  1. Dear Sir/Madam
  2.
  3. I am writing to apply for the Product Design Internship at Tjep, Amsterdam. Please find attached my resume and portfolio, showing my skills and experiences for your consideration.
  4.
  5. I have recently finished the second year of my degree - BSc (Hons) Product Design at Nottingham Trent University, achieving a 2:1 standard of study for two consecutive years. I am now searching for another design internship to finish my placement year and further my work experience in the industry.
  6.
  7. As I write to you, I am currently still working at UNStudio, Amsterdam as a product design intern, having contributed to a variety of furniture and product design projects over the past 6 months. A range of design skills were used to develop project concepts such as sketching, CAD modelling compound geometries, preparing models for 3D printing, hands-on modelling and compiling presentations for client visits and internal meetings with Adobe InDesign. The first month of my internship was based in their materials research knowledge platform, which prepared me for the dedicated attention to detail required into materials and design research before and throughout every design project.
  8.
  9. The role has required me to adapt my university taught parametric SolidWorks workflow to Rhino, utilising both its primary NURBS modeler and also its T-Splines plug-in to rapidly realise more complex doubly-curved organic forms, as evident in the design language of all UNStudio projects. An example of some of the clients that I’ve worked for thus far include: Alessi, Walter Knoll, Wilde & Spieth, Prooff, Olivari and Artifort.
  10.
  11. I am also familiar with the computational design process and Grasshopper for Rhino, used in a huge range of UNStudio projects but also in particular on the EYE_BEACON Pavilion, the ticket booth for the Amsterdam Light Festival. I briefly aided with the on-site construction and ensuring it was ready for the night time photo-shoot. The theme drew inspiration from the elusive behavior and bioluminescent properties of deep sea marine organisms.
  12.
  13. Maintaining a consistent design language by drawing from UNStudio’s architectural legacy was essential to ensure that client expectations were met as well as ensuring that the product design portfolio matched the brand identity of the firm.
  14.
  15. A show of my teamwork skills was evident in the McGee Cycle Safety Design Challenge (an industry project), where I demonstrated my ability to lead the project and also work collaboratively in a design engineering team. My role and responsibilities in the group was vital in achieving the ‘Highly Commended’ award and a cash prize in recognition for designing the ‘Mc-V’, an electronic cyclist detection and alert system in the aim of preventing further HGV (lorry) related cyclist fatalities on the hectic streets of central London.
  16.
  17. I trust that on consideration of my skills, attributes and achievements you will feel that I will be a valuable addition to the team. Ideally the internship duration should be 3-5 months, but I’m up for discussion on this. I wish to start as soon as possible after my current internship ends, in mid-March. Please feel free to get in touch should you require any further information from me, my tel is +31 645 727 810 and email is jfuthc@gmail.com.
  18. I look forward to hearing from you.
  19.
  20.
  21. Yours faithfully,
  22.
  23. Jason Fu
