but they were under attack.

- Raiden reaches Strut B, finds bloody corpses of Navy soldiers. A vampire-like person was dodging bullets, moving really fast, and killing the soldiers with a knife. He carved five lines on his chest for the five kills he made, before he pursued Raiden.
- A soldier with the terrorist outfit and Snake's voice started firing before VAMP could kill Raiden. VAMP engaged the soldier, but seemed to recognize his smell. VAMP gets a call from "Queen", who is in the central unit with the President. VAMP disappears while Raiden is about to fire.
- The soldier identifies himself as Lieutenant Pliskin, and reveals his face (yup, it's Snake). He claimed to have descended from a Navy chopper, but Raiden notices a bug coming out of him.  Likely from the area that Raiden entered through.
- Pliskin recognized the FOXHOUND outfit, but Raiden doesn't seem surprised. Raiden explained that he had extensive VR training, which Pliskin points out as mentally training soldiers to overcome the fear that arises in actual battle.
- When Pliskin saw the Navy captain with his blood sucked out, he seemed to get dizzy. He said it was probably his own blood loss.
- Pliskin explains that Vamp is a Romanian wizard of knives from Dead Cell. Dead Cell was an anti-terrorist group founded by the ex-President George Sears. They used to actually attack government complexes unannounced to train soldiers on dealing with an actual situation.
- Their original leader (President George Sears?) died in prison, and Dead Cell became more extreme. They ended up killing many people in their "accidents". They were destroyed six months ago, but three members remain: VAMP, Fortune and Fatman.
- Pliskin insists that Solid Snake died two years ago after blowing up the tanker, and his body was apparently identified too. Pliskin asks Raiden what his actual mission is, but Raiden is probably more clueless than Pliskin. He gives Raiden a lighter, though Raiden doesn't smoke.
- The Navy captain's radio got a call indicating that the Bravo team has the President between Strut B and C, but they're also under attack. Pliskin needs some time, but Raiden goes out.

- Raiden reaches the bridge, where Navy soldiers are trying to shoot at a woman. The soldiers think she is Fortune. Vamp meets her, addresses her as Queen, and picks up the President. The soldiers try to approach her, but she fires her giant gun to destroy the bridge.
- Campbell points out that Raiden's infiltration is still a success and that his top priority is to remove the C4s planted on Big Shell, since the toxic spill is more important that the President. Raiden wonders if this was all a setup (of course it was), but Campbell doesn't say anything more.
- Raiden arrives at Strut C to meet Peter Stillman, the bomb disposal expert with Team Bravo. Pliskin arrives too, noting how Stillman is really famous at bomb disposal. He retired after a church exploded, however.
- Stillman says that the bombs were planted by Fatman, who was his student, that he was so attached to that he considered Fatman to be like his son. He gave instructions to Raiden and Pliskin on detecting Fatman's C4s, combining the C4 scent with Fatman's own cologne (based on Fatman's strict principles), and explained how to disarm Fatman's C4s by freezing them. Pliskin heads to Shell 2 while Raiden deals with Shell 1.
- Stillman mentioned there was a skinny engineer with him. He didn't seem to die from the explosion, so his location is unknown.
- Stillman points out that Pliskin is definitely not from the Navy. Pliskin's quotes contained traces of Marine Corps and British Special Air Service.
- Campbell states that he wasn't aware of an engineer being in Team Bravo. It must have been decided by the Navy.

- While disarming bombs, Stillman points out that the bomb locations are really poor choices for blowing up Big Shell. He suspects there's something wrong.
- When approaching the EF connecting bridge, Raiden gets a call from an unknown "fan" warning him about Claymore mines (just like Deepthroat in Twin Snakes). He also tried calling himself Deepthroat here, then changed it to Mr. X when Raiden made the connection. Campbell is confident that it couldn't be Gray Fox, and noted that the call came from within Big Shell itself, so it might be an enemy trap.
- When approaching the roof of Strut E, Raiden hears Olga talking on the phone. She said she faced a cyborg ninja with a sword. She also said she saw somebody hiding in a box, which alarmed the listener, and he decided to lay a trap on the connecting bride to Shell 2.
- Raiden points his gun at Olga and demands her to drop hers, but she jumps into the river.

- As the bomb hunt continues, Pliskin calls Stillman and tells him that he found a set of C4s at the bottom of Strut H that was not detected by the sensor. Stillman is alarmed, and realizes that unlike the other C4s we found, this set is actually intended for blowing up Big Shell.
- Stillman predicts that there is another invisible bomb at the bottom of Strut A, since the detonations at both these locations would be sufficient. Stillman decided to run to Strut H to check the first invisible bomb while instructing Pliskin and Raiden to continue their disarming of the small bombs. Stillman reveals that his supposedly prosthetic leg was an act, and was actually his real leg. His failure to prevent the church explosion made him ashamed to face the victims, and so he pretended to be a victim as well. And since he also taught Fatman all his skills without nurturing his conscience, he was overwhelmed with guilt and felt compelled to stop Fatman here.
- Stillman noted that the invisible bomb was detected by a second sensor he designed, but it was less effective as it relied on sound only (no radar visuals). The odorless technology and absence of Fatman's cologne confirmed that Fatman anticipated Stillman's involvement from the beginning and played a clever trap. Stillman left a second copy of the second sensor in Strut C where he was hiding before.
- Raiden disarmed all of the small bombs on Shell One and returned to Strut C to find the second sensor. Pliskin only had one small bomb left to disarm. Stillman observed that the detonator for the invisible Strut H bomb was not activated, and couldn't figure out how it worked. Pliskin proceeded to disarm the last small bomb when Stillman realized what happened. Disarming all twelve bombs caused the detonator for the invisible bombs to activate, with 400 seconds on the clock.

- Raiden rushed to Strut A, and as he was taking the elevator down, Stillman called and indicated that he screwed up. Fatman left a microwave proximity trap that accelerated the timer when Stillman got too close. Fatman surpassed Stillman at this point. With less than 30 seconds left, he demanded Pliskin to stay away from Shell Two and told Raiden to disarm the Strut A invisible bomb at a distance. An explosion was heard, and both Stillman and Pliskin disconnected.
- Campbell reported that the Shell Two bomb caused a flood, but thankfully did not release the toxins into the sea. Raiden's next objective is to rescue the President.

- On the way out, Raiden encountered Fortune. Before she saw his face, she described how happy she was to know he was alive, asking him to finish her like he finished off her father. But her surprise on Raiden's face indicated that she was expecting someone else (Snake?). She explained how she is lucky in war, but nothing else, and pleads Raiden to kill her... while she tries to kill him as well.
- During the one-sided fight (all bullets towards Fortune move away from her), Campbell called Raiden, saying that Fatman contacted them directly, asking to meet Raiden at the heliport. He left a bomb there too, with a countdown of 400 seconds.
- Vamp arrived, telling Fortune that Fatman is out of control and plans to blow the place up, which would "unravel their plans". He said Fatman lost sight of their ideals and his loyalty to "Commander Jackson". Fortune was already disappointed by Raiden's failure to kill, so she left to take care of Fatman while Vamp remains to deal with Raiden. But Raiden fires at Fortune as she is leaving, and the bullet moves around and hits Vamp instead.
- Fortune cries over Vamp's body, lamenting at how everyone around her dies while she stays alive, blaming her father for it. Raiden takes this opportunity to head to the elevator. Vamp wakes up, saying that he died once already, and can't die twice.

- Raiden disarms the bomb on the heliport. Fatman arrives, ready for the duel.
- Raiden tells him that if he blows up Big Shell, he'll never get the 30 billion dollars. Fatman laughs (realizing that Raiden doesn't have a clue what's going on), and explains that he just wants to be the most famous bomber. He already beat the legendary Stillman, and is now planning on a grander catastrophe.
- Before dying, Fatman activated a final bomb. Raiden found the bomb under Fatman's body and defused it. Campbell congratulated Raiden and told him that he should now focus on rescuing the President.
- Raiden gets a call from Pliskin, who apparently survived thanks to a friend. Shell Two seems to be a mess, but Pliskin knows never heard about any toxin risk (obviously not real). Raiden asked about the hostages, but Pliskin said they're not in Shell Two. He also didn't seem to care about them, confirming that his objective was not related to the hostages.

- A cyborg ninja with a sword confronts Raiden. His costume looks a bit similar to Gray Fox's, but his body shape is different.
- The ninja says he is neither an enemy nor a friend, but is a messenger from the la-li-lu-le-lo (Patriots?). He was ordered to provide backup for Raiden, and provide necessary intel. He said that there is a secret service agent named Ames (Richard?) among the hostages in the core who should know the President's current location. Ames is the head of the president's security detail.
- The ninja doesn't know how Ames looks, or even the gender. But he knows that Ames has a pacemaker, so Raiden should use a directional microphone (somewhere in the core) to identify Ames. He also gives Raiden a Lv2 security card and a uniform for the security members of the core. But soldiers in the core should also have an AK-74u. There is a retinal scan at some point.
- The ninja also explains that Big Shell isn't a cleanup plant (of course) and is actually housing a Metal Gear. The handcuff on the Navy captain carried one half of the launch code, while the other is in the case with the President. The ninja also gives Raiden a cell phone but doesn't explain its purpose.
- Campbell claims to know nothing about the Metal Gear but said he'll look into the rumor.

- At some point, Rose tells Raiden about the info she dug up about Solid Snake. His corpse was exhumed for DNA testing and confirmed to be "Solid Snake", but the right arm was missing (must've been Liquid's body).
- Raiden makes it to the hostage room, and finds Richard Ames. He said he learned of Ames from a cyborg ninja, and Ames seemed to have understood the situation. Ames said he was with the la-li-lu-le-lo, not the Secret Service. Ocelot seems to be watching through a camera, and listening from elsewhere, but Ames switched to codec communication so Ocelot couldn't hear anything.
- The President is in the core of Shell 2. Ames didn't hear of other hostages being shot (Campbell made it up?). Ames explains that the launch code actually requires the President's physiological data. He needs to be calm and willing to input the code, and he also needs to reconfirm the code in an hour.
- The entire tanker accident and oil spill (so there was actually an oil spill after all?) was planned, to specifically set up Big Shell for Metal Gear. The inspection tour (not a tourism tour) was to check its progress.

- Somebody else arrived outside, which Ames identified as "Snake". Through the microphone, Raiden was able to hear the conversation.
- Ocelot wonders why Fatman betrayed them, and would look into his background. King is more worried about the man in the Sneaking Suit (Raiden?). King said FOXHOUND was disbanded years ago, so the Sneaking Suit must be from the Patriots.
- Ocelot confirms that Shell 2 is flooding, and King orders that the pathway connecting the two Shells should be sealed. Ocelot says IR sensors and Semtex are already in place. He also said there is no effect on "it" (Metal gear? something else?).
- Ocelot said the President entered the code, and they need to keep him alive for another hour until he reconfirms. The King also asked about activating "the unit" (something other than Metal Gear?), and Ocelot said it is almost complete. He's waiting for "the girl" (Olga?) to start the system. "The drugs took care of everything". The King said it's only a few more steps to "Outer Heaven" (reviving Big Boss's dream?)
- Olga arrives, asking Ocelot who the cyborg ninja is. Ocelot doesn't know, and King is looking into it.
- Olga seems to suspect Ocelot, since he watched her father die (he actually killed him, heh). He said he was best friends with Sergei, but Olga doesn't buy it and said he'll shoot him if he sells them out.
- They pointed guns at each other, but King tells them to stop. He took both of them in when no one else would. They shouldn't turn against each other since they have nowhere else to go. Olga leaves.
- Ocelot's arm is reacting, which King pointed out is the best transplant surgery in the world, performed in Lyon. Ocelot doesn't trust the French, but he's curious of why the arm reacts more often than usual. He suspects it's because of "that man" (Snake/Pliskin?).

- Raiden asks if the King is really Snake, which Ames said is what he calls himself. He suggests that there might be two Snakes (another clone? Solidus?).
- Back to codec, Ames said he anticipated the President's betrayal, probably tired of being a puppet. He said they will activate the warhead soon. Ames also confirms there was never any 30B dollar ransom, and that the terrorists' objective was to fire the warhead from the start.
- Their objective is not a mass slaughter though. They plan to use the warhead to cause some electronic interference that will cause all electronic objects in an area to go offline. They want Manhattan to go offline and "liberate" it into some kind of republic.

- Ocelot walks in, and asks about Raiden and Ames. Ames claimed he was ill and asked the soldier to remove the tape and blindfold. Ocelot knew he was lying, knowing who Ames was. Ames must have been sent to watch over the President whose betrayal was anticipated.
- Ocelot seemed ready to kill Ames, but Ames seemed to suffer a heart attack of sorts (FOXDIE?). Both Ames and Ocelot seemed surprised at it, with Ames saying "you tricked me", "I understand now", "Ocelot...".
- Ocelot asked which unit Raiden was in, demanding him to remove his mask. Ocelot recognizes Raiden, while the other soldiers have their guns ready, but the Cyborg Ninja jumps in to save Raiden. Ocelot seems surprised, saying that the ninja already died (he thinks it was Gray Fox when it isn't?). Raiden escapes.

- Raiden removes the IR lasers on the connecting bridge to Shell Two, when he gets a call from Pliskin. Pliskin said he found a Kasatka, and is bringing it to Shell One. His friend, shown to be Otacon, is piloting it. It'll take two trips for him to rescue the hostages.
- Raiden calls Campbell, demanding to know who Pliskin and his friend are, since he recognizes the name Otacon from Shadow Moses. Campbell says he has no clue, but points out that Snake and Otacon are "terrorists" in a sense, destroying countless Metal Gears. Raiden defends tries to defend them, saying they must have some kind of courage or ideals to do what they're doing. In any case, Campbell insists that Snake is dead, with his body being DNA tested (obviously Liquid's corpse). Raiden also points out that a dead Snake can't be the leader of the terrorists at Big Shell either.
- Raiden then sees the Kasatka with Pliskin, flying towards Shell One. But he also sees the terrorist leader waiting for him at the entrance to Shell Two. Raiden looks familiar to him, but he can't seem to recall where he saw him before. He claims to be the Boss that surpasses Big Boss himself, and calls himself Solid Snake.
- Pliskin then yells out that this leader is NOT Solid Snake, and the Kasatka flies back. Pliskin tries to attack him, but he dodges. He addresses Pliskin as "brother" and "Snake", while the game introduces him as Solidus Snake.
- Solidus enhances his body and avoids Pliskin's attacks. He falls down, but is then lifted by the Harrier, piloted by Vamp. Solidus gets on the Harrier, while Pliskin gives Raiden a Stinger Missile Launcher, since the Kasatka is no match for the Harrier.

- After taking out the Harrier, it falls into the water. But then the Metal Gear Ray surfaces, rescuing the Harrier. It also fires some missiles to damage the bridge.
- Solidus's left eye seems injured/lost. Solidus tells Vamp (who was also in the Harrier) to go, and Vamp runs on water and runs up the vertical cylinder as well.
- On codec, Raiden asks Snake (identity pretty much confirmed at this point) why he keeps coming back to all this fighting despite being free to do what he wants, unlike Raiden who is only following orders. Snake quoted Gray Fox's dying quote about how they're not tools for the government or anyone else. Fighting is all he is good at, but at least he fights for what he believes in.
- Otacon also confirms that they stole Liquid's body to act as Snake's corpse.
- Snake and Otacon are fighting for change, on their own, not on anyone's orders. Otacon seems to have a personal motive, however. The terrorists seem to have his sister (Emma Emmerich?) in the Big Shell.
- Campbell points out that even though the Metal Gear is active, their priority is still to save the President and stop the nuclear launch. Raiden tries to bring up Snake, but Campbell insists that Snake has no relevance to this mission and Raiden should stay focused on saving the President. Campbell considers Nastasha's book on Shadow Moses as a piece of trash too.

- Raiden makes his way to the core of Shell Two, when he eavesdrops on Olga communicating with Ocelot. Ocelot said Snake was in Shell 1, and Olga wanted to rush to kill him. But Ocelot reminded her that the launch takes priority.
- Olga told Ocelot to turn on the electrified floor, ensuring that no one can get in unless the circuit panel next to president is destroyed.
- She also reminded Ocelot that she's leaving for Russia after this, and talking half the money, as part of the agreement. (So there is a ransom involved after all?).

- Raiden meets the President, who thought Raiden was sent to kill him. He seemed surprised that Raiden was a male. Raiden said he was from FOXHOUND, and the President seemed to understand.
- Over nanocommunication, the President explained that the US is completely controlled by the "Patriots", and democracy was just a show. The President is just a figurehead selected by the Patriots. All key decisions are made by a group of twelve men, known as the Wisemen's Committee.
- The previous President, George Sears aka Solidus Snake, set up the events of Shadow Moses Island, developing Metal Gear REX in opposition to the Patriots. Ocelot goaded Liquid to start the rebellion under Solidus's orders, and was able to gain control of REX and the nuclear warhead data. However, this caused the existence of Rex to be known, so the Patriots reacted.
- The Patriots had George Sears "resign", replacing him with James Johnson. George Sears was supposed to be killed (disguised as an illness), but he was able to escape, and managed to regain control of Dead Cell.
- Metal Gear RAY was hijacked two years ago by Ocelot from the Marines. After that, the Patriots started developing Arsenal Gear.
- The entire Big Shell was actually a big "weapon", Arsenal Gear. Aside from being an impregnable fortress with nuclear launch capabilities, it has full control over the military network, and also has the GQ system, which allows the Patriots to manipulate the flow of digital information and control the "truth" to the rest of the world however they see fit. It's also protected by a horde of mass-produced Metal Gear RAYs.
- The President sided with the terrorists because he wanted to use it as a bargaining chip to join the Patriots. He considers the Patriots to be a necessary evil, since their absence would leave a void in the political structure and would have disastrous consequences. However, Solidus's objective is to oppose the Patriots (instead of wanting to join them, like the President). By unleashing the nuclear blast over Wall Street, the Patriots would lose control over the business community.
- The President requested Raiden to find Emma Emmerich, since she's the system programmer for Arsenal Gear. He also gave Raiden a disk that could be loaded to the main system and release a new form of FOXDIE.
- The President also told Raiden to kill him to avoid the nuclear strike, but Raiden refused. Ocelot came and killed President anyway, and then left, calling Raiden the "carrier boy". (Maybe Ocelot is actually working for the Patriots?)

- Raiden contacted Snake, who wasn't sure why Ocelot killed the President. Maybe they found a better weapon within Arsenal Gear. Snake knew about Arsenal Gear all along.
- Snake also explained what happened two years ago, with Colonel Gurlukovich hijacking the tanked. The raiding party included Olga, Ocelot and "a man that was supposed to be dead" (Liquid?).
- The Marines were developing Metal Gear RAY to secretly oppose the Patriots, but the Patriots stole it from them. The Patriots also wanted to smear Snake's name, after he became famous as a legendary hero from Shadow Moses, which they never intended. Then the Patriots set up Big Shell to act as a cleanup facility while secretly developing Arsenal Gear.
- Given that Ocelot carried out the Patriots' plans two years ago, he seems to be loyal to the Patriots and not to Solidus.

- As Raiden swims through the flooded Core B1, he gets a call from Otacon who says that Emma is afraid of water. She used to love swimming when they were kids, but then their father drowned and she nearly drowned as well. She believed Otacon would save her, since the pool is visible from his room, but he seemed to be distracted with something else. Emma thought Otacon blamed himself and left her, and she couldn't swim since then, according to her mother Julie.
- Raiden also finds Stillman's corpse in the wreckage underwater.
- Raiden meets Vamp, who says that Emma was still alive, but she was of no use to them except as bait. Vamp thinks Raiden killed the President but explains that it wouldn't prevent a nuclear strike, since Arsenal gear is also equipped with a purified hydrogen bomb. It was a project initiated by the current President, but Solidus has no idea of its existence. Since it's still experimental, the bomb becomes launch-capable as soon as Arsenal is activated.
- Vamp explains how six months ago, they lost everything they believed in. They weren't actually responsible for the mass murder, but they were portrayed as the culprits. The public believed every word, which is why they now want to destroy this world of deceit. He seems to be referring to eliminating the Patriots, but doesn't quite mention them.
- Arsenal became ready for operation, so most soldiers started boarding Arsenal. Vamp knows about the virus program that Raiden has, but said he won't live long enough to install it anyway.

- Raiden defeats Vamp, and heads to save Emma, who was hiding in a locker. She thinks he might be an enemy, but he communicates to her by codec, which convinces her that he's a good guy.
- She's scared of water, but Raiden convinces her to grab on to him and listen to his heartbeat while he swims. She also took off her glasses, which she doesn't actually need, but they reminded her of someone important (Otacon?).
- Riding on Raiden's back reminded her of Otacon, and they used to be really close. She then talked to Otacon in codec, and Otacon started scolding her, asking her why she got involved with Metal Gear. She said she want to hurt Otacon and see him suffer after he abandoned her.

- Raiden shows Emma the disc, and she said it was her own program. She asks what happened to the President and Raiden tells her he's dead. She explains that this program is a kind of virus that could render GW useless. She was the one who created GW. GW can control the flow of information on a global scale. The memory capacity and lifespan of humans are very limited, so digital information would dominate and establish the truth of the future. For example, the Patriots apparently hid the existence of 60 thousand genes, leading people to believe there were only 40 thousand genes when there were actually 100 thousand. Research reports were manipulated accordingly.
- The Y2K problem caused governments to spread programs to all computers over the world. Though they were installed to solve the Y2K problem, they also contained another hidden sub-program from the Patriots. Every OS after that also carried the same sub-program, so the Patriots could control them all once GW is active. This might be why Solidus wants to eliminate all electronic devices in Manhattan.
- GW still lacks the necessary factors for judging situations though, so there was supposed to be a major experiment in the next few days to provide GW with complex data to study.
- Emma asks Raiden about her parrot, which he saw in the Computer Room, and assures her that the parrot is safe.

- As they reach the bottom of Strut L, Emma and Raiden witness the beautiful sunset. Emma walks through the bridge to Shell One, while Raiden provides cover. Snake arrives later and helps too.
- When Emma is near the end, Vamp arrives and grabs her. Raiden is able to snipe him out, but she was already stabbed. Snake retrieves her while Raiden follows.
- By the time Raiden reaches the Computer Room, Emma already had everything set up so that Raiden could just insert the disc in. The virus starts installing, but stops at 90%, when an antibody agent appears on screen.
- Emma asks if everything is alright, and Otacon says it is. She was happy that she did not add another page to the family's dark history. She explains that she actually wanted to see Otacon again, and that she made Arsenal Gear so she could be closer to him. She actually wanted him to see her as a woman, but he couldn't. Her final request was for him to call her Emma (instead of EE), as she takes off his glasses in her dying breath.
- A crying Otacon reveals the reason why he left her in the first place. He was actually in a relationship with Emma's mother (Julie). His father found out, and killed himself; the drowning was not an accident. Otacon takes her parrot, who repeats the words it heard from Emma.
- It was announced that Arsenal Gear was ready to launch, so Big Shell would be flooded. Snake entrusts Otacon to rescue the hostages. Otacon realizes that he would have to leave his sister's corpse here. Snake and Otacon perform their special handshake and Otacon leaves.
- Once alone, Otacon listens to the parrot repeating his sister's words that she misses him, and he breaks down in tears. He realizes that people shouldn't just be wishing for a happy family, but that they need to go out and make it happen.
- Snake returns the disc to Raiden, but they need to find a way to get into Arsenal Gear. Snake calls out to the Ninja. Raiden wonders why Snake is changing sides, to which Snake said "I never said I was on yours." The ninja reveals her face as Olga, and knocks Raiden out.

- Raiden wakes up to hear Ocelot saying there are no traces of Raiden's identity anywhere, but Solidus recognizes him. Solidus explains that Raiden is his "son", a child soldier recruited when he was barely ten who became a platoon leader of a small boy unit. His amazing feats earned him nicknames like White Devil and Jack the Ripper. Solidus is his godfather, but Jack went missing later, which Solidus now realizes must have been the Patriots recruiting Jack.
- Solidus says that Arsenal Gear will proceed as planned, demonstrating its might to the world. Ocelot points out that Solidus is the splitting image of Big Boss, especially with the eyepatch he now wears, thanks to Raiden.
- Solidus leaves Ocelot alone with Raiden, who asks where he is. Ocelot says they're obviously in Arsenal Gear, but they're also in the memory of Shadow Moses. He says he'll be taking the optical disk. Olga arrives, and he leaves her with him.
- Olga communicates with Raiden by codec, explaining that after the incident two years ago, she joined an organization that turned out to be under the Patriots. Her child was also born in a hospital under the Patriots and they took her child away. She had to submit to the Patriots to guarantee the child's safety.
- As for Snake, she actually fought him in Big Shell, and then learned that he wasn't responsible for her father's death, but was actually responsible for saving her and her comrades. She's working with him for mutual gain. As for Raiden, she needs him to succeed as its necessary for the Patriot's project: the S3 plan, but she does not elaborate.
- While Raiden is restrained, Rose calls him. Raiden confirms that Solidus was telling the truth. Although his memory is fuzzy, he's been having nightmares about his past. That's why he is scared of the night, and afraid to let Rose get too close. He had to kill others for his own survival while their food was spiked with gunpowder containing drugs to control them. Rose says that she still loves and accepts him for who she is, and is willing to share his burden.

- After Raiden is released, Campbell calls him and tells him to focus on the mission and forget Snake. It starts to get really weird, with Campbell saying this is like a role-playing game.
- While Raiden is sneaking around, he keeps getting pestered by Campbell, who calls him with all sorts of weird messages, including references to past games, breaking the fourth wall, video clips of Mei Ling and other stuff, and even the radar being replaced by a video clip of a Japanese woman.
- Eventually, Rose calls, revealing that she was actually a Spy for the Patriots all along. Their meeting was not a coincidence, and even her physical appearance was designed to appeal to him. She's been watching his every move, and reporting to the Patriots. However, she insists that although her actions were based on her orders, she still did genuinely fall in love with him.

- Snake meets Raiden, explaining that he was used as bait to get into Arsenal Gear. He heard from Olga that there are about 25 Metal Gear RAY units. He didn't tell Raiden about Olga earlier because he never asked. He also gave Raiden a sword from Olga.
- Raiden asks Snake about whether he ever felt joy in killing. Snake pointed out that they're not killing for the sake of killing, but Raiden thinks he could only say that because he's a legend, a hero, so people would only remember the good parts. Snake emphasizes that there are no good parts to murder, and they're not fighting to make a name for themselves. They're fighting for a future, and even if Raiden feels like his life is a mistake, he can fix that with his own actions starting right now. He tells Raiden to find something to believe in on his own, and to pass it on to the future.
- Otacon calls Raiden, telling him that he's safe with the hostages. Raiden asks him to check into Campbell, because of the weird messages.
- Otacon later calls back, saying that Campbell's transmissions are coming from Arsenal Gear itself. The encryption protocol is identical to the GW AI. This Campbell was actually constructed from GW's AI based on Raiden's own perceptions. Raiden starts to panic, but Snake reminds him that him and Raiden are both real in the flesh, so they should focus on their mission and move forward.

- After Snake and Raiden take out a bunch of enemies, Fortune appears, seeking revenge against Snake for killing her father. Snake says that he wasn't the one who killed her father, but she doesn't believe him, and seeks to be killed by him. Raiden decides to move ahead on his own.
- Raiden arrives at a large octagonal area, where he hears Solidus's voice, explaining that Ocelot found out about the S3 plan from GW. S3 stands for Solid Snake Simulation, a development program to reproduce Solid Snake, the perfect warrior. This created a FOXHOUND commando (when FOXHOUND no longer exists) shaped by VR regimen: Raiden. But Solidus made use of Raiden's appearance. He realized that the Patriots must have infiltrated his ranks, so he used Raiden as bait to smoke out their agent (Olga?). He no longer needs Raiden, so he sends Metal Gear RAYs to take him out.
- After defeating five Metal Gear RAYs, Raiden gets tired. Olga arrives to defend him, saying that his vital signs are being transmitted to the Patriots, and that his survival is required for her child's survival. Solidus now understands why Olga betrayed him and her comrades (who she actually considers as her family, actually), and proceeds to attack her.
- Solidus kills Olga in front of Raiden, and prepares to kill Raiden as well, when the Metal Gear RAYs start to react. Ocelot calls and informs him that there seems to be some kind of virus attacking the GW system, undoubtedly the Patriot's doing. Arsenal Gear is now on an emergency ascent course. Solidus destroys several Metal Gear RAYs and captures Raiden, saying he now has some use. Fortune arrives too, with a captured Snake.

- When Raiden wakes up, he hears Solidus saying that GW's AI has been corrupted beyond repair. He instead tortures Raiden for answers. Fortune says that he doesn't know anything, but Solidus says it's not him he wants answers from.
- Fortune says she has some business to attend to, which Solidus says was to hijack Arsenal Gear. He used Ocelot to suggest the idea to her in the first place. He was planning to give her Arsenal Gear to begin with. As powerful as Arsenal Gear is, it cannot stand up to a large force without support. Seizing Arsenal Gear was never his objective: his objective was only to get the names of the Patriots. Since they were using GW to control the flow of information, it would have known about the identities of the Wisemen's Committee.
- But GW's destruction messed up his plans, but he says there is still another way. Either way, Fortune intends to take Arsenal Gear and fire the hydrogen bomb to take out their power source regardless, and Solidus says he won't stop her.
- Ocelot laughs, and reveals that all of this was scripted as an exercise. The S3 plan wasn't limited to VR training. Solidus's own plans were scripted, and this entire incident is a recreation of Shadow Moses. Ames' nanomachines shut down his pacemaker, causing a heart attack, a ninja appears to assist Raiden, a disc containing the digital version of FOXDIE, etc, were all orchestrated by the Patriots. The President realized what was going on, but still ended up fulfilling his role. The virus was intended to eliminate all information about the Patriots from GW all along.
- Fatman was actually with the Patriots, as an examiner for Raiden of sorts. They had to arrange for Stillman to arrive in order to convince Fatman to cooperate.
- This exercise demonstrated that anybody can be shaped into Solid Snake. Even rookies can fight like men of experience. This whole incident provides enough data to create this perfect simulation. Solidus and Raiden were selected since their relationship resembles that of Snake and Big Boss. Dead Cell represents FOXHOUND. Two years ago, when Ocelot sank the tanker, the plan was already underway. Dead Cell taking the blame for the incident six months ago, while letting them know it was the Patriots who manipulated the truth, was all intentional, to let them seek vengeance. The only thing that wasn't orchestrated was the appearance of the real Solid Snake, and Ocelot was wondering who it was that sent for him.

- Fortune tries to turn against Ocelot, but he shoots her straight on the left side of her chest. The bullet was not deflected. Ocelot explains that all of the bullet deflection moments were due to an advanced electromagnetic shield that the Patriots developed. She was their puppet all along, just like Olga.
- Fortune, however, was able to resist, since her heart is actually on the right side of her chest. However, her own attack is deflected, since Ocelot is now the one protected by the electromagnetic shield. Solidus tries to attack Ocelot too, but they are all deflected while Ocelot gets on a Metal Gear RAY. He now has enough data, and only needs to retrieve Arsenal, and clean up the remnants of the exercise.
- Solidus tries to resist Metal Gear RAY's attacks. One of the bullets that Solidus deflects hits Snake's handcuffs, weakening them. Fortune stands forward, and somehow deflects RAY's missiles, despite lacking the electromagnetic shield. She dies protecting the others.
- Ocelot tries to fire a big attack, when his arm reacts. Liquid was in the arm all along, waiting for the right time to awaken. It was Liquid who leaked information to Otacon about Arsenal Gear, since Snake was the only one who could free Liquid. He seems to know where the Patriots are too, thanks to selecting Ocelot as the host.
- But Liquid says there's room for only one Snake and one Big Boss. Solidus tries to attack, but his attacks are deflected again. Liquid gets on the Metal Gear RAY and dives into the river. Snake breaks free of his restraints and jumps after him.

- Big Arsenal crashes, and Raiden wakes up with Solidus Snake. It's April 30th now, the 200th anniversary of George Washington's presidency. This was the day that Solidus was planning to declare a new independence, free from the Patriots' rule. Solidus wanted to take back things like freedom, civil rights, and opportunities that were now controlled by the Patriots.
- Solidus also points out how humans are mortal, and pass their genes and information to their offspring. But the Big Boss clones could not reproduce, and have no heirs. All Solidus wants is to be remembered. But the Patriots even want to control digital information, and seek to erase Solidus's existence. Instead of being an intron of history, he wants to be remembered as an extron. He wants to overcome the Patriots and liberate them all from their grip, hence the "Sons of Liberty".

- Raiden gets a call from... Campbell? GW may be destroyed but supposedly the 200 years of America's independence generated a kind of consciousness building up to represent the discipline and morality of America. They explained how the mapping of the human genome allowed advances into genetic engineering that could digitize life itself. But there are other information not covered by genetics, like memories, ideas, culture and history. These were preserved by human records, but not all of them are passed on. It's a form of selection not very different from how genes are passed on.
- But in the current digitized world, trivial information is accumulating at an alarming rate, and are preserved. All this junk data would only slow down social progress, reducing the rate of evolution. This "Campbell" is not trying to control content, but to create context. As it is, numerous untested "truths" arising from various interests are accumulating in the sandbox of political correctness and value systems. All this information needs to be filtered out to stimulation the evolution of the species. They will wade through the sea of garbage produced by the people, retrieve valuable truths and interpret their meaning for later generations. Humans can't really make such decisions by themselves, since their actions are based on whatever is convenient for them.
- The S3 Plan does not stand for Solid Snake Simulation. It's the Selection for Societal Sanity. It controls human will and consciousness. It is a method, a protocol that created a circumstance that made Raiden who he is. This exercise showed that S3 would be able to trigger, control, and solve an extreme incident similar to Shadow Moses.
- Jack was chosen among Solidus's children because he was the only one who refused to remember the past. He only looks out for himself, even if he claims it was for someone else's sake. He never made a conscious attempt to reach out to Rose. Raiden is a perfect representative of the masses they needed to protect.
- The final exercise is Raiden vs Solidus. If Raiden dies, Olga's child dies. Rose would also die. Solidus wants Raiden dead too. Will it be Solidus - the Patriot's Creation, or Raiden - Solidus's Creation?

- Solidus revealed that he was the one who killed Raiden's parents, and raised him to be a soldier. He needed to know whether they were really someone else's creation. Jack has every reason to despise Solidus and seek vengeance.
- He also wants to kill him because his nanomachines would have clues to the Patriots and throughout the neural network they formed.
- Raiden defeats Solidus, and his body falls on the statue of George Washington.
- Raiden wonders who he is, when Snake arrives and tells him that it doesn't matter whether his memories and burdens were real or not. Reality is subjective. He tells Raiden that they can spread to other people what they had faith in, what they found important enough to believe in. Raiden may not have had much freedom of choice here, but he can start over in a new slate, and choose his own legacy.
- Raiden picks up the Dog Tags hanging around his neck (with Kojima's name!) and throws them away, saying that he'll pick his own name and life.
- Snake said he'll find Olga's child, who should be safe as long as Raiden is alive. Snake also said he was able to track Liquid using a transmitter on his RAY, but Ocelot was probably given a bogus location to begin with.
- However, Snake has a disc with the list of all the Patriots. This one is coded to destroy only a specific part of GW, containing the information on the Patriots' identities. Raiden wants to join Snake to find the Patriots, but Snake says that Raiden has other things to do.
- Raiden meets Rose, who is carrying his child. He asks who he is, and she says they'll find out together. She wants Raiden to see her for who she is.
- April 30th was the day he met her. Raiden says he'll not only pass his genes on to the baby, but also teach the baby about the environment, ideas, culture, etc.

Post-credits
- Snake talks about how we can leave more than our DNA through digital media to preserve our experiences and history.
- Snake asks Otacon about the Patriots' list. There was a name which was of one of their biggest contributors. The twelve men of the Wisemen's committee were in Manhattan, but they're all already dead, since about a hundred years ago.
