	the first time her parents argued in front of her was the first time she had trouble falling asleep. she was eight years old at the time - a tiny, oblivious girl, watching with teary eyes as her mother and father screamed obscenities at each other at the top of their lungs. she doesn't quite remember how it went, but she knew it had something to do with her mother having to move to osaka after finding a better job there. her father clearly hated the idea but had no say in it as her mother left a week later, a tiny, oblivious yukioka following right behind her. it was confusing to yuki - why wasn't her father coming along? her mother wouldn't even let her speak to him over the phone. she'd cried, night after night, wasting away the hours she could have been using to sleep.

	she was nine by the time her father showed up at their door unexpectedly, begging for her mother to take him back. her father had changed, yuki knew, and it wasn't for the better. she grew afraid of him, though she hated admitting it. her mother, so strong but so forgiving, gave in to him with the hope that they'd finally live like a normal, happy family. the day yukioka found out that that hope could never come true was on her tenth birthday - the first time she saw her father hit her mother. it was a swift slap to the face - the physical effects not lasting for more than a day, but the damage to yuki's heart and mind irreversible. the abuse didn't stop there. day after day, her father would come home, intoxicated beyond belief, and yell. it wasn't quite the yelling that got to yuki. it was more the sound of her mother's sobs as she took on hit after hit from the cruel man she now refuses to call her father.

	sleep quickly became a thing of the past. the more she heard her mother's pain, the less sleep she'd get. each time she could get an ounce of sleep, her dreams would quickly morph into nightmares of her father's cruelty. night after night, this would go on, and by the time she'd gotten to high school, she could go four whole days without sleep. her peers would often tease her by calling her 'raccoon eyes' because of how dark the bags under her eyes had gotten, but she couldn't have cared less. she was too tired to care. all she wanted was to sleep but she knew that it was a far fetched desire.

	the day of her graduation, she ran away with her mother. they sneaked away while her father was passed out on the floor of their living room and took a flight straight to south korea. they left everything behind, save for the most essential things stuffed into two small bags. together, they worked hard to start their lives over once again, without her asshole of a father. though he wasn't there, his presence was still very obvious in the scars both yuki and her mother shared. he would appear in yuki's nightmares more often than she'd like - just another reason to lose sleep.

	yukioka is a very quiet, mellow girl who enjoys keeping to herself most of the time. she usually appears to be emotionless and has probably contributed quite a bit to her inability to make new friends as her lack of expression has caused many to be incredibly intimidated by her. this doesn't bother her at all, really, not when the one thing she truly wants is peace and quiet. it's a little hard to attain such things when people are always buzzing around you, trying to make small talk. she would've enjoyed the company once upon a time, but not now. even the slightest bit of noise can lead to a splitting headache nowadays. she's extremely straightforward and won't hesitate to give you the straight truth. the only thing she can't be honest about, however, is how envious she is of people who can smile so brightly as if they can just easily ignore the rest of the world. she's cold and reserved, but most importantly: she's tired. she's tired of the nightmares that keep her from sleeping at night; tired of blaming herself for not helping her mother any sooner; tired of people looking at her with pity when they see the dark circles under her unfeeling eyes. she's tired and it couldn't be more evident. she just wishes it would all stop so she could finally get some sleep.
