- He grinned. The American had revealed himself. “Open fire!” Choi pointed at the door and his men obeyed, opening up with their assault rifles on full automatic.
- The wood shredded under the brutal hail of bullets, destroying everything on the far side – including, Choi hoped, the American. His orders were to take the assassin alive if possible, but his intentions were otherwise. This man had made a fool of him by surviving and Choi would only be satisfied if he could repay that with murder.
- Glass shattered on the other side of the door and Choi heard shouting outside. The assassin had gone through the window and escaped. He took a breath to call out for the shooting to stop and a foul chemical stink filled his nostrils.
- Gas! He could smell gas, the odorous reek from a split canister like those used to fuel common cooking stoves. “Cease–!”
- Choi’s order came too late to prevent his eager soldiers from firing hot rounds into the other room, and a random ricochet lit off in a spark of combustion. The gas from the metal tank ignited with a rolling chug and a ball of fire bloomed inside the farmhouse. Overpressure rammed Choi off his feet and into a dining table, as the brief blast blew out a piece of the farmhouse’s roof and collapsed part of the exterior wall.
